Lessons from the Writing Path

Moonday Mania

a blog about writing, writers, and um, well, not writing

Whether it’s the big American novel or writing paranormal romance or blogging, writing is a journey of self discovery.

I’ve been a writer for, what seems like, all of my life. But I only got serious about it in 2008. That’s when I buckled down and said I was finishing a book. Any book. And that book turned out to be THE DARK HUNTSMAN. I had no idea that it would lead me to continue writing twisted fairy tale romance for the next few years, or that it would lead to a five book series. But here I am, writing book number four in the TALES OF THE BLACK COURT, and knowing book number five is not that far away.

So, what have I learned on this writing journey?

  1. As soon as I think I’m on a writing roll, life will intervene.
  2. The plot can be thought out in advance, but the characters are bound to have issues with whatever you’ve decided. So be flexible and roll with it.
  3. There is no such thing as the muse.
  4. There is such a thing as resistance.
  5. Writing is a muscle. Use it, or lose it.

Turns out it’s so much, I need to divide it into multiple blogs, so today I’m addressing the first of five things I’ve learned on my writing path:

  1. As soon as I think I’m on a writing roll, life will intervene.

I can decide to write. I can have the time and get started and the words are flowing out from my frantically typing fingers at a terrific rate, daily. But, if I decide that this means I can hit multiple deadlines…I get screwed. Life shows up and steals my time and suddenly that deadline is looming and my writing squeals to a STOP!!!

https://www.flickr.com/photos/84388958@N03/7729300102/in/photolist-cM1FCS-dVCQB9-fekqPf-fnCBmJ-dm9hSQ-dc7cwR-fe67oX-dTVms3-fekr2d-fnor2P

So, what to do?

I still need deadlines. They motivate me in a way that nothing else does. Call it fear motivation. Fear of disappointing my readers, my editor, myself. So I still set them. And I still beat myself up when I miss them, even if it’s due to someone else’s life falling apart and me riding to the rescue. Or vacation needing three weeks to catch up at the day job, instead of the one week I planned. Or whatever.

Deadlines work. What doesn’t work is panicking and sitting on the couch eating ice cream when I miss one. So, back to the keyboard we go. Every time life rears up it’s head to say, sorry—no hitting your deadline for you! I fight back. I keep trying. I move the deadline, or move projects, or call up whomever it is that I made that deadline-promise to and apologize profusely while begging for a few more weeks.

Is it ideal? No. Of course not. ‘snort’ Ideal would be for everyone else’s life to leave my deadlines alone. For me to never get sick. For my day job to never have it’s ups and downs. Ideal would be if I could predict when those things are going to happen and adjust the deadlines before they come due. Preferably, before even setting the deadlines.

But life happens.

So…

I keep setting deadlines. Because if I don’t, nothing happens. No writing gets done, no books get published. And I want all of that to happen.

How about you? What do you do when you set deadlines and life rears it’s ugly head and attacks? Do you give in and wallow in your failures? Or do you regroup, set new deadlines, and get to work?

Want to see what else I’ve learned on this romance writing journey? I’ll be writing about the rest of the things I’ve learned on my writing path over the next few blogs, so check back next week and find out how I wrangle plotting vs characters.

Just one of those no good very bad terrible days

Moonday Mania

a blog for the ACK! no good very bad terrible day

Have you ever had one of those days?

The kind that started off wrong from the very begining and then went down hill on wheels? Or maybe, it started off decievingly fine, and then the rampent one-after-another problems started. That was my weekend. I thought I had it all under control. I thought I had the ability to spend a lovely sunny weekend heading to my neighbors for an all-street neighborhood ice cream party and then relaxing with my family.

But no. Life was waiting to ambush me.

I returned home and decided to send out the prizes from my latest newsletter campaign and what do you know? I found out that the brand new, took me an hour to set up, email addy was screwed up. This is the one that was supposed to save my butt from getting my own email domain name and paying out big bucks. But it wasn’t working.

All the people who, instead of sending their emails to my regular address and had hit reply to my newsletter, were hanging in limbo. Not only that, it asked them to open an account, and that was super confusing. So, I spent Saturday afternoon moving my website to a paid location and trying to get a new email addy with my own name on it. Grrr.

jessica aspenNot only was this not what I wanted to do, but it was super stressful. I don’t like filling in those forms on a good day, but when I have to make all kinds of decisions about things I really don’t understand, and create multiple passwords, it becomes a no-good, very bad, terrible kind of day.

Damn the auto-fil!

I kept making errors. And the auto-fil didn’t help. You see, I have two names, and I do bills for my folks, so sometimes that auto-fill puts the wrong info in the boxes. And I correct it. Then something is wrong, the page resets and the auto-fill changes everything. Grr.

Anyway, that was Saturday and I went to bed totally stressed. Sunday I started off stressed, but Sunday the karma was much better and everything was running smoothly. My website made the shift over to the new service provider without a hitch and I set up the new email. Almost. It’s still doing something where it figures out where everything is, so it’s still not recieving any emails, but I’m confident that will fix itself.

So confident I took my free time to write this blog!

Hope you all had a better weekend than I did and you are having a fabulous start to summer!

Cheers,

Jessica

When the Writing Gets Fun, the Writing Gets Easier!

Moonday Mania

a blog about writing romance

In the news:

Silver : A Sexy Shifter Fairytale Romance, released on all channels on April 15th. WOOT! Otherwise all I’m doing right now is writing!

Now here’s the blog:

I always cringe when I see the question: What’s your favorite part of writing . Or the reverse: What do you dislike about writing? The reason I cringe is because I struggle with all the pieces of writing, whether it’s fantasy romance, shifter romance, or paranormal suspense. And yet, I still love all the pieces of writing every single one of those sub-genres. Go figure!

Romance Writing and I have a love/hate relationship.

I’m the same way about getting into the pool. I don’t want to get wet! And yet, when I get into the water, I don’t want to get out. When I’m writing I don’t want to sit down and dive into my romances. I’ll find any excuse not to do it. And I have lots of legitimate excuses. But once I get started, I realize, it’s not so bad. In fact, it’s fun!

I’m really enjoying writing book 4 of the TALES OF THE BLACK COURT.

tales of the black court a fantasy romance collection books 1-3I’ve been away from this series, and writing fantasy romance in particular, for far too long. I hadn’t planned on taking so long to get the SEXY SHIFTER FAIRYTALE ROMANCES out, but life happened and it took six months longer than I’d planned. Ooops! I thought I’d be writing this book, Siobhan’s story, in November. Sigh. (You can read about my big epiphany that I’m not a super hero HERE.)

So, by the time I got to the point where I had to sit at my computer and type real words, I was feeling very anxious about getting into the water again. It had been a long time. What if I couldn’t swim?

Surprise!

Writing this book is amazing. 🙂

I’m truly having fun diving back into my world of elves and witches and magical romances. Yes, I still have that moment of “I don’t wanna!” But once I start writing it’s going super smoothly and I love the story. I think what’s making this fantasy romance more fun than the last is that I’ve had a lot of time to think about what’s going to happen, so the words pour out. I don’t know everything, but I have a good plot. I knew the beginning and the ending and I’ve had some nice surprises from my characters along the way.

Score!

I’m so excited about it that I’m ready to order a cover and get the book out on pre-order, so be looking for that announcement, if not here then definitely in the newsletter.

So, what makes writing fun? Having a roadmap, knowing where you’re going, and deviating when you see a nice place to picnic.

Hope you are all having fun this spring, getting outside into the lovely weather (when you have it), taking spring breaks, and reading lots and lots of fun fantasy romance! WOOT!

Musing on Writing

Moonday Mania

a blog about writing

A little business before I get down to the blog business:

If you are a member of my newsletter and see the hot new cover for Rogue Enforcer, my elusive paranormal suspense shifter romance for new subscribers, don’t fret. I’ll be sending it out to current subscribers on April 1st. Due to the logistics of launching Scarlett I had to wait, but I didn’t forget you!

Scarlett: A Sexy Shifter Fairytale Romance by Jessica AspenAnd speaking of Scarlett, if you haven’t had a chance to buy your copy yet, there’s still time! You can find all the buy links HERE as well as the description. I was able to make this one available on all the channels so you can buy it today on: Ibooks Barnes & Noble Kobo and Amazon.

 WOOT!

Okay, now that that’s done, on to the blog!

Writing is a funny thing for me. I have this love hate relationship with each and every stage. Whichever one I have to start, that’s the one I’m reluctant to move into. For instance. I’m finally done with the edits etc for all the Sexy Shifter Fairytale Romances. Phew! That took forever! Not just because the project was way bigger than I thought it was going to be, but also because my body pooped out on me. Yeah, that’s right. I’m not Super  Woman. Not even Wonder Woman. Major bummer, I know.

But, they’re finally finished and I’m working on Book Four in the Tales of the Black Court. Now I started fiddling with the plot for this book way back in January between edits and other nit picky jobs I had to do, but I really haven’t started the writing yet. I’m ready to start. Really I am.

But…there’s so many other things I could be doing. Right?

Wrong!

I need to be writing. I’m ready to be writing. The plot is there, the characters are there, and I’m super excited to get to the whole thing. I’m really super excited to be finished. But what I’m not super excited to be doing is actually writing the damn romance!

I love the writing. I hate the writing. But what’s really tough is moving into starting the writing. Or the edits. Or the production. Each stage has me dragging my feet, until I’m in it. And then the romance starts for me. After I’m in the grove and the story is forming all those twisty tendrils of plot intertwining together, after the words start coming 500… 1,000…3,000 at a time. After I finally figure out what motivates my alpha heroes and what is going to make my heroine ticked off. Then I love the writing.

And then it ends.

And then I have to fight myself to start the next stage. Tearing it all apart and editing it. Grr. Why does the writing have to start? Why does it ever have to end?

So now you know. I’m officially insane. But I think all authors are. We get so immersed in our worlds, we don’t want to set foot there. And then we’re there, and we never want to leave. I’m the same way about getting into the ocean. No, don’t make me get in. NO! Don’t make me leave!

I’d love to hear what your favorite books of mine are. I’m at a crossroads and trying to decide what comes after Six Sexy Shifter Fairytale Romances, and Five Tales of the Black Court. Should I keep one series going? Should I start something else? I’m looking forward at that ocean and I’m not sure if I’m ready to dip a toe in, so help me out. Please?

Leave a comment and let me know your opinion.

Acceptance

Moonday Mania

a blog for the monday in all of us

***

Before I get to the blog: the Rafflecopter contest for a Kindle Fire 6 will be closing soon, so check out last weeks announcement of CINDER: A Sexy Shifter Fairytale Romance release and enter to win.

Now, here’s the blog.

What is an author?

Lately I’ve been struggling with what being an author means. It seems to make a living in this new ebook world of ours you need to be the kind of person who gives up sleep, social life, a clean house, all in order to produce enough work to keep the hungry readers happy and satisfied. But then, just when you think you’re doing that, life happens, and you can’t possibly write enough. So what does this mean to me as an author? If I can’t produce a book a month (and let’s face it, I can’t) can I really expect to survive in this frenzied ebook world?

Write fast? Write clean? Write dirty.

I have choices. I could skip the edits….

No, I can’t.

I’m just not that person. If you know me at all you know I have to go over those books and make sure they’re as clean as I can get them. Even the dirty parts. LOL ! I personally can’t just write a draft and send it out. I need to let it sit and then edit it, and then send it to my editor. Who then helps me figure out all the re-writes it needs. And then it goes to a proofreader. So, no, I can’t just whip out a book and get it out.

So, the question becomes…

Do I write short? Do I change what I write?

I could write serials. Shorten my books into little sections and dole them out. Or, I could write super short stories: more novellas. Complete romances that take place in 40k or less. Actually, I struggle writing short. I’m working on the edits for SCARLETT: A Sexy Shifter Fairytale Romance, right now. And it’s going to be a short novel, not a novella. Why? Because the story demands it and it’s sneaking up over 40k. I’ve given up keeping it to a novella length because I don’t want to cut out anything, especially the hotter scenes (waggles eyebrows).

So, I can’t write short. I can’t not edit. What can I do?

Roll over and take it.

My health demands that I sleep, get exercise, shop for and cook real healthy food. (Go kale!) My heart demands that I spend time with my family, take care of my parents, my kids, and my husband. And Miss Molly, my Lab mix, demands that I take her on walks.

Molly_021416

I’ve tried skipping some of this stuff and what happens? I get sick. My anxiety shoots to high levels. I just can’t do it all and feel good.

So…

I’m going to keep writing the books I love writing. I’m not moving to what’s “hot” or super short books. I love my convoluted fantasy books. I love the machinations of my villains and the snarkiness of a certain puca. And if I made them super short or left out parts or didn’t write them with the depth that they deserve, I think you, my readers, would be disappointed.

While you and me both would love to for me to write and get more books out faster, it’s just going to happen as fast as it happens. And frankly, this is pretty fast. When I think about the three years it took to write The Dark Huntsman, and I look at how fast I can write now, I’m super impressed. I am writing faster, and that’s a good thing.

Now if I can just get Molly to stop begging me for walks, we’ll be in good shape!

When curvy Cinderella meets a charming reluctant alpha, can he save her from a stepmother who means murder?

Cinder Vandeburg dreams getting away from her overbearing stepmother and getting a real job—one that pays. When her stepsisters are finalists in a teen modeling competition at a chic resort in the beautiful mountains of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, her step mother offers her an opportunity: prove herself a competent personal assistant and earn not only a stellar referral, but a bona-fide introduction to the movers and shakers of the modeling world. This is Cinder’s chance at freedom but as usual, her stepmother seems to find fault in everything she does—even when she sends her to seduce suspected modeling judge, Aiden Burdock.

Aiden is no modeling judge. He’s a tour guide with a pack of bachelor wolves depending on him to rustle up quality clients and keep their business afloat. But Aiden never wanted to be an alpha. He dreams of freedom and running wild in the hills. Having six…no seven…now eight wolves depending on him for leadership and jobs is more than he counted on when he fled pack expectations in Colorado. But his alpha tendencies can’t be ignored and when he sees curvy Cinder being treated as the runt of the litter, he lies and says he’s a judge to get her away from her malicious boss.

Now Aiden is faced with how to tell Cinder he’s just a working stiff, like her, and a wolf shifter to boot. As Aiden and Cinder’s fairy godmother build up her self esteem and she starts falling in love with a man of secrets, Cinder’s stepmother is determined one of her daughters will win the modeling competition. Even if it means she has to go all the way—and permanently eliminate the competition.

Writing Cinderella

Moonday Mania

a blog for the fairy tale romance lover

A funny thing happened to me this morning. I got an email from my fabulous crit partner ML Guida and it said, “I just watched Disney’s Cinderella, I think you should write a Cinderella romance.”

LOL!

ML (Mary) is one of my fellow writers in the CHAIN OF LOVE: Curvy Women and the Men Who Chain Their Hearts writing experiment, and even though she didn’t get a chance to read or critique CINDER: A Sexy Shifter Fairytale Romance, she’s been looking at my cover and reading my blurbs and listening to me talk about fairy god mothers and glass slippers for the last three months. So how come she didn’t know it was a Cinderella story?

Good question.

Cinder-logo-1600x2400So, it got me to wondering: what I was missing. The book cover doesn’t scream Cinderella. It does say sexy romance, and it does say wolf shifter romance, but there are no glass slippers, no pumpkins, and no chubby fairy godmother’s with sparkly wands.

Okay, so what about the blurb? Does that say Cinderella?

When curvy Cinderella meets a charming reluctant alpha, can he save her from a step mother who means murder?

Cinder Vandeburg dreams getting away from her overbearing step mother and getting a real job—one that pays.

As Aiden and Cinder’s fairy godmother build up her self esteem and she starts falling in love with a man of secrets.

Yes, I think so. Not only does it say she’s a curvy Cinderella, it says there’s an evil stepmother, stepsisters, and a fairy godmother, and while Aiden isn’t exactly portrayed as Prince Charming, I do say “charming reluctant alpha” in the tagline.

So how did she miss it?

Well, I don’t think she did.

I think that she was actually thinking about the TALES OF THE BLACK COURT, because I haven’t done a Cinderella story there. I’ve done Snow White in both series, and I’ve done Beauty and the Beast and The Frog Prince in TALES OF THE BLACK COURT, but I haven’t done Cinderella.

Why not? And why did I wait until book six of the SEXY SHIFTER FAIRYTALE ROMANCES to do Cinderella. Why not do it first?

Because it’s so hard! Or I thought it would be. I tried for a year before I wrote Cinder to figure out Aiden’s story. I’d already written him in Snow, he’s the alpha of Seth’s new bachelor pack, and I knew he needed his own story, but I seriously was going to do a Beauty and the Beast story because Cinderella was just not flowing.

But then I had the opportunity to write the curvy romance, and suddenly, Cinder’s tale was in my head, and writing it was one of the easiest twisted fairy tales I’ve ever written. Leticia Du Monde, her sassy, sexy, plus-size fairy godmother of the modeling world, nearly wrote herself, and Cinder’s stepmother and stepsisters sprang to life without any trouble at all. I just knew how the story would go.

And when that happens, it’s magic.

It’s like the first book in the TALES OF THE BLACK COURT. Writing THE DARK HUNTSMAN wasn’t easy, but that’s because it was my first complete long novel and I needed to learn a lot about writing, but the story? Easy. Same thing with RED. I wrote the first draft in three weeks. Love it!

So, when a Cinderella romance that works in the fantasy romance world of TALES OF THE BLACK COURT comes to mind, I’ll write it. Meanwhile, I’ve had the Snow Queen story percolating for nearly four years in the back of my mind, long before Frozen or the new Snow Queen movie appeared, so that’s what’s coming next. And of course, for those of you who read BROKEN MIRROR, I’ve set up Sleeping Beauty.

In the meantime, Mary, you’ll have to stick with sexy wolf shifters and Cinderella romance. I loved writing it and I think it’s my favorite to date. I hope it’s yours too. At least until the next book comes out!

Meanwhile you can still pre-order Cinder and all of the Chain of Love books for 99 cents each on Amazon. Click HERE for a list of books and links.

Do you want a Cinderella tale for the TALES OF THE BLACK COURT? What about some of the other fairy tales I’ve not written at all, like Rapunzel? Now that’s a fairytale with some deep ideas in it. Would you like Repunzel? What other fairytales do you love?
