It’s here! Ghosts of Christmas Past is released!

Moonday Mania

a blog where we celebrate!

I’m stepping out of my self imposed blog hiatus to whoop it up about releasing my latest book, Ghosts of Christmas Past. (See, I am working and not just having a fun summer holiday.) I’m a little nervous about it because there are no shifters, witches or elves. It’s not a fantasy romance nor is it a twisted fairy tale romance. What it is is something completely different. A contemporary Gothic romance.

And, it’s got a New Adult vibe. So, I really should call it a New Adult Contemporary Gothic Romance.

Oh, I forgot, it’s also a holiday romance. So let’s add that in. A New Adult Contemporary Gothic Christmas Romance. I don’t like to do anything uncomplicated.

It’s shorter than my fantasy books and a little longer than the shifter romances. In fact, it was supposed to be a novella, but it missed the mark and came in at over 40,000 words, so it’s officially a short novel. I toyed with the idea of calling it a novelette but ended up sticking with short novel.

And it’s the first in a series of short novels about the Pierce family in Appleset, Massachusetts. All of these books will be centered around holidays and all of them will have some kind of supernatural element. Maybe the series title will give you a clue as to what kind of supernatural element. Haunted Holidays.

Yep, they will be ghost stories. With all the suspense and horror of a ghost story, tempered by the heat of the romance. Because there is some romance. Okay, more than a little. The heat level in this book is spicy, hotter than my steamy fantasy novels but maybe not quite hitting the heat level of the Twisted Tales: Come Into the Woods shifter romances.

I had a lot of fun writing this one, it was a nice break in between all of my books. I started it in late 2012, after I’d finished Goldi and the Bear and before starting Prince by Blood and Bone. Then it had to sit a while while I wrote Prince by Blood and Bone and published both it and Golid and The Dark Huntsman. Last fall, when I had planned to publish it, I was instaed wrestling with Prince by Blood and Bone’s edits. And this one had to sit by the wayside. But it’s finished now, and it’s something new and different. So I hope you give my venture into the modern Gothic a chance.

To get it off to a good start I’m offering it at 99 cents for the month of August, then I’ll raise it up to it’s regular price of $2.99, so get your copy today!

ghosts of christmas past by jessica aspenGhosts of Christmas Past

A Haunted Holidays Novel

Jen MacNamara flees the Christmas wedding of her best friend and cheating fiancé and runs to the country to spend the holiday alone. It’s the perfect plan, until her unexpectedly sexy neighbor and landlord, Nate Pierce, insists on bringing the holiday to her—complete with a Christmas tree, hot chocolate, and an unexpected kiss.

And that’s not Jen’s only problem.

The cozy country farmhouse is already occupied by something evil. Now Jen’s nights are spent wrapped in sensual dreams of a past life, and her days growing closer to Nate as they solve the mystery of the malevolent ghost that haunts not only the house, but also wants Jen dead.

I’ve pushed published everywhere and it’s available today at:

Available now: Amazon,  Barnes and Noble, IbooksAllRomanceEbooks and Kobo at the limited time price of 99cents!

New Adult Paranormal Or: Bringing Back the Gothic Cover

Moonday Mania

a mystery, an innocent girl, a dark deceptive man…

For the last several years all I’ve heard from authors is: NEED MAN CHEST! Gotta have it on my cover or  it doesn’t say romance. But I don’t just write romance, I write dark paranormal romance, new adult paranormal, or… dare I say it… Gothic Romance.

Right now, and for the past few years, that’s exactly what man chest does. For women, book buyers, editors, the sight of a guy on the cover signals romance. So does a couple in a hot embrace. But what about a solitary woman on the cover, what does that say?

A woman on the cover brings me back to my classic Gothic roots. All those romances where a young woman goes out on her own and deals with a dark, dangerous, sexy, alpha male. Hey wait, isn’t that what I write? Isn’t that the basis for New Adult Paranormal?

Yeah, it is.

So do I need man chest? Does it signal to my group of readers that they are getting what they are looking for?

Um, no.

Why?

the dark huntsman by jessica aspenBecause there is a new trend taking shape. A new, but old trend. The gothic romance is coming back and it’s signaled not by lots of skin, but by lone women. If it’s a YA paranormal you would see a single item a la Twighlight, but the latest trend in NA is a single woman with lots of angst. In other words, a cover like The Dark Huntsman.

Now, strictly speaking The Dark Huntsman is not a gothic, there is no spooky house. (I’m writing a gothic Christmas novella right now, The Ghosts of Christmas Past and that one has a house.) But it has the other elements of a gothic and curously, New Adult Paranormal.

  1.  a young woman, just finding out who she is
  2. a dark, mysterious man. Sexy and just a little bit powerful or intriguing
  3. a mystery

Add in the house and you have a Gothic Romance, just like days of old. Starting with Daphne Du Maurier’s famous line from Rebecca and moving through the golden age of authors like Victoria Holt, Mary Stewart, Barbara Michaels and Phyllis Whitney we see a slew of books about young women going out on their own for the first time and discovering…DANGER.

And love.

the legend of the seventh virgin by victoria holt

And what did those covers look like?

Hmm, let’s look. Any man chest visible? No.

A lone woman, obviously in trouble, and a dark stormy background.

Romance has come full circle with New Adult Paranormal, we’ve come back to the Gothic Romance and I love it. What an opportunity to write angsty heroines, dark mysterious heros, and of course, classic haunted houses. Now in a New Adult Paranormal, you might find something else takes the place of the house, but you would still have the three key ingredients: a young woman in trouble, a dark sexy man, and a mystery.

What books have you read lately that fit this bill? Do you see the trend in romance to come back to the Gothic? Have you read a New Adult Paranormal Romance? Have you dipped your toe into New Adult? What romance trends do you see? Are you still hungry for man chest?

There is still time to enter my Goodreads Giveaway for The Dark Huntsman. Ten print copies, up for grabs! Only three weeks left, so hurry up and enter today.

And if you are on the winners list for The Dark Huntsman e-book giveaway, and you haven’t checked your spam file, please do so. I sent all the winners an email and I’d love to send you your prize!

Crossroads by Megan Keith

Nick is about to head overseas on an adventure of a lifetime.  It’s what he has always wanted, to travel the world, to experience new cultures, see the places he’s dreamed of for so long.  He should be over the moon.  Instead, he’s been in a slump ever since he lost his friend Em.

Nick is a player, always has been.  The first time he ever wanted more from a girl he was shot down.  So now he’s left licking his wounds.  Emma made her choice and now Nick has to live with it.

Or does he?  When he finds out that Emma is single after all, will he fight for her?  Will he be able to convince her to give him a chance?  And if he does, what will happen when he leaves?

Nick has reached a crossroads in his life – the girl or the dream.  Seems like an easy choice when the girl of his dreams is Emma.  But what if she doesn’t see things the same way?

crossroads teaser by megan keith

Excerpt from Crossroads, by Megan Keith

My heart starts to race at the sound of his voice over the loud speaker.  Immediately I seek out the location of the booth and spot him as he walks out of it.  He looks good.  I can’t believe he’s here.  I know my eyes are bugging out of my head but I can’t stop staring.  Not only is Nick the DJ tonight but there he is, in my direct line of sight with his arms around a girl.  And she’s very attractively smiling up at him.

“I’m sorry Em!” Kat yells in my ear.  “I swear he was not the DJ listed to play, you saw the posters outside the club too.”

I swipe at my eyes as angry tears form in them.  She’s right, we had both checked.  There must have been a cancellation or something, it’s the only explanation.  I stand still as a statue as I watch Nick put his arm around the girl’s shoulder and they head for the exit.

“Em.”  Kat’s pulling on my arm.  “Please look at me.”

When I can no longer see Nick, I turn to face her.  The look on her face is a mixture of pity and pleading.

“Who’s for another drink?” I ask with false cheer.  I don’t wait for a reply from either of the girls as I hastily make my way to the bar.  I shove my way to the front, not caring about the toes I’m stepping on or the rudeness of my approach.  I don’t care that I am cutting in line.  I yell out my order for a shot of tequila.  Before I’ve even paid, I have drunk it and ordered another.  Kat spins me back to face her.

“I’m sorry Em.  I swear I didn’t know.”

I turn away from her.  I feel the hot tears about to overflow from my eyes as I hand over my money to the bartender and swallow my second shot.  I look Kat square in the eyes.

“I want to go home.”

Goldi and the Bear Release Day is Coming Soon

Thursday’s Bite

a blog about fun happenings in my paranormal world

I’m getting excited! It’s almost here, the release day blitz for my spicy new adult novella Goldi and the Bear from Bewitching Tours is on Monday, July 22nd, and I’m giving away e-copies! Stop back here on Monday and click on the links. There will be opportunities at all the tour stops to win an e-copy and I’ll be giving away even more books to anyone who visits all sixteen stops and leaves a comment at each one, then comes back here and let’s me know. Two ways to win spicy new adult romance with a fairy tale twist!

goldi and the bear by jessica aspenGoldi and the Bear is the third book in the Twisted Tales: Come Into the Woods Series, and it was  fun one to write. At first I struggled, because the Goldilocks story really only has one girl getting into trouble on her own, but once I looked at why Goldi might need to get into a strange bear’s house, the plot really came together. For Goldi and Zeke, love’s been put on the back burner since high school, and starts to boil over when Goldi’s life is falling apart and Zeke’s life is finally coming together.

This novella is packed with action, spicy romance between  two people still angry over their break up years before, but unable to resist their attraction. Like all the Twisted Tales in this series it has a Romeo and Juliet theme of lovers whose families wouldn’t approve, but unlike the Snow and the Seventh Wolf and Little Red Riding Wolf where the romance is between human and supernatural, in this case it’s between a werebear and a werewolf.

One of the pieces of the plotting puzzle that came together nicely is the suspense plot that weaves through the story. Goldi is about to lose her ranch and she needs her missing father to help her re-finance, but he’s off running around as a wild wolf and she’s on her own dealing with the bank. Add in a mysterious buyer for the ranch, someone setting traps on Zeke’s land, and it all spells trouble for Goldi’s efforts to save the land that’s been in her family for generations.

goldi and the bear release day blitzSo come on back Monday for several chances to win spicy new adult romance with a fairy tale twist!

Non Grammar Divas, Unite!

Moonday Mania

today a blog on writing, tomorrow a blog on who knows what

I’m starting this blog with full disclosure. I am a romance writer. I write hot, sexy, paranormal romance with edge. Frequently about New Adults. What I’m not, is a grammar diva. I have trouble even spelling grammar. I have to think about it. Are there two a‘s or is there an e at the end. I did graph sentences in seventh grade, so I’m pretty good with telling whom the subject of a sentence is. And I’ve learned over the years how to use “whom” vs “who”, although I have to tell you I never ever used whom until I became a full fledged writer about six years ago. Who uses whom? Who cares?

flowers lynn kelley author

These flowers have nothing to do with grammar, mistakes, or who/whom. I just wanted to throw in some pictures and I love what Lynn Kelley posts on Flickr!

Writers care. And once you start hanging around with people who care, and who tell you they are looking at all those tiny things when they read, you start to care too.,

I got through school with good grades in English because here is the trick they never tell you. If you can muddle through, if you write correctly for the most part, if you speak well and act as if you understand, they put you into the higher level classes where they don’t do grammar.

That’s right. At the higher levels of schooling it’s all about writing and reading and understanding, but they won’t let you go there until they think you can do the grammar stuff. You don’t have to be perfect, you just have to be right a higher percentage of the time. So I did my time in seventh grade and learned how to diagram and passed the tests and moved on to classes where no one really worried about it as long as your papers were readable. And mine were readable because I read higher level writers.

From Sci-Fi to classics I read everything, so I naturally learned how to write like the people I read. And I absorbed correct grammar. For the most part.

That’s why I have an editor, a copy editor, and a line editor. They are the magic behind my writing, the people who wave their wands and make sure that what I have to say comes out in a cohesive fashion.

DISCLAIMER: I have no editor for my website or my blog. That’s you, dear reader. I make mistakes. Thankfully, some kind reader will point them out to me and I’m able to fix them. Whew!

Back to the blog:

I appreciate my back up team in endless ways. If they were at my house I would bring them donuts. They aren’t, so they don’t get any, but I THINK about giving them donuts. And considering how unhealthy a donut is I am sure they are thanking me for NOT giving them any crullers, long johns, or honey dipped glazed.

But sometimes, even with all their help. And all their knowledge. I don’t like what they do. What happens when the person who knows grammar does something to your manuscript that you, the author, hates? Do you have the right to speak up? Do you take the risk of offending these people who have done nothing but help you with your writing. After all, they are the smart ones. They passed grammar 101, 202, and 505. Classes I didn’t even have to take to become a writer. All I had to do was sit down and type. They’re the ones that know what’s right. Right?

Not necessarily.

Cana Lillies

Some rules are more flexible than others. Some have more than one right way to do them and it may not be your “voice” to do them the way your copy editor or editor wants you to. That’s why they send you the corrected copy for you to look over. It’s because they are not only imperfect and human too, but there are discretionary powers in being an author.

You have the right and the responsibility to make changes, to ask your editor for a second opinion, to consult grammar books until your fingers get calluses and you actually understand what a dangling participle is. In fact it is not just a right, it’s your job.

I got so excited about this topic that I have written a mini-novel about it, so this blog will be continued. Tune in next time to find out when it is permissible to argue with your editor, the wrong way and the right way to do so, and when you should just roll over and accept the inevitable.

Meanwhile, leave your comments in the box, sign up for my new release only email blasts, and make sure your writing is clear, concise and donut worthy.

I Write New Adult!

Moonday Mania

so what the heck is new adult and how do I know I write it?

This is not an April Fool’s Joke. I’ve made an amazing discovery. My Twisted Tales: Come Into the Woods series is New Adult. So what exactly is New Adult? Contrary to some of the spurious claims by the media it is not YA porn. No, in fact it is targeted at older readers, just not so old they want to read bout forty year old heroines and second marriages. According to NA Alley, a blog targeted specifically for New Adult books, this genre is:

Have you tried this New Adult book?

We view New Adult fiction (NA) as a category of literature—meaning, it gives readers content expectations, but it does not dictate genre-based criteria. Typically, a novel is considered NA if it encompasses the transition between adolescence—a life stage often depicted in Young Adult (YA) fiction—and true adulthood.
Protagonists typically fall between the ages of eighteen and twenty-six, though exceptions may apply. NA characters are often portrayed experiencing: college, living away from home for the first time, military deployment, apprenticeships, a first steady job, a first serious relationship, etc.
Other terms for NA include: Upper YA, Crossover Fiction, and Mature YA.  -http://naalley.blogspot.com/p/about.html

That says it all.

So, I looked at my books. My characters are all under twenty-six and over eighteen. Red (from Little Red Riding Wolf)  is dealing with trying to separate from her over protective family and balance her loyalty to her pack with her desire to go to college. Evan, her love interest, is recently graduated from college and trying to make a new career in the forest service.

Does that sound like the above definition? Yeah, it really does.

Okay, what about Snow and the Seventh Wolf? Snow isn’t as normal as Red. Snow has had to deal with her evil step-mother, but she’s almost twenty-one, about to inherit, and oh-so-ready to split! Seth is angry and dealing with his own issues. He feels differently from his family and he needs to figure out where his priorities lie.

And what about my newest book? Goldi and the Bear (out Fall 2013). Goldi discovers that her dad has lied to her and they are about to lose their ranch, the only home she’s every known and now the only person she can turn to  is her ex-boyfriend, Zeke. Goldi’s learning about facing adult reality: foreclosure, no job (she’s only ever worked on the ranch), and most of all, even your dad is only human. (Actually, he’s a werewolf, but they have human frailties). And Zeke is about to finally make it big, he’s been trying to prove himself to everyone, his dad, his brothers, but especially his ex-girlfriend, Goldi. Now he has to make some hard choices.

These do sound like NA plots. What about themes in NA plots. Well according to NA Alley they can be:

New adult touches on that space between adolescence and adulthood, so there is a wide range of themes and issues to tackle.
Common themes in NA are identity, sexuality, race, alcohol abuse, drug abuse, bullying, empowerment, familial struggles, loss of innocence, fear of failure, etc.
Combine those themes with common new adult issues: living away from home for the first time, military deployment, starting college, engagements and marriages, etc.

While many NA are contemporaries, Tiger’s Curse is a paranormal.

I’ve got all that too! Red has to deal with sexuality and the rules of her pack as well as her identity and the issue of going to college or fulfilling family expectancies  All three books deal with racism. Okay, it’s species-ism, human versus werewolves. That counts! Snow loses her innocence and Seth finds his identity. Goldi learns empowerment through her familial struggles and Zeke faces his fear of failure.

Check, check, check.

Now we come to the big question. What about the heat level. Come on, let’s face it. My books are hot! They are so hot I blush when I talk about them to strangers, my parents, even my writer friends. 🙂

Can NA be hot? I’ve done extensive research on this and the answer is, YES! Come on, the readers are ADULTS. This is the time of life for experimentation, failure, new commitments. Sex is a huge part of adult life. Will you? Won’t you? Should you? So yes, spicy is just fine for New Adult.

Not all New Adult books have sex. Not all New Adult books are romance. They cover a wide range of genres, just like regular adult books and YA. But they do have all these things in common, the age of the main characters and the search for answers. So explore the world of New Adult. I’m trying some right now!
