To Backstory Or Not To Backstory

Thursdays Bite

a blog to explain to readers

Like most authors, I struggle with reading my reviews. Do I want to know what people liked and disliked? Or maybe I don’t. If it’s a fabulous review, of course I want to read it. But, if it’s negative, especially if I feel like it’s undeserved, it can be rough reading.

Good reviews make me happy dance. Good reviews make me smile. Good reviews sell books. But bad reviews do everything you’d expect them to do—all the opposites. So why read them?

Well, sometimes they also show you your book’s weakness. When I write a book I have to make all kinds of decisions, and one of the decisions is how much backstory to include. That’s especially difficult if the book occurs at the same time as another book and the reader might be reading both books. (At least I’m hoping you’re reading both books.)

When someone reads the books in order, it works very well. They get all the backstory for book two from book one. So they don’t feel like they missed out. And when they get to book two? Well, they don’t feel like I’ve dumped loads of information they’ve already read into the book.

We’ve all read those books. The ones with pages and pages of what happened last time that, if you are really hooked, you just skip. But, if you are not hooked, it makes you put the book down. How much backstory belongs in a book? Too much, too little, just the right amount? How is an author to know?

In SILVER I cut an entire scene where she fights with her sister Scarlett. Why? because it was in Scarlett’s story and I assumed most readers would read books 1-4 and not just pick up book 5. Scarlett’s story is heavy on the sister relationships and covers it in detail, but, you don’t know that if you only read Silver. And that’s what some people do. Crazy, I know. Okay, I do that kind of thing all the time, pick up a series in the middle. But what were the odds that readers would stumble across a book that was so co-dependent with it’s sister book that they really are almost one long story?

In fact, I actually removed a lot of the sister story because my editor said it was repetitious and she was bored. I don’t want to bore readers with repeated story lines. Especially not the readers who are my fans and ARE reading the books in order. But maybe I cut too much?

So, back to those reviews. That’s where this type of issue shows up. I leave out some of the repeated scenes, and guess what, the reader who doesn’t read book #4 misses out when they jump straight to book #5. But do I go back and put in a scene just to show what happened? Do I info dump on the readers who did read the previous book? Do I take the review and fix the issue? Or do I just go on my merry way and keep writing new books and take that information into consideration for future books?

This is especially difficult because I tried something different with these two books. They run concurrently, so they are on the same time frame. I wrote them with the intention that you had to read both. It was an experiment. So, should authors experiment? Maybe that’s a topic for another blog.

Here’s what I’m considering. Not fixing the book. Okay, it’s an issue, but it would be a major rewrite to add in all the sister stuff, it’s already covered in the other book, and it would make it a full length book and not a novella.

BUT…

I still want to fix the issue. Because it is a legitimate complaint. Readers who pick up a book in the middle of a series definitely can expect to miss some backstory, but in this case, it may be a needed component. So I’m considering taking down the two books as separate published entities and only publishing them as an omnibus of books 4&5. That way all of the issues would be addressed in the same book.

In the meantime, the books are the way they are. But I’m thinking of adding to the warning that I put in the front of all of my fairytale books. What do you think of—

BEWARE: There is a serious lack of backstory ahead. If you want the backstory and know all about the relationship between Scarlett and Silver, read the book that comes before this.

And maybe, also addressing the issue in the letter in the back. I don’t want readers missing out on an important component of the story.

On the other hand, I’m knee deep in writing more books, so I also don’t want to take tons of time away from those. I want them to come out in a timely fashion. And I know most of you are waiting for the next one.

What do you think?

Should I squish them together into one book? Or, should I simply address it in the front and back of the book and let readers who pick up the book on it’s own know that they can find out all about the sister stuff in Scarlett? Leave me a comment and let me know your opinion.

Scarlett Released!

Scarlett: A Sexy Shifter Fairytale Romance by Jessica Aspen

Trapped in an isolated cabin with trouble on the way, how is Scarlett to know that the man who could be her prince is actually a bear shifter in disguise.

Scarlett Rose screwed up—she used show and tell to prove to her sister that her boyfriend was a jerk. A year later and Silver is still pissed, but Scarlett is given a gift from the grave—their grandfather has left a will that forces the two of them to live together in his cabin deep in the heart of the Colorado Rockies. Now Scarlett has the chance to make her sister see that she’ll do anything—even change her wild ways for good—all for the chance to earn Silver’s forgiveness.

But the Rose girls don’t know that the mountain they grew up visiting every summer has been the home to bear shifters for years—and now the bears want the land back. All the land.

Rose sisters…or no Rose sisters.

Cam Beresford has spent his life being the town drunk’s son. Even now, when he and his brothers are finally successful game designers, the town’s old guard still sees them as unpredictable wild cards. But when the last non-shifter owner on Beresford Mountain dies, Cam knows this is his chance to buy back the property and show the town that the Beresford boys are not their father’s sons.

But, Scarlett isn’t as anxious to sell the property as Cam thought a city girl would be. And with someone on the mountain leaving nasty presents for the Rose girls, Cam’s inner bear is roused to protect, even if Scarlett is merely human.

With the danger growing increasingly higher and Silver threatening to leave, Scarlett’s time is running out. And when Cam tumbles over the edge of desire into the mating dance, will he be able to pull back? Or will his bear take over and take Scarlett to the edge?

Lions and wolves and bears, oh my!

Each of us has “hidden” a character named Cameron in our stories. Mine is extra special to me because he (0r she!) is a character already in another Sexy Shifter Fairytale Romance and is getting their own book very soon. (Is that a hint? Maybe!)

Now on to the blog!

*****

Bears vs Wolves, are you taking sides?

Well, I do write both. My Sexy Shifter Fairytale Romances are fairy tale based, and so I naturally started with Little Red Riding Hood, and turned it into RED, my feisty wolf shifter heroine and after I wrote her brother’s story Snow, I thought, hmm, more wolves? Are there more fairytales with wolves?

Well none came to mind, but what did come to mind was Golidlocks and the Three Bears. So I had fun twisting Goldi and Zeke’s story. But after I did I was left with the question: did I like writing bears or wolves better and what should I write next?

What if you write both and love both?

Turns out I do love writing both wolf shifters and bear shifters, but there are some basic differences. When I write the bear romances I think of what a real bear is like. They’re bigger and bulkier. Surprisingly fast. They have amazing senses of smell, much more sensitive than a wolf’s and that’s something I had to learn. I thought the wolves would be better at scenting things, but no, bears can smell food and their mates for miles.

Bears are also kind of unsociable, especially compared to wolves. They don’t like to live with others, they seem to me more surly and individual. So I put my bears on bear mountain and made it clear that they like space. So much space that they don’t even mind sharing the small town of Smittsville with humans. Why? Because the humans add space between the bears.

What about wolves?

Wolves are obviously pack animals. What I kind of think of as tribal. So much so that in my first book, Red, when Evan comes to Radon, Colorado they treat him as an outsider. They hide all the women of mating age from him and make him feel very unwelcome. And in the end, it comes down to the pack or Evan. And Red has to decide.

Wolves seem more fun to me. Like they love rolling in the grass and tracking rabbits for hours, even if they aren’t hungry. They do it for fun. Not that they are killing randomly, no the wolves of Radon respect nature. But they aren’t adverse to chasing a rabbit and getting distracted from the trail.

What about the romance?

So, how do I use the differences between the bears and the wolves when I write a romance? Well, if you’ve read Red, Snow and Cinder, all wolf shifters, pack is the priority and it frequently comes into conflict with the romance. Especially since all three of those have human love interests. I also used that in Goldi, since that’s a cross species romance between a bear shifter and a wolf shifter. Goldi is isolated from her pack and it makes her vulnerable. And Zeke, the bear, is a loner who needs his mate.

And then apply heat!

Alpha wolves get dominance issues in bed and out. I loved playing with the dominance and submissive behavior in the bedroom when I wrote Red. And when you talk about surly bears, Zeke’s first hot scene with Goldi definitely walked the edge of dangerous.

So, do I  love writing the bear shifters more or the wolves? I’m sure you can tell I enjoy both. And luckily, I get to chose which kind of character fits the romance. Do I need a social animal/hero? Or do I need an anti-social, unruly hero? Or heroine. You know, I haven’t written a heroine who’s a bear yet. Hmm. Definitely need to get back to writing!

What do you love reading best? Wolves or bear shifters? What about lions? I’ve had a sexy, Latin lover taking over my imagination for a long time and it took me a while to realize that he needs a big cat. Maybe a mountain lion? What do you think? Leave me a comment below and tell me your favorite shifter.

Writing Cinderella

Moonday Mania

a blog for the fairy tale romance lover

A funny thing happened to me this morning. I got an email from my fabulous crit partner ML Guida and it said, “I just watched Disney’s Cinderella, I think you should write a Cinderella romance.”

LOL!

ML (Mary) is one of my fellow writers in the CHAIN OF LOVE: Curvy Women and the Men Who Chain Their Hearts writing experiment, and even though she didn’t get a chance to read or critique CINDER: A Sexy Shifter Fairytale Romance, she’s been looking at my cover and reading my blurbs and listening to me talk about fairy god mothers and glass slippers for the last three months. So how come she didn’t know it was a Cinderella story?

Good question.

Cinder-logo-1600x2400So, it got me to wondering: what I was missing. The book cover doesn’t scream Cinderella. It does say sexy romance, and it does say wolf shifter romance, but there are no glass slippers, no pumpkins, and no chubby fairy godmother’s with sparkly wands.

Okay, so what about the blurb? Does that say Cinderella?

When curvy Cinderella meets a charming reluctant alpha, can he save her from a step mother who means murder?

Cinder Vandeburg dreams getting away from her overbearing step mother and getting a real job—one that pays. When her stepsisters are finalists in a teen modeling competition at a chic resort in the beautiful mountains of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, her step mother offers her an opportunity: prove herself a competent personal assistant and earn not only a stellar referral, but a bona-fide introduction to the movers and shakers of the modeling world. This is Cinder’s chance at freedom but as usual, her stepmother seems to find fault in everything she does—even when she sends her to seduce suspected modeling judge, Aiden Burdock.

Aiden is no modeling judge. He’s a tour guide with a pack of bachelor wolves depending on him to rustle up quality clients and keep their business afloat. But Aiden never wanted to be an alpha. He dreams of freedom and running wild in the hills. Having six…no seven…now eight wolves depending on him for leadership and jobs is more than he counted on when he fled pack expectations in Colorado. But his alpha tendencies can’t be ignored and when he sees curvy Cinder being treated as the runt of the litter, he lies and says he’s a judge to get her away from her malicious boss.

Now Aiden is faced with how to tell Cinder he’s just a working stiff, like her, and a wolf shifter to boot. As Aiden and Cinder’s fairy godmother build up her self esteem and she starts falling in love with a man of secrets.

Lions and wolves and bears, oh my.

Discover why readers love the twisted tales of Jessica Aspen’s Sexy Shifter Fairytale Romance.

Yes, I think so. Not only does it say she’s a curvy Cinderella, it says there’s an evil stepmother, stepsisters, and a fairy godmother, and while Aiden isn’t exactly portrayed as Prince Charming, I do say “charming reluctant alpha” in the tagline.

So how did she miss it?

Well, I don’t think she did.

I think that she was actually thinking about the TALES OF THE BLACK COURT, because I haven’t done a Cinderella story there. I’ve done Snow White in both series, and I’ve done Beauty and the Beast and The Frog Prince in TALES OF THE BLACK COURT, but I haven’t done Cinderella.

Why not? And why did I wait until book six of the SEXY SHIFTER FAIRYTALE ROMANCES to do Cinderella. Why not do it first?

Because it’s so hard! Or I thought it would be. I tried for a year before I wrote Cinder to figure out Aiden’s story. I’d already written him in Snow, he’s the alpha of Seth’s new bachelor pack, and I knew he needed his own story, but I seriously was going to do a Beauty and the Beast story because Cinderella was just not flowing.

But then I had the opportunity to write the curvy romance, and suddenly, Cinder’s tale was in my head, and writing it was one of the easiest twisted fairy tales I’ve ever written. Leticia Du Monde, her sassy, sexy, plus-size fairy godmother of the modeling world, nearly wrote herself, and Cinder’s stepmother and stepsisters sprang to life without any trouble at all. I just knew how the story would go.

And when that happens, it’s magic.

It’s like the first book in the TALES OF THE BLACK COURT. Writing THE DARK HUNTSMAN wasn’t easy, but that’s because it was my first complete long novel and I needed to learn a lot about writing, but the story? Easy. Same thing with RED. I wrote the first draft in three weeks. Love it!

So, when a Cinderella romance that works in the fantasy romance world of TALES OF THE BLACK COURT comes to mind, I’ll write it. Meanwhile, I’ve had the Snow Queen story percolating for nearly four years in the back of my mind, long before Frozen or the new Snow Queen movie appeared, so that’s what’s coming next. And of course, for those of you who read BROKEN MIRROR, I’ve set up Sleeping Beauty.

In the meantime, Mary, you’ll have to stick with sexy wolf shifters and Cinderella romance. I loved writing it and I think it’s my favorite to date. I hope it’s yours too. At least until the next book comes out!

Meanwhile you can still pre-order Cinder and all of the Chain of Love books for 99 cents each on Amazon. Click HERE for a list of books and links.

Do you want a Cinderella tale for the TALES OF THE BLACK COURT? What about some of the other fairy tales I’ve not written at all, like Rapunzel? Now that’s a fairytale with some deep ideas in it. Would you like Repunzel? What other fairytales do you love?
