WOOT! It’s almost time for fairy tale romance!

Hi there!

Super excited to be unveiling the cover for ASHES, the first book in the TALES OF THE CRIMSON COURT. My cover artist spent a lot of time getting this one just right, including changing not only Finn’s eyes to this luscious blue, and adding subtle blue highlights to his hair, but making sure he has the ears of an elf! You wouldn’t believe how hard that is. 🙂

And I love the darling pumpkin coach, it looks just like the one in the book!

An enslaved princess, a charming thief, and a power-hungry step-mother out for revenge…

ASHES: a twisted Cinderella tale of romance and magic

I hope you love it as much as I do and look forward to hearing your opinion on the newly renamed Facebook group: Jessica Aspen Book Party!

Have a great day!

What’s in the works?

Thursdays Bite

Hi there,

It’s been a busy year already. I’ve published one novella, SASSY WOLF, and I’m busy writing an entire new fantasy romance series. No, I’m not going to tell you yet what it is. But I will tell you that I have the prequel done and will be releasing it to my newsletter in June. 🙂

Yay!

And the rest of the series will launch in July.

I tried to write a few other things besides fantasy romance, but it just didn’t work for me. And those twisted fairy tales kept calling. I really enjoy figuring out new ways to include the classic fairy tale tropes in a brand new way. So, I gave up and dove back into the fabulous world of Underhill and the Tales of the Black Court.

But it’s all new fairy tales! Yes, that’s right. Okay, some of them I’ve done in other series, but they will be all new to the world of Underhill. And it’s been lots of fun. I’m excited about the series, and I know you will be too. And that’s truly the most important thing to me.

Can’t wait to start telling you more, so stay tuned. June is coming fast! And so are the new fantasy romances. WOOT!

What’s tops in Fantasy Romance?

Thursdays Bite

Want to know what the bestselling fantasy romances are? Here’s your chance.

Once a month I’m going to feature a top fantasy romance book and author and this week I’m starting with the fabulous Emily R. King and her top-selling book, THE HUNDREDTH QUEEN.

As of March 7th, 2018 when I’m writing this blog, THE HUNDREDTH QUEEN is not only in the number one fantasy romance slot on Amazon, but it’s also earned the coveted “Best Seller” tag. And when we look at this book, we can see why. It has a gorgeous cover, very simple, but with a tiny spark it implies magic awaits us between the covers or inside of our Kindle.

51u9e2b7dafl-_sx332_bo1204203200_

It also has an intriguing plot. Here’s the blurb:

In Emily R. King’s thrilling fantasy debut, an orphan girl blossoms into a warrior, summoning courage and confidence in her fearless quest to upend tradition, overthrow an empire, and reclaim her life as her own.

As an orphan ward of the Sisterhood in the ancient Tarachand Empire, eighteen-year-old Kalinda is destined for nothing more than a life of seclusion and prayer. Plagued by fevers, she’s an unlikely candidate for even a servant’s position, let alone a courtesan or wife. Her sole dream is to continue living in peace in the Sisterhood’s mountain temple.

But a visit from the tyrant Rajah Tarek disrupts Kalinda’s life. Within hours, she is ripped from the comfort of her home, set on a desert trek, and ordered to fight for her place among the rajah’s ninety-nine wives and numerous courtesans. Her only solace comes in the company of her guard, the stoic but kind Captain Deven Naik.

Faced with the danger of a tournament to the death—and her growing affection for Deven—Kalinda has only one hope for escape, and it lies in an arcane, forbidden power buried within her.

But is THE HUNDREDTH QUEEN a fantasy romance?

Well, yes and no. I think I’d put THE HUNDREDTH QUEEN in the fantasy genre first, and then the romance genre second. While each book has a romance element, you have to read the series for the romance. That says to me that the romance is not the primary element, the fantasy story is. Compare that to my TALES OF THE BLACK COURT, where each book has a satisfying romance and then the fantasy is the component that links the series together.

And I think the cover says this. It doesn’t have people on the front and all the covers and titles in the series emphasize the heroine’s journey. Is there a romance? Sure, but I’m not sure any true romance fanatic would say that “stoic and kind” is a typical hero for a romance. Will it evolve into romance. I’ll give you a hint. From the blurb in the second book, I think so. But there is no mention of the stoic hero in book three’s blurb, so I think that speaks for itself.

Should you read it?

While I have yet to sample this one myself (too many books on the TBR pile!) I’d say the 4.5 star rating and 348 satisfied customer reviews would say: ABSOULUTELY!

Even though THE HUNDREDTH QUEEN technically leans more toward fantasy than romance, I’m definitely adding this to my teetering pile of books as we speak. I love the concept and the cover, and I totally respect that many positive reviews. So dive on into Emily R. King’s series and when you do, please come back and tell me all about it.

Have you read THE HUNDREDTH QUEEN? Did you love it? Leave a comment and let me know what you thought—fantasy romance? Or fantasy with romance?

Musings on being an author

So, I’m officially a romance author. I have written and published 9 full length fantasy and paranormal romance novels, 9 novellas and one short story. I also have an additional free short and free novella that you can only find in my newsletter, so really, that’s 20 books out the door since I very first published in 2012.

Wow!

And in that time I’ve learned a tremendous amount.  One of the things I’ve learned is that I like to write in large chunks of time. In other words, I do best when I have more than one hour to sit and write. In fact, my preferred amount of time is at least three hours broken up into forty-five minutes of writing and fifteen minutes of movement. Usually housecleaning. LOL 🙂

This year I learned something else: my readers enjoy reading the books that I enjoy writing. You see, I wrote a short romance novella this year and for me it was a good experience, but a quickie. I had a lot of constraints I don’t normally have. I had to write in someone else’s universe. I had a book length requirement. And, I had a super short time constraint.

I burned through this novella in record time and frankly, it shows. For the very first time I’m getting four-star reviews that say: Loved it. Cute story, but predictable.

PREDICTABLE!

Ouch!

I always want my readers to be honest, and it’s tough to complain about four star reviews, but these hurt. They hurt more than the one-star reviews because these reviews are from my go-to readers, readers who love my paranormal and fantasy romances, readers who can’t wait for the next one and the next one and the next one.

So, I’m changing it up. I‘m going back to the drawing board.

While I enjoyed writing this book, it really wasn’t my thing. What is my thing? Longer fantasy romances with convoluted exciting plots and deep dark characters. I love writing them and my readers love reading them. 🙂

And I’m taking my time.

I’ve become a super fast writer, but that also means I need to go back and take my time over my edits. I’m going to give myself that time. Even if it means I don’t have a new romance come out until June. Yeah, you read it right. June.

So, what is the new series?

I’m going back to my roots: fantasy romance with a fairy tale twist.

My most popular books, the ones everyone loves to read and I love to write are the Tales of the Black Court so I’m diving back into Underhill and all the dark twisty fairy tales and dark twisty characters. And guess what? It’s going great! I’m loving these stories. I have the prequel rough draft already finished and I’m bursting with ideas for the next five books. I’m writing faster than ever and, better than that, I’m enjoying it.

And do you know what that means?

If I’m loving these stories, you will too!

So get ready for more twisted fairy tales with dark heroes and strong heroines. Get ready for bloodthirsty evil queens and magic and brand new fairy godmothers with a twist. And of course, romance. Did I mention romance? Fabulous fantasy romance with fast paced fairy tale happily ever afters because, after all, that’s what you and I both love…to read, and to write.

Happy New Year! Let’s Get Organized!

Fantastic Fridays

a blog for the new year

It’s 2018 and that time of year again, the time when we authors get motivated and decide what the year will look like. If we manage to stick to our goals.

I love goal setting. I love thinking of all the possibilities for the New Year, and the next few months. I love looking ahead and dreaming of what’s coming up. But this year I’m only posting one goal:

Simplify.

What does that mean?

Well, it means that I’m trying to slim down everything in my life so that I can focus on what’s truly important.

Here’s how it works:

I’m going to write more, and hopefully publish more. If I focus on just that one thing as a priority, I believe it will change my entire way of working. So, my goals for 2018 are simple.

  1. write more
  2. stay focused on the writing
  3. write

And that’s it.

No, that’s not true!

You guessed it! I have a whole bunch of goals on my Jessica Aspen Write’s goal list, but they all support this one goal. Write.

So, I hope you’ll forgive me if I forget to post here, send out newsletters, jump on to Facebook, or anything else that isn’t writing more books, because 2018 is all about producing new words. And I’m super excited about it!

Dog_Derek Finch_Flickr

Derek Finch, Flickr, CC

What kind of goals to you have for 2018? Do you choose one big goal, or do you have a ton of tiny goals? Would simplifying your goals work for you? Why or why not?

Take care, and have a safe and happy New Year!
