Mercury in Retrograde

Dealing with the downs of the fickle planet

a blog for paranormal fun

Mercury in retrograde? WTH?

I don’t know who planned this. (Okay, no one plans this, but we all have to deal with it.) I never think about Mercury being in retrograde, unless things are tanking all around me. And that’s what has happened this spring. I think I’m on track, and then things fall apart. And I think it’s just normal stuff, but then more things fall apart and someone says, “Hey, Mercury is in retrograde.” And I realize, wow, it really is!

People are crazy right now!

It’s true. During this time Murphy’s Law is in control. “If it can go wrong, it will go wrong.” Like recieving the edits for Wolf Enforcer while trying to catch up on Pack Enforcer, and while prepping for vacation. After being sick for two weeks.

Oh, and I find out someone planned the pre-order for the Alphas of Summer during the same time. REALLY? Does everything have to happen all at once?

Yes. It does. Why?

Because Mercury is in retrograde!

What does that really mean? Well apparently the planet is moving backwards, so it screws with the entire psychic well-being of our planet. Want more detail? Here’s a super cool article that explains it much better than I can.

http://www.astrologyhoroscopereadings.com/2017-mercury-retrograde-calendar.html

And want to know something super cool?

So, I do try to plan for Mercury’s wild shennangans, if I happen to think about it. And if my schedule stays the same. But that never happens. And there are some things you just can’t control. Like everyone else planning for you. Yikes!

But if you are a year long planner, like me, you can check out Mercury’s schedule and add it to your schedule. Then you can leave that month and a half for other things. Like lying in the sun. Or, taking lots of baths. Or, playing with the dog.

Sure, because we are all able to take an entire month and a half off because of a planet. Really???

But seriously.

Don’t plan big things (like book releases) during that time. If you can avoid it. If you can’t? Plan for things to go wrong. Double check, and triple check, all the little details. And then relax. You can’t control anything anyway so you might as well grab a glass of wine and let it all go. That’s what I’ll be doing. After I frantically try to clean up the retrograde mess.

Want to find out how your astrological sign is affected by Mercury in retrograde? There is a list of all the sign at the bottom of that Mercury article, so click this link, then scroll down and find your sign. Have fun!

Queen of Thorns Cover Reveal

Thursdays Bite

a fantasy romance blog

It’s here! Book Five in my fantasy romance series, Tales of the Black Court, finally has a cover. SQUEE! And isn’t it hot! My fabulous cover artist, Viola Estrella of Estrella Cover Designs has done it again. I love the way she’s stayed with the essence of the entire series, and yet this cover is something new and different. It totally says ‘fantasy romance’ to me. And I’m especially thrilled because this book is the last one in this series arc, so it’s great to end this story line about the evil Black Queen on such a super high note. I hope you love it as much as I do.

Presenting:

Queen of Thorns: A Fantasy Romance of the Black Court. Book Five, Tales of the Black Court.

QueenOfThorns-600x900

When Thorn discovers her greatest secret will the man she’s fallen in love with turn on her? Or will he give up his life to protect her?

Ardan is on a quest: return to Prince Kian’s court with the head of the Black Queen—or lose everything. Including his life. But finding the elusive faery queen is proving difficult. And time is running out.

When Aeval wakes up the only thing she remembers is her name. But soon she realizes that even a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. So she becomes Thorn instead, setting off with the man who accidentally kisses her awake on a quest to find and kill the Black Queen.

As Ardan and Thorn travel through the magical lands of Underhill and learn to trust each other, it becomes more and more obvious to Thorn that she and the queen might share more than just a name.

When Ardan finds out that Thorn might be the queen he’s sworn to slay, will he kill the woman he’s starting to fall in love with? Or will Thorn take up the mantle of dark power and again become the Queen of the Black Court?

Dare to enter Jessica Aspen’s world of steamy, fantasy romance in her twisted fairy tale series: Tales of the Black Court

Sensational Saturday

a blog for celebrating!

Woot! We did it!

Thanks to everyone for all your support and nominations on Kindle Scout for WOLF ENFORCER, book one in the Wolf Enforcer series. Because of all your efforts the amazing people at Kindle Press have chosen to publish it and it will be coming out very soon.

Yay! Happy Dancing!

heart thank you

Here’s what I know:

In the next 30 days all the prep work on my end needs to be completed. Then a publishing date will be set. From what I know about Kindle Press, they like to move fast! And since this book is already edited, has a fabulous cover, and is ready to go, I’m assuming we’ll see publication this spring. But that’s totally an assumption on my part, so stay tuned and I’ll let you know when and what’s going on both here on the blog and in my newsletter.

Speaking of my newsletter. If you haven’t signed up yet for the newsletter, and you want a taste of the Wolf Enforcer Series, then you’ll love the FREE book, ROGUE ENFORCER, that you get in your very first official email. 🙂 Click HERE to sign up.

Now, on to the rest of the series plan.

I’m still working on release dates, but book 2 BLOOD ENFORCER, is in final edits and will be coming out hot on the heels of WOLF ENFORCER. And I’m also writing PACK ENFORCER, the third book. So, this series will be done and out, BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

And, as if that weren’t enough, I am also going to be in a super exciting boxed set, THE ALPHAS OF SUMMER, and I’ve written a super special novella set in the Wolf Enforcer series called LONE ENFORCER.

That boxed set comes out in July, and I’ll be letting newsletter people know, as well as here on the blog, and on Facebook.

OH Yeah! Facebook…

I started a group just for the Kindle Scout adventure https://www.facebook.com/groups/WolfEnforcer/ and it’s still live and hopping. I plan to be on there most days and we’ve been sharing fun wolf pictures and other super cool things. I’m going to keep that group open for the rest of the books, so if you haven’t been by yet, come on in and say ‘hi!’

Okay, now I’ve got to get back to work. I now have a ton on my plate, which makes me super happy. I love having plans. 🙂

To summarize:

  1. If you haven’t yet, join the newsletter and get your FREE copy of Rogue Enforcer. http://eepurl.com/zs4Sj
  2. If you want more info on a daily basis, join the Wolf Enforcer Launch Facebook group and check out the fun wolf pics. https://www.facebook.com/groups/WolfEnforcer/
  3. I’ll be updating on the schedule, but for now it’s. TBD and here’s the order of events: Kindle Publishing will set the date for WOLF ENFORCER, and then I’ll set the dates for BLOOD ENFORCER and PACK ENFORCER.
  4. And look out for the fabulous boxed set ALPHAS OF SUMMER that comes out July 3rd.

That’s all folks!

Once again, thank you!

-Jessica

Sneak Peek into Wolf Enforcer

Fantastic Fridays

a blog for alpha shifter romance

Happy day! Wolf Enforcer is in Kindle Scout and has been on the Hot & Trending List for 180 hours!

The first book in my new alpha wolf shifter romance WOLF ENFORCER is entered in the Kindle Scout contest and I’m super excited at all the support it’s getting. I’m not sure there are enough exclamation points for all my excitement, so if you see a few too many, please excuse my joy!

Kindle Scout is a 30 day competition and it’s pretty cool for both writers and readers. Readers vote on which book they want to see published, and if the book ‘wins’ everyone who voted for it gets a free book! (See, more exclamation points, LOL) If you want to read all the details of Kindle Scout, click HERE.

If you haven’t voted yet for WOLF ENFORCER, there’s still time. Click HERE and nominate it. If it wins, and you’ve left it in your nomination queue (you only get three at a time) then Amazon will send you a free Kindle copy of the book. Easy peasy!

WOLF ENFORCER

Gabe caught the woman’s scent from across the meadow. Light vanilla with a hint of feminine musk and it turned his head in an instant. Her skin had a light sweat that made her glow, almost as much as the heat in her eyes when she looked at him. His temperature rose to boiling.

He’d had a terrible day. He’d fought with his twin Sam over who should be handling what responsibilities at the restaurant they were now both responsible for. His recently widowed mother had lectured him about getting along with his brother. And then he’d come up here to run off the tension and had a run-in with Chief Howler, telling him they were shorthanded and he needed to put in more hours on his part-time enforcer job.

Shifting to wolf and taking the mountain at a breakneck pace had taken the steam out of his anger. It had left him tired and relaxed, and more than just a little hazy from the run.

The woman drew closer, each step breaking and releasing the smell of sun-warmed grass. “Hi,” she said.

“Hi, yourself.”

“I know it’s crazy.” She was tall with long legs and long, straight, black hair gleaming with health. And the way she walked toward him with purpose in her eyes gave him an instant hard-on he did nothing to hide. “I know we haven’t known each other long enough. But I have to know for sure.” She reached out a hand and touched him, setting all the little hairs on his forearm at alert. “Kiss me.”

It was totally crazy. Like some mind-blowing dream. A too-hot afternoon, a tall woman with long hair moving gently in the breeze. Her black eyes were full of secrets, and promises, and a hunger he couldn’t resist.

He lightly touched her arm with just the tips of his fingers. As tall as she was, she still had to lift her face to his. He closed the gap, afraid she’d disappear into the warm haze of the afternoon.

His kiss was tentative, just a brushing of his lips on her softer ones, but her reaction was not. She kissed back, increasing the pressure, and his world spun off of its foundation. She wrapped her arms around him and pulled him in close, his erection pushing in between them. It was unbelievable, she was unbelievable. But the spark between them was hot and real and he wrapped his arms around her and pulled her in tighter, trying to get every bit of need he had into the kiss.

They broke apart and she laughed, the sound belling out over the empty meadow. “That’s what I thought.”

“What?”

She shook her head, her long hair rippling with the movement. “How popular is this trail?” The gleam in her eyes had his cock twitching.

He swallowed. “Not that popular. It’s a work day. Everyone’s busy.”

“Good.” She pulled her t-shirt off over her head and then reached back and undid her bra. “I want you here. Now.”

Her breasts were round and firm, her nipples taut, hard peaks in the center. His mouth watered. She was perfect, a goddess offering herself to him on the platter of the hot, sunny meadow. This had to be the most insane day of his life, but he was taking the chance.

The Slow Burn

Moonday Mania

a blog for struggling romance writers everywhere

Launched book 12 today (book 4 in my fantasy series, The Winter Queen’s Dragon). Romance, and in particular fantasy romance, is competitive so this time I tried to do all the launch strategies I could. I so want this one to jump on day one! To be number one on that fantasy romance list. Wouldn’t that be amazing? But, I’ve designed a slow burn launch by sending my announcement to my newsletter list in three batches, and doing social media on another day. So that day one jump is not likely to happen.

The idea is to show Amazon I have consistent sales, instead of a huge bump on day one. But as I look at my  trickle of sales this morning and my finger-grapping hold on the fantasy romance AZ list, I have to keep reminding myself—this is a long tail business. So it’s back to the grindstone. The good news is my early readers seem to love it. And maybe, that’s the one thing to focus on instead of sales: pleasing the readers. If I focus on that, instead of sales and launch days, then everything is a success.

I’m reading Derek Sivers book ANYTHING YOU WANT: 40 Lessons for a New Kind of Entrepreneur . It’s this tiny book filled with lessons he learned launching CD Baby, a small business he started just to sell his own CD’s and ended up selling for millions. One of the things I love about this book is that he’s so not focused on making his business a million dollar business. Instead he’s focused on how to serve his customers, who, when he started, were mostly his friends.

What is your measure of success? Are you in control of it? Is it in control of you?

Okay, that’s not a direct quote from the book, but it could have been. What it is is my take on his book. If I look at my sales and try to go for the money, I’m a total failure. It’s true. I love my books, but they barely break even. It leaves me feeling like I’m clawing and scratching just to make a living writing romance. And it feels desperate.

But, if I focus on some of the things I’ve actually achieved, I’m a success.

My readers love my books. They really do! I get letters asking me when the next fantasy romance in the Tales of the Black Court is coming out. They don’t want to wait! And my free shifter book for my newsletter subscribers, Rogue Enforcer? That inspires letters too. People want more from me. More romance. More shifters. More fantasy.

I’m getting better as a writer. This is super important. It took me two years of edits and massaging to get my first fantasy romance, The Dark Huntsman, to where it is today, but The Winter Queen’s Dragon only took months. And my editor said it was the best one yet! That’s amazing. My reviews for all my romances are at least averaging 4 stars, and usually average higher. Romance readers love my books! WOOT!

I love my life. I am making money doing something I love. Not many people can say that. Am I still struggling to get up that cliff? Yes. Do I want my job to make enough money to say it’s a living? Yes. And I’m getting there. I’ve doubled my income every year. That sounds amazing, right?

(Typically I follow that statement up with some disclaimer about what my income was the first year, but I think I need to just stick with the amazing part. I’ve only been publishing for a few years and while some others are rocking their way up the charts, most small businesses take five years to really get going. My small business is no different.)

Okay, so I’m no CD Baby. I can’t say I’m one of those romance authors who seem to appear out of nowhere and jump to the top. But I can say:

My readers love my books.

I’m getting better as a writer.

I love my life.

All of those are fabulous measures of success. And so what if the money is slow? That’s okay. I’m doubling my income every year, right? 😉

So I’ll get there. One book at a time.
