As you know, I love twisting fairy tales, and there are so many ways to do it.
I’m also a fan of reading and watching twisted fairy tales and watched all of Grim from it’s growth as a monster of the week show with a too-soft hero to it’s massively twisted ending that had nothing to do with fairy tales at all. And hubby and I also watched Once Upon a Time.
We’re still watching Once Upon a Time, but they almost lost us this season.
They’ve twisted the twist so hard that even Jeff and I, hard-core fantasy, sci-fi, and adventure consumers, almost turned it off. I’m the type of person who can pickup a book mid-series and love it, but to have a series that you’ve watched from day one and that has grown through the years and have it do a total re-boot? That took balls, Disney!
I’ve twisted almost all of the traditional favorite fairy tales into my romances.
From sexy shifters to hot alpha elves, the twist is on! But one of the things that I’ve found is that there is a limit to which stories the general public is ready to read. If they’re familiar with the twist, i.e. Snow White, then it’s all good. But when you use a fairy tale that is less known, then readers drop off.
So, what’s a writer to do?
Yes, I’ve done this too. I currently have two Snow White twists: The Dark Huntsman and Snow: A Sexy Shifter Fairytale Romance, and you know what? I could easily write a hundred versions of Snow White. Or any of the fairytales. Just like Once Upon a Time, there are so many ways you can write and re-write and twist those tales.
And that’s exactly what’s up next!
I’ve started over too! I’m writing in a brand new section of Underhill, and I’m twisting the classic fairy tales. While I’ve tried to choose fairy tales that I haven’t turned into fantasy romance, I might just have to re-do one or two. But the very cool thing is…
I’ve rediscovered my mojo!
Convoluted plots are my thing and I’m super happy to be back in the thick of the fairy tale world where there are secret babies, and princesses stuck in towers, and impossible quests before the romance can find it’s way to a happy ending. Oh, and there has to be a happy ending. Isn’t that why we stick with the twist?
Just in case you’ve missed my twisted fairy tale romances, here’s the list!
