In all the best fairytales, bear shifters mate for life. Right?

Silver Rose thought having her credit wiped out by her ex-boyfriend was the worst thing that would happen to her—then her grandpa died. Now, she isn’t sure which is worse—living with her sister for three months and gaining an inheritance—or having her independence and losing it all. But someone doesn’t want the girls to succeed in living on Beresford Mountain and is leaving nasty surprises, each one more horrible than the last. And as Silver discovers—bankruptcy and getting close to her sister aren’t the only dangers in the woods.

Abe Beresford, bear shifter, has seen the worst side of the mating bond and he never wants to be that attached to anyone. Ever. When he has a one night stand with Silver, he’s confident there’s no risk of falling in love—or even worse, mating for life. When he starts to feel more than just lust for the lovely Silver, he backs off, hurting Silver’s feelings but protecting his heart.

But Abe can’t resist either Silver or the urge to claim his mate—even if she’s human and hasn’t a clue about bear shifters. And when Silver runs into trouble on the mountain can Abe avoid the mating bond and still save her from a rabid attacker? Or is he doomed to succeed at rescuing her only to watch her walk away?

Lions and wolves and bears, oh my…

SILVER: A Sexy Shapeshifter Fairytale Romance

Silver: A Sexy Shifer Fairytale Romance by Jessica Aspen

The outside door of the bar opened and the last of the daylight flooded in. She blinked back spots and checked out the newcomer. Tall, dark and delicious. Mmm, yes, definitely someone she could lap up with a spoon.

Whoa, she pulled herself back. That had to be the alcohol thrumming in her system. Yes he was gorgeous. He was tall in a bar full of unusually-tall people. Was everyone in this town related? Even most of the women looked bigger than normal—stronger. She’d noticed that when she’d first walked in. But this guy was sexy dangerous to boot, with blacker than black hair and just a bristle of beard. His eyes met hers and they flashed interest. She warmed inside, blamed the vodka, and quick looked away.

She’d come here looking for trouble in her swishy short dress and her high laced-up heels that showed off the expert nail treatment her friend Traci had done for free last week. Last week, when she’d finally given up on being able to afford her own rent and taken up residency on Traci’s couch.

Had it really only been three weeks since she’d woken up one morning and realized Bill was gone, and he’d taken not just everything worth anything in the apartment, but her credit rating and all her money too?

She really needed that third drink.

“Here, miss, that gentleman over there just bought you this.” The new bartender handed Silver another vodka and cranberry and nodded at the other end of the bar.

She blinked blearily at the guy down the bar. Bleh. Too much hair on his neck and ears and not enough in the fringe he had combed over the top. And there was something about the way he was looking at her. She gave a quick shiver.

“No thanks.” She tried to push the glass back but it was too late—it was a busy Friday night and the bartender had moved on. Hairy neck guy smiled at her and she frowned, giving her frostiest go-away look. But just looking at him must have been enough because he got up off of his stool, drink in hand and a loopy smile on his face, and headed for her.

Fabulous, just what she needed.

She got up too fast and had to hold still, letting the room rise up to meet her. She should not be this drunk. Two drinks, right? Either Nita was heavy handed or they’d both miscounted.

Hairy guy wedged himself between her stool and the off-duty waitresses partying it up next to her. “Hi.” He breathed fumes down her shirt.

Silver choked on his exhaled whiskey and looked frantically around for a solution. The bar was packed with people chatting it up and laughing, but of course she knew no one here in Smittsville. After all, she’d only been here twenty-four hours and was only here for the reading of the will.

Or at least that had been the plan. Now everything she’d thought she was going to be doing for the next three months might be put on hold, that is, if she decided to do what Grandpa wanted her to do and move into his ancient cabin with her sister.

Scarlett.

Her very own overbearing, thinks she knows best, ruin my life sister. The sister she’d thought she’d hated until she’d seen her coming in to the lawyers office with that hopeful look on her face. At the thought of the disaster her emotions were concerning her sister she nearly reached for the drink and swallowed it down.

“So, you want to go out and see my truck? I got a Hemi in it.” Hairy Ear’s words were damp.

Silver wiped the spray off her cheek. “Um…”

Damn. Coming here hadn’t been her best idea, but dealing with Scarlett after everything else that had happened this month with Bill had really rattled her, and she’d wanted to blow off some steam. In this tiny town there were only two places to get a drink and she’d caught sight of Scarlett entering the Growler with a guy. So that had left her here at the Chug ‘N Whiskey, a hole in the wall if there ever was one.

Her nemesis draped an arm around her shoulders. “I’m Ned,” he breathed into her face.

She waved a hand in front of her watering eyes and pushed his arm off. “I’m sorry.” Stepping back, she ran smack into her own barstool. “There must be some mistake. I don’t know you.”

“I just bought you a drink.” His smile faded and his face turned hard. Silver tried to move around the barstool, but his arm shot out, blocking her path. “You owe me a kiss.”

“No, I don’t.” She jerked her head away but her reflexes were too slow. Wide wet lips hit her on the cheek, smearing whiskey-laced slobber down her skin. “Eww! Get away.” She pushed on his chest, but it was like trying to shift a boulder. He wasn’t moving. And worse than, his grubby paw landed on her thigh, inching up her short skirt and heading fast for her ass.

Why oh why had she decided to be a rebel and not wear panties?

From out of nowhere black-haired hotty stepped up. “Ned, the lady doesn’t want your attention.” She craned her neck to look up at him. At five foot eight she’d always felt like a giraffe, and with her heels on tonight she was close to six feet, but he towered over her by a good five or six inches. Despite the dire situation she felt a warm glow of gratitude to him for making her feel almost petite.

“Back off Abe. I bought her a drink. Ned moved in closer. “She owes me a kiss.”

Silver wasn’t sure if it was his huge silver belt buckle or something else pressing against her belly. She scooted behind her rescuer. “I didn’t drink it. Look, it’s still there.” She pointed at the full glass still sitting on the bar, brim-full of jewel bright cranberry on ice.

“She doesn’t want your drink, Ned. Why don’t you go back to your end of the bar and sit down before someone steals your seat.”

“She owes me a kiss—a real kiss with tongue.” Ned moved faster than she thought a man of his size could, ducking around Abe and heading for Silver. She stumbled back, grabbing for balance, but her rescuer was quicker. She didn’t see his hand come up but before she could blink he had Ned’s shoulder locked in place and was walking him out of the bar to raucous cheers and cat-calls.

Silver reached for her purse on the bar and rummaged for her phone. She couldn’t afford cab fare, but she was way too drunk to drive all the way to the outskirts of town where her no-tell motel was located.

“Leaving so fast?” Her rescuer had come back into the bar. “How about one more drink? I know you didn’t want Ned’s offering, but it’s good alcohol and it’ll just go to waste if you don’t drink it.”

He moved in close and the warmth of his presence spread through her. Not only was this man super tall, and super good looking, but she could feel the rush of him all over her skin.

She hesitated. “Well, it is just sitting there.”

He waved down the bartender and ordered a beer. “Now, what’s your name, pretty lady?”

The line was cheesy, and she knew she was more than tipsy, but the way he smiled at her had her tingling from the top of her head to the tips of her toes peeping out of her black strappy heels.

“I’m Silver.” She held out her hand. This was so not her, picking up men in bars. She’d always taken her time. Been cautious. Made sure they were safe. But the old her had terrible taste in men, first the notorious Steven Schmidt, and then the even worse rebound man, Bill. What was there to lose by embracing her fresh start and go with her gut?

His broad hand nearly swallowed hers up. “Silver—Silver Rose?” His brows lifted.

“Yes.” She frowned up at him. “Do I know you?”

He grinned, the sudden pirate smile lighting up the depths of his black eyes. “Abe Beresford. We played together up on the mountain as children.”

She took a second look, trying to find the boy in the man. “Wow, you have grown up.”

“So have you.” He looked her up and down, and unlike Ned’s attention, his had her already flushed cheeks burning.

It was still early and she had nowhere to go but back to a lonely hotel room. Why not have some fun with one of the best looking men she’d seen in a long time? A small quiver of caution raised its head, Scarlett would disapprove.

She squashed the feeling. Scarlett, with her bossy ways had been out of her life for over a year. Just because Grandpa’s will said they had to live together for three months to inherit didn’t mean Scarlett would be in charge. This was Silver’s second chance. Why not start by proving to her sister, and to herself, that she could make her own decisions? That she could be the naughty one and didn’t always have to be protected.

The bartender brought his beer.

“Put that on my tab.” Silver smiled up at Abe and he smiled back. “I owe you for fending off Ned.”

“You don’t owe me a thing. But if it will make you feel better, you can pay for it—as long as you let me get the next one.”

Screw it. She’d had a rough day and she could always call that cab later. Besides, this was Abe Beresford. She’d run all over the mountain with him when they were children. Why not do some adult exploration, now that they were grown up? “Sounds like a plan. Let’s find a table.” She winked at him.

He winked back, a long slow movement of thick, black eyelashes showcasing the gleam in his devil-may-care eyes. “Shall we?” He held out an elbow and she linked her arm in his.

A deep shiver ran through her as they made their way to a shadowy table for two. This was going to be some night.

Musing on Writing

Moonday Mania

a blog about writing

A little business before I get down to the blog business:

If you are a member of my newsletter and see the hot new cover for Rogue Enforcer, my elusive paranormal suspense shifter romance for new subscribers, don’t fret. I’ll be sending it out to current subscribers on April 1st. Due to the logistics of launching Scarlett I had to wait, but I didn’t forget you!

Scarlett: A Sexy Shifter Fairytale Romance by Jessica AspenAnd speaking of Scarlett, if you haven’t had a chance to buy your copy yet, there’s still time! You can find all the buy links HERE as well as the description. I was able to make this one available on all the channels so you can buy it today on: Ibooks Barnes & Noble Kobo and Amazon.

 WOOT!

Okay, now that that’s done, on to the blog!

Writing is a funny thing for me. I have this love hate relationship with each and every stage. Whichever one I have to start, that’s the one I’m reluctant to move into. For instance. I’m finally done with the edits etc for all the Sexy Shifter Fairytale Romances. Phew! That took forever! Not just because the project was way bigger than I thought it was going to be, but also because my body pooped out on me. Yeah, that’s right. I’m not Super  Woman. Not even Wonder Woman. Major bummer, I know.

But, they’re finally finished and I’m working on Book Four in the Tales of the Black Court. Now I started fiddling with the plot for this book way back in January between edits and other nit picky jobs I had to do, but I really haven’t started the writing yet. I’m ready to start. Really I am.

But…there’s so many other things I could be doing. Right?

Wrong!

I need to be writing. I’m ready to be writing. The plot is there, the characters are there, and I’m super excited to get to the whole thing. I’m really super excited to be finished. But what I’m not super excited to be doing is actually writing the damn romance!

I love the writing. I hate the writing. But what’s really tough is moving into starting the writing. Or the edits. Or the production. Each stage has me dragging my feet, until I’m in it. And then the romance starts for me. After I’m in the grove and the story is forming all those twisty tendrils of plot intertwining together, after the words start coming 500… 1,000…3,000 at a time. After I finally figure out what motivates my alpha heroes and what is going to make my heroine ticked off. Then I love the writing.

And then it ends.

And then I have to fight myself to start the next stage. Tearing it all apart and editing it. Grr. Why does the writing have to start? Why does it ever have to end?

So now you know. I’m officially insane. But I think all authors are. We get so immersed in our worlds, we don’t want to set foot there. And then we’re there, and we never want to leave. I’m the same way about getting into the ocean. No, don’t make me get in. NO! Don’t make me leave!

I’d love to hear what your favorite books of mine are. I’m at a crossroads and trying to decide what comes after Six Sexy Shifter Fairytale Romances, and Five Tales of the Black Court. Should I keep one series going? Should I start something else? I’m looking forward at that ocean and I’m not sure if I’m ready to dip a toe in, so help me out. Please?

Scarlett Released!

Scarlett: A Sexy Shifter Fairytale Romance by Jessica Aspen

Trapped in an isolated cabin with trouble on the way, how is Scarlett to know that the man who could be her prince is actually a bear shifter in disguise.

Scarlett Rose screwed up—she used show and tell to prove to her sister that her boyfriend was a jerk. A year later and Silver is still pissed, but Scarlett is given a gift from the grave—their grandfather has left a will that forces the two of them to live together in his cabin deep in the heart of the Colorado Rockies. Now Scarlett has the chance to make her sister see that she’ll do anything—even change her wild ways for good—all for the chance to earn Silver’s forgiveness.

But the Rose girls don’t know that the mountain they grew up visiting every summer has been the home to bear shifters for years—and now the bears want the land back. All the land.

Rose sisters…or no Rose sisters.

Cam Beresford has spent his life being the town drunk’s son. Even now, when he and his brothers are finally successful game designers, the town’s old guard still sees them as unpredictable wild cards. But when the last non-shifter owner on Beresford Mountain dies, Cam knows this is his chance to buy back the property and show the town that the Beresford boys are not their father’s sons.

But, Scarlett isn’t as anxious to sell the property as Cam thought a city girl would be. And with someone on the mountain leaving nasty presents for the Rose girls, Cam’s inner bear is roused to protect, even if Scarlett is merely human.

With the danger growing increasingly higher and Silver threatening to leave, Scarlett’s time is running out. And when Cam tumbles over the edge of desire into the mating dance, will he be able to pull back? Or will his bear take over and take Scarlett to the edge?

Lions and wolves and bears, oh my!

Writing Intertwined Shifter Romance

Thursdays Bite

a blog for the fantastical everywhere

SCARLETT: A Sexy Shifter Fairytale Romance is almost here! Happy dancing!!!

It’s been way more of a challenge than I thought to write intertwined romance stories, especially about shifters. Way back when I first wrote GOLDI I knew I had to do something with those extra bear brothers, Cam and Abe Beresford. Three bears, but only one romance left me two romances short. But I also knew that I wanted to twist the fairy tale Rose White and Rose Red, a tale about two sisters and a bear shifter prince, so I had my solution.

Of course, in the fairy tale only one sister gets the bear, the other gets his brother, but that worked out perfectly for me: two sisters, two bear shifters, two romances. Bingo! I took me a long time to get to the writing of Cam and Abe’s story and when I finally did I was faced with one fairy tale and two romances. Urg! What to do?

How did I split one fairy tale between two books?

Well, here’s how I solved the issue: I decided that each book would have aspects of the original fairy tale with Scarlett being the main story of the encounters with the dwarf. You see, every fairy tale needs a villain and in Rose White and Rose Red the villain is this mean selfish dwarf who has turned the prince into a bear and wants his treasure. The girls run into him several times and try to help him out of predicaments, but he’s always ungrateful and rude. Finally he pushes the bear too far and the bear kills him.

Perfect! I have my story. But…

But, once again, two books, two girls, two bear shifters and two romances. Solution? Two dwarfs! Although in my book the villains aren’t dwarfs, instead they are just mean, cranky or crazy bear shifters.  What this let me do is twist the same fairy tale two ways. Love it!

I hope you enjoy both Scarlett and Silver’s stories. They were harder to write then I thought they’d be, but I learned a lot about myself as a writer, and bear shifer romance in particular

Leave me a comment and let me know what you think about writing the same story from different points of view? Or your opinion on sexy shifter romance and fairy tales in general. I love to hear from you. 🙂

Cheers!

Writing Cinderella

Moonday Mania

a blog for the fairy tale romance lover

A funny thing happened to me this morning. I got an email from my fabulous crit partner ML Guida and it said, “I just watched Disney’s Cinderella, I think you should write a Cinderella romance.”

LOL!

ML (Mary) is one of my fellow writers in the CHAIN OF LOVE: Curvy Women and the Men Who Chain Their Hearts writing experiment, and even though she didn’t get a chance to read or critique CINDER: A Sexy Shifter Fairytale Romance, she’s been looking at my cover and reading my blurbs and listening to me talk about fairy god mothers and glass slippers for the last three months. So how come she didn’t know it was a Cinderella story?

Good question.

Cinder-logo-1600x2400So, it got me to wondering: what I was missing. The book cover doesn’t scream Cinderella. It does say sexy romance, and it does say wolf shifter romance, but there are no glass slippers, no pumpkins, and no chubby fairy godmother’s with sparkly wands.

Okay, so what about the blurb? Does that say Cinderella?

When curvy Cinderella meets a charming reluctant alpha, can he save her from a step mother who means murder?

Cinder Vandeburg dreams getting away from her overbearing step mother and getting a real job—one that pays. When her stepsisters are finalists in a teen modeling competition at a chic resort in the beautiful mountains of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, her step mother offers her an opportunity: prove herself a competent personal assistant and earn not only a stellar referral, but a bona-fide introduction to the movers and shakers of the modeling world. This is Cinder’s chance at freedom but as usual, her stepmother seems to find fault in everything she does—even when she sends her to seduce suspected modeling judge, Aiden Burdock.

Aiden is no modeling judge. He’s a tour guide with a pack of bachelor wolves depending on him to rustle up quality clients and keep their business afloat. But Aiden never wanted to be an alpha. He dreams of freedom and running wild in the hills. Having six…no seven…now eight wolves depending on him for leadership and jobs is more than he counted on when he fled pack expectations in Colorado. But his alpha tendencies can’t be ignored and when he sees curvy Cinder being treated as the runt of the litter, he lies and says he’s a judge to get her away from her malicious boss.

Now Aiden is faced with how to tell Cinder he’s just a working stiff, like her, and a wolf shifter to boot. As Aiden and Cinder’s fairy godmother build up her self esteem and she starts falling in love with a man of secrets.

Lions and wolves and bears, oh my.

Discover why readers love the twisted tales of Jessica Aspen’s Sexy Shifter Fairytale Romance.

Yes, I think so. Not only does it say she’s a curvy Cinderella, it says there’s an evil stepmother, stepsisters, and a fairy godmother, and while Aiden isn’t exactly portrayed as Prince Charming, I do say “charming reluctant alpha” in the tagline.

So how did she miss it?

Well, I don’t think she did.

I think that she was actually thinking about the TALES OF THE BLACK COURT, because I haven’t done a Cinderella story there. I’ve done Snow White in both series, and I’ve done Beauty and the Beast and The Frog Prince in TALES OF THE BLACK COURT, but I haven’t done Cinderella.

Why not? And why did I wait until book six of the SEXY SHIFTER FAIRYTALE ROMANCES to do Cinderella. Why not do it first?

Because it’s so hard! Or I thought it would be. I tried for a year before I wrote Cinder to figure out Aiden’s story. I’d already written him in Snow, he’s the alpha of Seth’s new bachelor pack, and I knew he needed his own story, but I seriously was going to do a Beauty and the Beast story because Cinderella was just not flowing.

But then I had the opportunity to write the curvy romance, and suddenly, Cinder’s tale was in my head, and writing it was one of the easiest twisted fairy tales I’ve ever written. Leticia Du Monde, her sassy, sexy, plus-size fairy godmother of the modeling world, nearly wrote herself, and Cinder’s stepmother and stepsisters sprang to life without any trouble at all. I just knew how the story would go.

And when that happens, it’s magic.

It’s like the first book in the TALES OF THE BLACK COURT. Writing THE DARK HUNTSMAN wasn’t easy, but that’s because it was my first complete long novel and I needed to learn a lot about writing, but the story? Easy. Same thing with RED. I wrote the first draft in three weeks. Love it!

So, when a Cinderella romance that works in the fantasy romance world of TALES OF THE BLACK COURT comes to mind, I’ll write it. Meanwhile, I’ve had the Snow Queen story percolating for nearly four years in the back of my mind, long before Frozen or the new Snow Queen movie appeared, so that’s what’s coming next. And of course, for those of you who read BROKEN MIRROR, I’ve set up Sleeping Beauty.

In the meantime, Mary, you’ll have to stick with sexy wolf shifters and Cinderella romance. I loved writing it and I think it’s my favorite to date. I hope it’s yours too. At least until the next book comes out!

Meanwhile you can still pre-order Cinder and all of the Chain of Love books for 99 cents each on Amazon. Click HERE for a list of books and links.

Do you want a Cinderella tale for the TALES OF THE BLACK COURT? What about some of the other fairy tales I’ve not written at all, like Rapunzel? Now that’s a fairytale with some deep ideas in it. Would you like Repunzel? What other fairytales do you love?

Early Bird Gets the Worm, But Not Before My Coffee!

Moonday Mania

a blog about writing

Updates:

I’m working hard on my new Sexy Shifter Fairytale Romance for Camp NaNoWriMo as well as working on finishing up polishing RED, the first book in the series (formerly titled LITTLE RED RIDING WOLF). I’m also working on cover sheets to send to my cover artist for the first four books in the series and I’m looking forward to reissuing the first three books in this romance novella series in the fall. Followed fast by the next three novellas.

I’m also working on getting my first three fantasy romances in the TALES OF THE BLACK COURT into a boxed set. I have the cover and it’s fantastic! (Cover reveal to come soon) But the formatting is driving me crazy, I may have to farm that out, but my budget says “Noooo!”

Now onto the blog:

I used to think I was a morning person, and then I read about all the authors who rise and shine at five in the morning and start creating their books. Crazy! These people actually get up an hour early to cram in writing BEFORE they do things like: go to the day job. Can I say CRAZY again?

So, am I a morning person?

Me at five am

Not a pretty sight at 5am

I rise and shine somewhere between 5am and 6am, without an alarm. Unless I’m super tired, then I’ve been known to sleep in until 7. Most people would define that as a morning person. But I’ll give you a hint. I have serious bed-head when I roll out of bed and I desperately need my coffee. In other words, no one wants me writing sexy shifter romance when all I can think about is coffee. You can picture the dialogue.

“Oh baby, I can’t stop thinking about you.”

“That’s nice. Is that coffee I smell?”

“Forget the coffee, let’s make mad passionate love.”

“Um, sure. After the coffee. And breakfast. I’m too hungry to think about anything but bacon. And coffee. Is the coffee ready yet?”

I can do emails, and once I wake up I can edit, but actual creative work, where I think about plot and motivation and backstory? It just doesn’t happen that early.

If it’s not 5am then what is my most productive time?

I think my most productive time is after I’ve been up, had my coffee, taken the dog for a walk, showered and dressed. And that puts me at 9am. Right when I’m supposed to be at the day job. When I do get to work at 9, I’m great. Words flow, things get done. I’m a powerhouse until noon and my lunch break. But that doesn’t really work with my day job who expects me to be at work from 9 until noon. Sometimes even 1pm, or 2.

I get home after work wanting lunch and a break. I have time then, it’s just not my natural work time. It’s the afternoons when my body wants to catch up for that five am wake up call. And sometimes…I fall asleep in front of the tv when I should be writing. Then the kids come home and I’m distracted by life, errands, and cooking dinner. So when am I supposed to squeeze those quality words in?

Find your time.

It doesn’t matter about all the excuses. I want to write, so I need to find some other productive time. I’m lucky in that I’m working part time now. The idea behind that was supposed to be that the other hours in the week I would be writing. But it’s only working out that Fridays are a writing day, because I usually don’t work then and I push everything else to other days of the week. TGIF!

What am I going to do about it?

I honestly don’t know. I have a few ideas though.

First of all I’m going to be working less hours for the rest of the summer, so I think I can devote Wednesdays as well as Fridays to writing.

Second of all, I’m leaving the house to do it. Summer is when my kids are home a lot, so if the house is full, I’m outa here!

And third, I’m going to try writing at least a hundred words in the afternoons that I am able. Thursdays and Mondays tend to be packed, but there is a possibility that Tuesdays will work out. And if I get into that habit, maybe I can also squeeze in another hundred on the tougher days.

When are your most productive hours? Have you ever tried to chart them? What did you find out?

Camp NaNoWrimo 2015, in July!

Moonday Mania

a blog for writing

It’s Nano time again!

Camp-Participant-2015-Twitter-ProfileHello all you writers and readers out there. It’s NaNoWrimo time again, and this time we’re heading to camp! I tried to do this in April at the last Camp Nano, but I had a vacation at the end, so I missed my goal. The good news is I did write 8k+ on my latest Sexy Shifter Fairytale Romance, SCARLETT, so I’m thrilled with that.

The bad news is I only hit 8k+ on my latest Sexy Shifter Fairytale Romance, so I’m a little bummed.

I will be finishing SCARLETT in July for the second round of camp. I’ve worked a tiny bit on it in the last month or so, but mostly I’ve been busy getting my fantasy romance series in line for my release of BROKEN MIRROR. I’ve also been working on the edits for RED, the first Sexy Shifter Fairytale Romance.

So what makes Nano work for you?

Okay, I had to think about this. The time I was most successful at Nano I wrote GOLDI, then titled GOLDI AND THE BEAR. It wasn’t the 50k that Nano usually goals, but I hit close to 30k, and that’s my biggest writing month ever! So what worked then? And how can I put those lessons into use this time?

I left the house.

I’ve found that working at home works for me, but only if everyone is out of the house. When I wrote Goldi I was most successful at the coffee shop, because no one bothered me there. A key component of that is that I went to the coffee shop solo. I didn’t go to a Nano write in. I didn’t arrange to meet friends. I also work well at the library, but it’s a little further away.

I had an outline

I had a very solid outline for GOLDI. That meant that I knew what I was going to write that day, and even if I skipped a scene that was causing me issues, I knew where my next step was.

I stayed on track

I have a big issue. I let everyone and everything else in my life derail me from writing. That month I stayed focused and wrote. Saying no is one of the hardest things for me, especially to my family. But I need to get this story finished. Not just because I have two more to write in this series, but also because I want to move on to the next TALES OF THE BLACK COURT, and HAUNTED HOLIDAYS.

Yes, I have too many projects that I want to do. But they are all doable, if I focus, focus, focus.

Can I do it? Yes I can!

Staying positive is a key piece of being successful at NaNoWrimo. I have a very doable goal this time. I want to write 20k to add to the 8k I already have written for SCARLETT. 30 days, 20k. And I usually only am able to write about five days a week. That works out to 22 writing days for me. (I only write on the weekdays because the family obligations take up the weekends). That’s about 909 words per day.

When I’m on a roll, 1k per hour is an easy thing to do. So that’s only one hour per day. Can I find an hour per weekday to write? Yes I can!

Okay, let’s face it. I don’t usually make Nano. What can I do differently?

Well, I don’t ever make it to 50k. So I believe by setting my Camp Nano goal to 20k, that’s a doable number for me. Sure it’s still a challenge. I have a day job, kids, a husband. And Molly the Labrador needs to be walked every day. I also need to keep up with my exercise routine and to cook healthy food. Oh, and shop for the healthy food. But I’ve set myself up for as much success as possible and I think I can do it this time! I’ve definitely written 20k in a month before.

RED was written in three weeks. GOLDI in four. I wrote SNOW  in about a month too. All of those are 30k books, so I know I can do it. I just have to…stay focused!

What are your goals for July?

Are you doing anything special for the month of July? Are you setting goals? Nanoing? Let me know if you have a particular goal for July, or just for the summer.
