Allie Quinn on Being a Writer

Whimsical Wednesdays

Please welcome guest author, Allie Quinn. to Jessica Aspen Writes. Allie not only writes erotic romance about vampires, but she also moonlights in paranormal suspense under the pen name, Allie Harrison. Today she’s sharing with us what it’s like to write erotic in the real world.

under the cover of moonlight by allie quinnHi! I’m Allie Quinn.  I write erotic romance. I also write as paranormal/suspense as Allie Harrison. UNDER THE COVER OF MOONLIGHT by Allie Quinn, released June 10, 2014, by Loose Id, is the second in my Moonlight Assassins series. My Moonlight Assassins are the good guys. Never mind they are also vampires, and not your run of the mill vampires, either. No, my vamps can be out in the sunlight and can eat regular food. Do not get on the bad side of my vamps!

In UTCOM, Zack McCullin travels to a small mountain town determined to stop Rachel Maxwell, who he believes has stolen his research information. What he soon discovers—besides his attraction to Rachel—is something far more deadly.

I’m careful who I tell I’m a author, even more I’m an erotic writer. A fellow high school graduate congratulated me when I told him I was an author. When he introduced me to his wife, however, whom I’d never seen before, and told her I’m a published author, she looked at me and said, “Oh, I’ll bet you write smut.”

I smiled and said, “I write award-winning novels.”

Writing has always been my stress relief. After a bad day anywhere, I can sit down, place my fingers on the keyboard, fall deep into another world, and fall in love or kill off someone I don’t like. I miss gothic stories and Stephen King is my first true hero, creating stories I couldn’t stop reading until the end. My goal is to scare you like he does, but make you fall in love, too. I never planned to write erotic romance. It kind of fell into my lap with the rejection of a fun ghost story. So here I am. Some people make fun of erotic, but I can honestly say keeping the sex fresh is very hard (no pun intended).

I don’t believe in writer’s block. I believe sometimes the words come and sometimes they don’t. I don’t believe in wasting my time since I’m only given a certain number of minutes. So if the words aren’t coming, I get up and do something else. I keep a notebook, pen and flashlight by my bed for when the words come in the middle of the night. I prefer to write with colored pens, usually purple or blue. I also think the use of blues and purples on covers go over well.

I’m usually inspired by characters I see around me. I can stand in line at WalMart, watch people and play the ‘what if’ game.

Of course I’ve had rejections. If I get feedback from them, I use it. Such is the case when my ghost story was rejected. I see a rejection as a new path I’m supposed to take, not as a road block. It’s like getting laid off. You aren’t meant to be there. You’re meant to be somewhere better. Never be afraid to try a new path and never stop looking ahead.

Under Cover of Moonlight

When Zack McCullen thinks his research program has been stolen by Rachel Maxwell, he wants nothing more than to kill her. At the very least, he wants her arrested. But something about her photo haunts him and makes his heart pound. He even dreams about her. When he finally meets her in person, he’s blindsided by his burning desire for her. As hard as he fights it, with one touch of her hand, he loses the battle.

After one passion-filled night, Zack knows she’s the soulmate destiny has chosen for him. There’s no way in hell he can allow her to be taken from him, much less arrested; he can’t live without her. Then he discovers who the true thief is, and anger gives way to terror. Terror of the thief, but more, terror that neither he, nor the passion he’s discovered with Rachel, will survive under the cover of moonlight.

The Dead Series is Reborn From the Ashes

Thursdays Bite

A PARANORMAL BLOG

dead awake by lizzie t leafOne of my fellow Colorado Romance Writers, LizzieT. Leaf has been writing romance for several years. Lizzie has a terrific dry sense of humor and is known for her “humor with heat”. Some of her first books became the very popular Dead Series, that has been out of print for awhile. I read Dead Awake under it’s first incarnation and I’m excited to say it will be available July 21st from MUSA Publishing, and will be followed soon after by Dead FaintDead Hunter, and Dead Memory.

Lizzie will be a guest on Paranormal Freebies on August 17th, but if you want to know more, definitelyjoin Lizzie on the Rising From the Ashes Blog Tour kicking off July 9th. For dates and locations check out Lizzie’s Blog HERE . Prizes available.

Dead Awake

After a night of passion Deb Stein wakes up to the scent of pine and the discovery her life has changed forever. Now instead of the glare of paparazzi flashbulbs, she’s in the spotlight as Dovey Divine, who takes it off for a room full of lusting strangers. Her goal now is revenge on the man who turned her into one of the living dead.

Aaron Lowell’s one night stand left him consumed with guilt in taking his partner to the dark side. He knows she’s out for blood…his…and he can’t blame her anymore than he can forget her.

Dead Faint

Billie Joyce’s life-time dream of visiting New York City comes true, but the life changing experience is totally different than what she anticipated.
The blonde angel who saved her from death is one of the living dead and now, so is Billie Joyce. Problem is, she faints at the sight of blood. To make things more frustrating, she has to contend with a man who can find nothing right with her. Of course, he would have to be the one who creates more sensations in her body than she ever had when she was alive.
Marcus fights his attraction to the lavender eyed beauty who talks like she stepped out of My Fair Lady. After all, he’s no Henry Higgins, plus he got over the sex thing centuries ago. Besides, as the new King of the Vampires, who has time for women?

Dead Hunter

dead hunterArie Anne Hews is a trained vampire hunter out for the kill. A chance meeting with the hated beings has Arie in turmoil. Especially, when handsome Dr. Jonas Nickels is on the scene.

Jonas Nickels has no desire to be involved with a mortal, but can’t resist the dark-eyed beauty. Even if he is on her hit list.

Family secrets tinged with evil make an impossible path for star-crossed lovers.

Dead Memory

dead memory by lizzie t leafDiscovering an unconscious man who may be vampire, in the neighbor’s yard leads werewolf Tawny Howls down a love path that’s not going to make her father happy. She senses this man is different, but that doesn’t stop her attraction. Werewolves and vampires are traditional enemies, and it doesn’t help when he remembers nothing about his prior life.

Awakening to find a beautiful woman hovering over him, he remembers nothing of his past life. When Tawny decides to call him David, he’s fine with the name and the attention he receives from his nurse. But why does the scent of the prey she hunts excite him more than the food she cooks?
Can the strong attraction between a shifter and a vampire overcome years of distrust for each other’s species? Will the discovery of his true identity ensnare them in a battle that endangers their lives, in an effort to save mankind from Demon rule?

Let me know if any of you are familiar with Lizzie’s writing. Do you like snarky heroines put into hysterical situations? Do you read funny paranormal? What funny paranormal authors have you read besides Lizzie’s books and what do you like about them?

The Bite Before Christmas Review

Thursday’s Bite

A paranormal blog

ΩΩΩ

Romance has a wonderful tradition of presenting us with themed collections of stories. We see Halloween stories and Valentines Day stories, but mostly there are Christmas collections. But Heidi Betts’ The Bite Before Christmas is the first paranormal Christmas story collection I can remember reading.

I was first introduced to Heidi’s through her modern (and definitely not paranormal) book Tangled in Love, a knitting romance. Fun, flirty and filled with yarn and pretty hot romance I enjoyed her style, but since I read mostly paranormal I didn’t look hard for Heidi’s other books. I consigned her to the cozy hot chick lit section, and moved on.

But Heidi is not keeping to her box. (Actually she writes a large variety of stories from chick lit to HQN Desires to westerns.) Oh no! Heidi has broken out and now writes paranormal, so when I saw she’d authored a Christmas collection of novellas, I decided The Bite Before Christmas has to jump to the top of the TBR pile.

I enjoyed it. Funny, sweet, and paranormal, this book is just the type of light reading I love for the holidays. Broken into three separate stories, each about modern day vampires, The Bite Before Christmas was a treat. I know it’s a little late for the actual holiday, so if you want to read about vampires, but don’t want anymore Christmas, you might try Heidi’s other paranormal books. Her latest is entitled Must Love Vampires, if you read it, let me know if you liked it!

And if you’ve tried The Bite Before Christmas, let me know what you think. Did you read a Christmas book this year? What are some of your favorites?
