Ghosts of Christmas Past

excerpt: chapter one

Jen turned, gazing over the bare winter fields to the tangle of trees. No explanations, no obligations, no complications. For two whole weeks she could just hide here, and write.

The first genuine smile she could remember since April spread her face wide.

Then the pickup arrived.

Black, large, and full of male attitude it parked right next to her vacation house, dwarfing her small car and taking up the entire drive.

“Oh, there’s Nate now.” Mrs. Castlebury waved at the man pushing an eager black Labrador back into the cab while trying to exit the vehicle.

He got the door shut, faced them, and grinned. Dressed in New England casual of laced-up work boots, jeans, and plaid shirt under a denim jacket, Nate Pierce, striding across the snow, hand out in welcome, was a commercial for settling down. Tall. Good-looking in a rugged, works-for-a-living kind of way. And he had a dog. A big, sloppy, super-cute dog, wagging its tail and drooling on the driver’s side window.

For one impulsive moment Jen wished this was her life. She loved big dogs, the country, and secretly, men in plaid shirts, but she hadn’t had the opportunity for any of it since her dad’s death. Their daddy-daughter fishing trips, where he’d gotten to get out of his suit and she’d gotten to be free of her school uniform, had stopped cold the year she’d turned twelve.

This was the first time since then she’d ventured outside of somewhere hot and warm with a very clean, very controlled hotel. Her mom’s idea of a vacation. Of course, neither her mom nor her ex, Jason, tolerated dogs of any size. And as for living outside of the Boston city limits?

Neither of them would consider the horror.

She squashed the sudden surge of loneliness and desire for something she’d probably never have, and pasted on a smile.

Mr. Good-Looking Country Boy tramped through the snow to the porch, pushed his overlong forelock of sandy brown hair off his face, and held out a hand. “Hi, I’m Nate Pierce, your landlord.”

“My what?” She shot a quick look at Mrs. Castlebury.

“Your landlord, dear. I’m just the listing agent. Nate owns the house and he’ll see to any upkeep you need.”

“In fact, I’ll be back in an hour or so after you’ve gotten settled and bring the Christmas tree.”

“The Christmas tree?” She’d forgotten. She’d purchased the Christmas in New England package because it had been cheaper than renting by the day. “That’s not necessary,” she said, her voice chillier than she’d intended.

“I’ve already cut the tree down.” Nate’s friendly grin wavered as did his hand hovering in the air between them. “It would be a shame to waste.”

She didn’t want to be friendly with the neighbors. She wanted to hide out and recuperate. Make up her mind as to what in the world she was going to do next. But good manners won out.

Jen repressed a sigh, reached out, and slid her bare hand into his. As it disappeared into his tan callused grip, her hand seemed slim and small. He squeezed gently and a tingling warmth spread across her skin.

Hot caramel sensation slid from the connection between them, up her palm, along her arm, and through her entire body. Her hand tightened automatically, and a responding spark lit in his eyes.

Jen swallowed. Shoot! She wasn’t ready for this. She was here to lick her wounds, not some guy’s abs. And given the strength in his hand and his wide shoulders, she’d bet he had some killer abs.

She gazed up into Nate’s warm chocolate brown eyes and his face blurred. For a moment she saw another face superimposed over his. Same brown eyes, same tanned, rugged New England skin, but more boyish, broad-boned and black haired.

Every hair on her scalp tried to climb out of its slicked back, ponytailed restriction.

Then her new neighbor’s sharper, more intense features came into focus. Jen panicked and jerked her hand away. Wiping her buzzing palm on her long red wool coat she backed up, nearly running into Mrs. Castlebury.

“Oh, I’m sorry. Pardon me.” She circled around, putting the older woman between herself and Nate Pierce.

What the hell just happened?

Jen tucked her hands into the safety of her coat pockets, surreptitiously rubbing her tingling right palm along the silk inside her pocket. Trying to get rid of the strange feeling spreading along her skin and telling her pounding heart that everything was fine. That something bizarre hadn’t just happened to her. And that life was safe and normal.

Ghosts of Christmas Past

Jen MacNamara flees the Christmas wedding of her best friend and cheating fiancé and runs to the country to spend the holiday alone. It’s the perfect plan, until her unexpectedly sexy neighbor and landlord, Nate Pierce, insists on bringing the holiday to her—complete with a Christmas tree, hot chocolate, and an unexpected kiss.

And that’s not Jen’s only problem. ghosts of christmas past by jessica aspen

The cozy country farmhouse is already occupied by something evil. Now Jen’s nights are spent wrapped in sensual dreams of a past life, and her days growing closer to Nate as they solve the mystery of the malevolent ghost that haunts not only the house, but also wants Jen dead.

Ghosts of Christmas Past Sneak Peek

Nate Pierce stared at his brothers as they pulled the plug on his dreams.

“We’re done, Nate.” Atticus leaned on the old wooden desk that had been their grandfather’s. With his fingers laced together and stuck with a nose that the Pierce family had carried proudly for generations, he even looked like the old man.

If the old man had had a full head of hair.

Atticus’s fraternal twin Ethan nodded from his position propped up on the wall next to the filing cabinets. “We’re pulling out, bro.” Always active, with too much energy sparking in his blue eyes, Ethan was so wired he couldn’t even sit down to chew Nate out.  “It’s time to sell the houses and pay us back.”

Pressure drummed in Nate’s ears. He stood up fast. “What the hell?” His metal folding chair clattered to the old wooden floor of the second story office, nearly hitting his dog, who scuttled out of the way. “You can’t pull out, there’s still three years on the loan. I’ll be left with nothing.”

Ghosts of Christmas Past Sneak Peek

But it had been so real.

She went back through it. She’d been driving down the narrow road, heading deeper into the tangled bare branches of winter New England. She’d risked a glance at the overcast sky. Only mid-afternoon, but the heavy cloud cover and tall trees pressing in from the sides made it seem like nighttime was approaching fast.

And then, she’d looked back at the road. A woman in a long, dark dress stood dead center in the curve.

Jen screamed and turned the wheel, pushing her right foot down hard on the brake. The tires shrieked, and the car skidded, the end fishtailing around and spinning in a 360 turn.

She hung on. Trees flew by in a blur and she caught a vague impression of a frightened face.

The car slowed its spin. Her heart pounded in her throat, scratching and clawing in a race to get her somewhere, anywhere but strapped into the seat of a car she barely knew how to drive.

No footprints, no body, no woman…nor any sign there’d ever been one.

Her body shaking, Jen got out of the small rental car and looked again. Frigid air caught in her lungs and, for a moment, she suffocated on her own breath.

Then she exhaled. And it was okay. She could breathe again.

A chilly gust of wind blew snow down the empty road. She walked back a few feet and searched the unmarked snow crowded close under the dense brush and trees of the road’s shoulders, but couldn’t find anything. Unable to get warm she pulled her wool coat close around her, checking the steep ditches again, and again, making absolutely sure that there was no body, bleeding and tossed to the side. Or buried in the snow.

There wasn’t. Her expensive leather boots soaking wet, she stumbled back into the car. With numb fingers she turned on the heat, reclined the seat and closed her eyes. Took a moment, just to breathe.

There hadn’t been a woman, wide-eyed, white-skinned, and dripping with mud, standing in the middle of the slick, snow-covered road. It was just her nerves.

It’s here! Ghosts of Christmas Past is released!

Moonday Mania

a blog where we celebrate!

I’m stepping out of my self imposed blog hiatus to whoop it up about releasing my latest book, Ghosts of Christmas Past. (See, I am working and not just having a fun summer holiday.) I’m a little nervous about it because there are no shifters, witches or elves. It’s not a fantasy romance nor is it a twisted fairy tale romance. What it is is something completely different. A contemporary Gothic romance.

And, it’s got a New Adult vibe. So, I really should call it a New Adult Contemporary Gothic Romance.

Oh, I forgot, it’s also a holiday romance. So let’s add that in. A New Adult Contemporary Gothic Christmas Romance. I don’t like to do anything uncomplicated.

It’s shorter than my fantasy books and a little longer than the shifter romances. In fact, it was supposed to be a novella, but it missed the mark and came in at over 40,000 words, so it’s officially a short novel. I toyed with the idea of calling it a novelette but ended up sticking with short novel.

And it’s the first in a series of short novels about the Pierce family in Appleset, Massachusetts. All of these books will be centered around holidays and all of them will have some kind of supernatural element. Maybe the series title will give you a clue as to what kind of supernatural element. Haunted Holidays.

Yep, they will be ghost stories. With all the suspense and horror of a ghost story, tempered by the heat of the romance. Because there is some romance. Okay, more than a little. The heat level in this book is spicy, hotter than my steamy fantasy novels but maybe not quite hitting the heat level of the Twisted Tales: Come Into the Woods shifter romances.

I had a lot of fun writing this one, it was a nice break in between all of my books. I started it in late 2012, after I’d finished Goldi and the Bear and before starting Prince by Blood and Bone. Then it had to sit a while while I wrote Prince by Blood and Bone and published both it and Golid and The Dark Huntsman. Last fall, when I had planned to publish it, I was instaed wrestling with Prince by Blood and Bone’s edits. And this one had to sit by the wayside. But it’s finished now, and it’s something new and different. So I hope you give my venture into the modern Gothic a chance.

To get it off to a good start I’m offering it at 99 cents for the month of August, then I’ll raise it up to it’s regular price of $2.99, so get your copy today!

Tell Me Where You Discover Christmas Paranormal Reads

Thursdays Bite

a holiday blog and a poll for you

I know Thanksgiving is just around the corner for us Americans and I know you may not be ready for the shopping and the decorating, but the holiday season is coming!  Like many of you my fall has been crazy and due to work, family stuff (its all good, just busy),  and wanting to focus on Prince By Blood and Bone  I have shelved my spicy, new adult, xmas paranormal novella. Sigh. But I don’t want to be left out of the paranormal, holiday romance book scene altogether! So today, I decided to share other authors paranormal romance Christmas stories, while I dream of spooky houses, ghosts, and decorating Christmas trees with sugar plums. And I want to know where you find your holiday reading so please fill out the poll at the bottom. Poll closes in a week!

I love Jessa Slade’s Marked Souls series. It’s dark, sexy, and  so convoluted it  appeals to smart readers. Books that make you think and turn you on are first on my list so I’m starting off with Jessa’s Christmas Novella The Darkest Night.

THE DARKEST NIGHT
A Marked Souls Novella
Wishing you a wicked Christmas…
Possessed by an angelic entity, Cyril Fane fought rampant evil and the pain of more private losses with a fiery golden sword…until he was beaten and left for dead by a malevolent force. Now exiled from his divine brethren, he reluctantly joins the Chicago league of talyan—immortal warriors possessed by repentant demons—as his only chance to reclaim his sword and his place in the holy sphericanum.
Bella McGreay, mysterious mistress of the Mortal Coil night club, has also danced around an uneasy affiliation with the talyan. She has secrets of her own to keep, and as the days shorten toward the winter solstice, shadows are deepening all around. Even as she barricades herself against the joys—and terrors—of the Christmas season, she’ll have to decide whether the shadows or her secrets are more dangerous.
Bella and Cyril have good reason to fear evil when an old enemy returns to torment them and the Chicago league. But only together will they find a way to the light after the darkest night.

ice gods by helen scott taylorI just loved this cover. It’s so winter holidayish and sensual, it makes me want to open up this book and read. But the author didn’t add much description, so I’m not very sure what the plot is going to be about. Anything about the Norse gods always intrigues me, not only am I a Thor fan (who isn’t?), but I also love Neil Gaiman’s book, American Gods. I haven’t read this author yet, but given the subject and the cover and the 99cent price tag, I’m willing to give it a shot.

ICE GODS

by Helen Scott Taylor

A trip to Iceland to find her father turns into a nightmare when she is transported to the icy palace of Valhalla and lands in the middle of the Ice Gods family feud. Odin’s son has loved and protected her from afar. Now she is in his world, he can finally make her his.

And last, but not least, ML Guida’s A Vampire’s Christmas Wish. ML is my critique partner and we have very different styles and paranormal directions. And this book is very different from her typical  pirate vampire series that is set in the 1600s. But despite it not being pirates I had fun reading and critiquing this fast paced Christmas suspense novella. Oh, and it still has the vampires!

a vampire's christmas wish by ml guidaA VAMPIRE’S CHRISTMAS WISH

by ML Guida

Master vampire, Janus Morano, has searched for centuries to find his lost soul mate. When he finally discovers his true love on Christmas Eve in Hawaii, she doesn’t know him, doesn’t remember her previous life, and doesn’t want him. Janus must get her to remember him and their love, but nothing comes easy with Deirdre Hahn.
Deirdre is drawn to the mysterious dark stranger, but she came to Hawaii with Brandon Delaney, to heal their broken relationship. Brandon has promised to never beat her again, bending over backwards to be Prince Charming. But the promise is broken.
Deirdre escapes Brandon’s clutches and her only hope is the mysterious dark stranger. Janus vows to help her but soon she discovers his dark secret. He’s a vampire…a vampire searching for her.
Now Deirdre is caught between two desperate men. Not sure who to trust. In order to save her future she must accept her past and when her Hawaiian vacation falls apart and she’s kidnapped, she must learn to trust Janus or die on Christmas.

While we spend most of the holiday season shopping and cooking and planning the big day, take some time for yourself. Pour a glass of wine, unwrap the special box of chocolates, and open a book. And don’t forget to review it afterwards. A lovely review is the best Christmas present an author can receive.

Where do you find your holiday reads? I’d love to know. Do you look on Goodreads? Do you look at what your friends read? Do you Google, or search on Amazon and Barnes and Noble?
