Rom Con 2016 is here!

Thursday’s Bite

a blog for the romance readers who love to party!

Rom Con 2016 is here in Denver and I’m going!

Have you ever been to a romance reader convention? I haven’t been in a few years, but they are party all the time fun!

If you are going, make sure to stop by my signing table, say hi, and check out all the cool fairy tale ornaments I found to decorate with. Cinderella’s coach and slipper, black velvet deer (wish they’d had pucas!), and delicate sparkly pumpkin leaves.  (Shh, don’t tell Jeff how much I spent.)

signing-table-092816

Or find me in the bar (wink, wink). I’ll be having fun all weekend meeting and greeting with readers and doing fun activities including a scavenger hunt and karaoke. WOOT!

I haven’t been to a reader con in a few years, so I’m testing out the waters to see how it goes. I know I’ll have fun, that’s what these things are for, but I’m also hoping to meet some new people and find like minded fairy tale readers, or shifter readers, or paranormal romance readers who just want to talk magic and mayhem in books!

That’s all folks. Take care and hope you are having a super fun and romance filled September!

Discover Jessica Aspen’s Hot New Website

Moonday Mania

a blog on the craft of writing

TA-DA!

I’m thrilled to present my new, updated website. First of all I want to credit my graphic artist, Viola Estrella of EstrellaCoverArt.com. Viola has done some fabulous covers for several friends of mine and when I looked around for someone to help me re-vamp my site, she was the one I knew I wanted to work with. Viola was very patient and paid attention to my list of needs and wants and understood exactly what I wanted, even when I wasn’t sure I did. Thanks Vi!

Why re-vamp my website at all? I had a perfectly usable website. I blog three days a week and I have a decent amount of followers. Why would anyone want to mess with that? Well, that’s really the subject of today’s blog.

Branding.

No, I’m not talking about hot irons, although it truly can feel that way. I’m talking about having a website consistent with your writing style and the image you want to present. I didn’t have it. My website was nice, and the black and white pictures that Jeff and I took had a subtle creepy feel. I managed to get the site to edge a little onto the paranormal side. But I missed out totally on the hot, steamy, lick my lips sexy side. And I wanted it.

At Rom Con 2012 I had an epiphany. Not my first, and likely not my last. I seem to need to get hit in the head with a brick now and then to understand which path I need to take. Rom Con was a big party, and I hung out with not just the paranormal people, but the erotic authors. And it was there, in the middle of the Chocolate Mangasm, playing pass the dildo, that I had my epiphany. I am an erotic author.

But you wouldn’t know that by my website. Something had to change.

I either had to say goodbye to my publishing career, as I have come to know it, or I needed to say goodbye to my Jessica Aspen Writes website. TA-TA cute website. Hello sexy, dark, and  paranormal.

This is my brand now. Hot spicy romance that walks on the dark side of the knife. I always had it in me. It’s what I write. But I haven’t always put it out there. It took playing games in a room full of women who read erotic romance and love them to understand that I need to have a complete vision of my writing, my career, and my stories.

So welcome to the dark side. Dare to enter my world. Explore my website. See if you can find my secret page (hint; I made it easy if you look). And discover your imagination.

Immortal Hope and Claire Ashgrove

Thursdays Bite

a  paranormal Blog

Templar knights, archangels and archaeology form the basis for Claire Ashgrove‘s new series The Curse of the Templars. Don’t just stop at the gorgeous covers, turn the books over for  the enticing summary on the back.

claire ashgrove's immortal hope mass market paperbackCENTURIES AGO,

Templar knights defied the archangels and unearthed the copper scroll, revealing the gates to hell. Cursed for their forbidden act, they forever roam the earth protecting mankind from evil. But darkness stalks them, and battles they fight bring them ever-closer to eternal damnation. One promise remains to give them salvation – the return of the seraphs.

Embittered by his purpose, Merrick du Loire must honor an ancient pact and bring peace to his cousin’s soul. When he stumbles upon history professor Anne MacPherson, he discovers she possesses a sacred artifact that marks her as a seraph. Duty demands he set aside his personal quest and locate the knight she’s fated to heal. As he struggles with conflicting oaths, Anne arouses buried hope and sparks forbidden desire that challenges everything he’s sworn to uphold.

Anne has six weeks to complete her thesis on the Knights Templar. When Merrick takes her to the Templar stronghold, he presents her with all she needs—and awakens a soul-deep ache, he alone can soothe. Yet loving Merrick comes with a price. If she admits she’s destined for him, her gift of foresight predicts his death.

Claire is not only talented, she’s beautiful and charming, as I was lucky enough to discover when I sat down at the table she hosted at Rom Con 2012‘s paranormal dinner. From providing free books, bookmarks, trading cards and little gifties to keeping up a lovely conversation we had a wonderful evening. I knew as soon as I picked up her book, that it was one that I would be very interested in. Templar knights are a wonderful source of mystery and magic and this isn’t Claire’s first series. She’s an experienced author who not only writes paranormal, but also has historical and contemporary novels and novellas.

Claire was just one of the many authors I met at Rom Con this year. I can’t wait to try her book and I encourage all of you to pick it up and come back and let me know what you think.

Rom Con 2012 Part Deux

Moonday Madness

a blog on the craft of writing

I’m sneaking in a Monday blog today, just so I can blog about Rom Con. I’m so excited to be giving away two tickets to Rom Con simply by blogging about it! WOOT! The lovely people at RomCon 2012 have told me if I blog twice about it, they will send the tickets, so leave a comment to be entered in the final drawing.

I blogged about some of the reader events on Saturday, and you can read about it HERE (and leave a comment, the more entries, the more likely you’ll win!). Today I’m blogging about the author experience.

Why would you attend Rom Con as an author? It is a lot of work. At Rom Con authors are the main attraction and it is a lot of work. We run the events. The carnival games, the author panels, the strip-a-hero. Oh, wait, I think that’s build-a-hero. Trust me, there will be live models there! Last year they posed for many, many pictures with rabid reader (and author) fans.

And you need to bring freebies. As a reader I came home with all kinds of cool stuff. Not just bookmarks, but useful goodies. Mirrored compacts, luggage tags and nail files. You name it, an author put their name on it. My laptop is now labeled with “She’s Gone Country” as well as my name. BTW if you like mainstream, it’s a great book! Won the Award of Excellence for MS 2011.

Why would any sane author want to work her weekend away and spend her hard earned cash? Because we get to meet readers! I met so many wonderful people last year. I joined the buddy program, and it was wonderful. As a reader I spent time with Jessa Slade and I met new online friends, like Evelyn, reader extraordinaire.

Events such as the Monte Carlo Mystery party (read the invite below) are great ways to meet readers and spend time with them.

You are invited to a party of Epic RomCon Proportions!

Casino RomCon, the largest most extravagant casino in romance conventions, is throwing a party to remember. With the highest rollers and the gutsiest gamblers, the stakes are going to be high and their is no limit to what could happen.

Everyone who is anyone in RomCon is sure to be in attendance for this grand event. Fromthe high rolling hotel guests to the sexy show girl, the cunning cocktail waitress to Elvis himself – the guest list is as unlimited as the possibilites of how the night will end!

Like everything in Vegas. the party will be a gamble and there is no certainty to the events of the evening. Whose secrets will be exposed? Which lies will be uncovered? And who will fall victim to the lawlessness of the night?

Your bets is as good as mine!

It was fun to be a reader, and I’m sure it will be a blast to be an author. Exhausting, but fun. Where else can you get out and meet people from across the country who love romance as much as you do? Where else can you spend an entire weekend saturated in the end product of what you love to do? Writing romance is a solitary activity, but conventions like Rom Con 2012 are where we get to socialize!

This is our event people! Just for us! So take a chance, leave a comment, and you too might be able to rub elbows with other romance readers, and authors.

What kind of freebies do you like best? Do you use all the little items you find in your goodie bag? What about free reads? Or all those pens?

Rom Con 2012

Sensational Saturday

a blog for whatever

Before I get to my topic, I want to remind you about the CRW blog hop. Check out the list HERE and don’t forget there are prizes. Most stops have a free book and at the end we’ll have a gift card drawing, so check out your favorite CRW authors today!

Rom Con 2012 is fast approaching and I’m excited to say that they sent an offer to all their attending authors stating that if we posted two blogs about Rom Con, they would give us some tickets to give away to our readers! So here goes!

I attended RomCon 2011 as a reader, and vowed that I’d be back as an author. Little did I know that my contract for Little Red Riding Wolf would be accepted by Passion in Print Press about a month later. So this year I am attending as an author!

A a reader I found something I didn’t even know existed, a reader centered conference all about romance. We played silly games with our favorite authors and got to know them in a way I never thought I could. I met people like Jessa Slade,  Kimberly Frost and Darynda Jones. And brought home more free books than I could carry.

It was a blast, and this year should be just as fun. I’m very excited about attending the paranormal dinner. This year it’s all about science fiction and representing your species. I’ll have to find a suitable werewolf or fairy costume. Fairy sounds more comfortable, and I think we have wings somewhere!

And I’m going to be a dealer at Monte Carlo night too! I have special gifties for the first fifty people to come to my table. And ML Guida will be a character in the mystery at Monte Carlo that will be going on while everyone is playing cards and having fun. Can’t wait to see who did it.

Tune in next blog to hear about Chocolate Mangasm, Build a Hero, and speed dating authors. Or check out the Rom Con 2012 website and explore. They have book giveaways and a newsletter sign up too. And leave a comment today and on the next Rom Con blog and I’ll have a drawing for those promised free tickets. Comment to enter and win!

Have you ever been  to a conference? Was it centered on writing, business or fun? Have you ever attended a star-con, comic-con or manga-con? What was your favorite part? Shopping? Activities? Being star struck?

Busy, busy, busy…and loving it!

Sensational Saturdays

Thank Goodness it’s flexible and I can write whatever I want!

Getting excited for the convention season! My friend and fellow author Hillary Seidl has already kicked off the season with her trip to Chicago and the Romantic Times convention. Wow! If you have a chance you should hop on over to the RT site and check out the pictures. It really looks like a party. Maybe next year my friends!

romcon badge
But I am joining Hillary and ML Guida at RomCon 2012. That’s in Denver so it’s easy to get to. RomCon is reader centered, so all the activities are for readers and the authors are purely there to provide the entertainment. I’m looking forward to dealing cards at the Monte Carlo night and playing paranormal games.

RomCon is where I met authors Jessa Slade, author of the Marked Souls series and the author of First Grave on the Right, Darynda Jones. Last year was a blast to attend as a reader and I’m very excited to be attending this year as an author. I’ll have free books and other swag to give away and I think the Paranormal Freebies authors have something in the works right now too, but it’s still a secret.

Perpetual Light by Jordan K. Rose

Perpetual Light by Jordan K. Rose

Speaking of Paranormal Freebies, Tuesday we’ll have guest author Jordan K. Rose and she is giving away a free copy of her very cool book, Perpetual Light, so don’t forget to hop over to Paranormal Freebies on Tuesday and comment to enter and win.

Before RomCon I’m attending the CRW mini-con in May with the fabulous Angela Knight, from Carina Press. We actually get a NY editor helping us tweak our manuscripts! I think there is still room if you want to sign up and work on your manuscript for a very reasonable price. You don’t even have to be a member of Colorado Romance Writers or our co-host Heart of Denver Romance Writers. We welcome guests to our min-con’s, and there’s lunch too. Bring a laptop, your manuscript and get ready to work!

Finding Ms. Wright by ML Guida, Hillary Seidl, Lori CorsentinoCRW is doing a second mini-con in August with the talented Kim Killion of Hot Damn Designs. Kim is not just a photographer, or publisher, she is a graphic designer and has done some fabulous cover art for people. She put our header together for Paranormal Freebies and the original cover art for Finding Ms. Wright too. In fact the model for Finding Ms. Wright, Brooks Johnson will be attending our event, so stay tuned for details on the CRW website and find out what else will be happening.

And last, but certainly not least, I’m heading to RWA Nationals. I decided I wanted to do at least one and since I haven’t attended in four years of membership, this seemed to be the year. It’s in a wonderful location, steps from Disney Land (and don’t think we’re not going!). It should be filled with amazing workshops and I expect to touch base with a zillion people. In fact, one of my goals is to find some quality presenters for our very own big convention.

Yes, CRW will be putting on a big convention again, it’s been several years since we tried. The economy torpedoed our efforts, but with the recovery we feel we can plan again, so watch out! A big romance writer con is on it’s way in possibly 2014. And ML Guida and I will be piloting the ship. That in itself is a very scary notion.

Are you attending any fun conventions this year, big or small? Have you ever tried to put on an event like a convention? Where do you go for fun as an author?

Shadow Fall Review

Sensational Saturdays

A blog for whatever I feel like writing

Today I’m posting my end of the month Thursday’s Bite Book Review, delayed one posting by the amazing Hillary Seidl’s take over of Thursday’s Bite. I plan to be back on schedule for the month of November, so check back on the last Thursday of the month for a new review and another Bite.

ΩΩΩΩΩ

Erin Kellison rocks!

Not only is she amazingly sweet and funny, but she can really write romance. Her book Shadow Fall is the second in the series that began with Shadow Bound and continues with Shadow Man out September 2011. I had the opportunity of meeting Erin at Rom Con 2011 and she made our paranormal games a blast.

Shadow Fall tells the tale of ballet artist Annabella whose talent for ballet creates a link between our world and the shadow world. Annabella’s grace and beauty lure not only a shadow wolf, but also tempt a fallen angel, Custo.  Custo’s tale of desperation as he races time and deportation back to heaven to save Annabella from the stalking wolf intertwines beautifully with Annabella’s ballet and the world’s battle against the wraiths.

Confused? You won’t be. I read this as a stand alone and was up to speed immediately without being bogged down in backstory. Ellison’s skill as a story teller sucked me in and kept me wanting more. And I’ve awarded her the coveted five omegas, ΩΩΩΩΩ not just for a superb book I’ll want to read again, but for creating a fabulous series that call me from the shadows.

If you’ve read the first book in the series, Shadow Bound, you will have already met Custo. I have yet to read the first one, but I’ll definitely be on the lookout for the story of Adam and Talia the half-breed daughter of the Shadowman himself. All three of these characters play important roles in Shadow Fall, but the stars are Custo, Annabella and the wolf.

And if you’re like me and love a good series it looks like the fourth in the series a novella entitled, Shadow Touch, will be out June 2011. Definitely add Erin to your TBR pile, in fact put her on the top!

Today is the last day in my Halloween Treats giveaway in celebration of my novella Little Red Riding Wolf available on February 18th, 2012 from Passion in Print Press. Leave a comment to enter in today’s drawing for The Bride Wore Scarlet and to get a final entry into Monday’s drawing for three grand prizes of swag bags and B&N Gift certificates. Contest closes Sunday, October 30th night at midnight!

Thursday’s winner is Sherry Isaac! Congratulations and send me your address through my contact box and we’ll get you your prizes!

Seduced By Shadows Book Review

Thursdays Bite

a paranormal blog

Hello faithful blog readers. I’m starting a new tradition in hopes that I will let myself read more. Now that I write like a fiend I have less time for reading so I’m adding a book review at the end of the month and I’ll also post them on Goodreads. As my current WIP and the last two novellas I have written are were-wolves, I’m alpha obsessed, but handing out letter A’s seemed odd so instead I’ll be handing out purple omegas. Ω

Book Review: Seduced by Shadows, by Jessa Slade

ΩΩΩΩ

Paranormal readers will be shocked to learn that while I had heard of Jessa Slade, I had not read any of her books prior to this month. When Jessa was assigned to me as one of my buddies for Rom Con I ran out in a panic to find her book. How could I possibly be her buddy if I had never read her?

I prayed the book would be good. Because what would be worse than not reading her was reading her book, her baby, and hating it. But I was lucky. I loved it!

Jessa’s incredibly complex opening had me re-reading the first few pages, but instead of shaking me loose it hooked me completely. No simplistic plot line here. No, Jessa has skillfully woven a totally new view of demon possession into a suspenseful plot line that has you rooting for the sinners like they were saints.

I loved the idea that in a moment of weakness, good people are taken over by demons aching to repent. And then that repentance forces the humans to fight evils so the demons gain their repentance. Only a twisted plot crafter could entwine forced labor with a drive for good in such a riveting fashion.

If you are dying for a more intricate plot in your paranormal romance then Jessa Slade’s Marked Soul series is for you.It hooked me right away, and kept me hooked all the way through the book. I loved it so much I almost gave it a top rating of five omegas, but I had to cut it down to four because of the rapid fire confusing beginning. I’m looking forward to discovering what happens to the rest of the demon possessed. We all know how much I love those tortured alphas!

I’m thrilled to announce that Jessa is my buddy and I love her new twist on paranormal. Now I have to run out and find all the rest of her books. Except for Vowed in Shadows because, lucky me, Jessa handed me one on the first night of Rom Con!

And don’t think you can get your hands on my copy, because she signed it in shiny purple ink just to me!

Have you read Jessa Slade? Do you have some recommendations for next months paranormal review?
