The Story of a Girl (And Her Spirit Guide)

Thursdays Bite

We’re in the thick of my paranormal guest authors and on to my prolific Colorado Romance Writer chaptermate, Holley Trent. I was first exposed to Holley’s hot contemporary romance, My Nora, at a writer’s retreat and couldn’t wait for it to be published. Since then she’s published many more books and now I’m excited to see her branch out into my favorite genre, paranormal romance. Take it away, Holley!

Marcia—the weirdo heroine from my novel Love by Premonition has a spirit guide named Erilyn. They have a pretty strained relationship. Marcia’s a psychic, but generally doesn’t want to be bothered with anything to do with that other plane of existence. In fact, she has a ghost phobia. Erilyn is, understandably, frustrated by Marcia because of the way spirit guides work. Of all people, Marcia should know better.

Common lore is that we meet with our chosen guides before our next incarnation and plot out the lessons we want to learn in that life. Our guides are silent guardians who steer us toward certain decisions that feed into those lessons. If you’re well enough in tune, supposedly, you can tell what their suggestions are. You feel it in your gut, in your skin, or down your spine when you’re right (or very, very wrong).

Because we don’t remember these pre-birth conferences, the bond between a person and their guide may be thready until something happens that makes them “come through” or else we seek them out.

I come from a line of women who seemed to always have one foot in the other realm. As a kid, I thought my grandmother was a bit loco when she’d say someone visited her in her sleep. This was the same woman who had an eerie prescience about things that should have been surprises. Pregnancies? Sicknesses? Kids sneaking out of the house? She knew.

(But, this was the same woman who’d always told me to never let a woman I didn’t trust touch my hair because she might take some and put “roots” on me.)

My mother has claimed to have spirits talk to her in her sleep and to have had some precognitive episodes.

Me? Let’s just say I’ve had enough run-ins with the weird and unexplainable that I’m becoming less of a skeptic as I age. (Try telling that to a therapist.) I’m pretty sure I’ve “met” my spirit guide. Her name, if I understood her correctly, is Candace.  She mostly hangs back, because like Marcia, I freak the hell out whenever there’s a spirit around. I try to tune in and listen whenever I’m having internal conflicts, but beyond that, she gives me space. Why? Well, there’s a part in the book where Erilyn brings Marcia’s late grandfather through. Grandfather or not, it’s unsettling for her, just like it was unsettling for me that night my grandmother popped in to say “howdy.”

Because Candace is far kinder than Erilyn, she doesn’t make the vessel Marcia is. And thank goodness, because my mind couldn’t take the constant chattering from Beyond.

This is how I got the spark of creativity for Love by Premonition. The outlandish things in that book are all grounded in reality. Or at least, my perception of it.

The psychic didn’t go looking for love, but she should have seen it coming.

Marcia Andrews is a freelance psychic consultant. Sick of living hand to mouth, she accepts a contract with Raleigh Police. A new gang called The Cardinals is terrorizing The Triangle, and Marcia gives the department an edge in tracking them. Help that she is, one cop isn’t so keen on her involvement, and makes sure she knows it.

Detective Nat McCoy would rather see Marcia in his bedroom than the bullpen. The gorgeous Scotsman isn’t the typical chauvinist pig, though. He’s keeping a secret that even the psychic doesn’t anticipate.

A close encounter with a Cardinal’s bullet knocks Marcia off her game when the police need her most. She loses hours to trances and ghosts haunt her sleep. She can hardly function, and everything she thought she knew about playboy McCoy suddenly seems questionable. McCoy thinks he knows the cure for what ails her—him. But can she trust him?
