Queen of Thorns Cover Reveal

Thursdays Bite

a fantasy romance blog

It’s here! Book Five in my fantasy romance series, Tales of the Black Court, finally has a cover. SQUEE! And isn’t it hot! My fabulous cover artist, Viola Estrella of Estrella Cover Designs has done it again. I love the way she’s stayed with the essence of the entire series, and yet this cover is something new and different. It totally says ‘fantasy romance’ to me. And I’m especially thrilled because this book is the last one in this series arc, so it’s great to end this story line about the evil Black Queen on such a super high note. I hope you love it as much as I do.

Presenting:

Queen of Thorns: A Fantasy Romance of the Black Court. Book Five, Tales of the Black Court.

QueenOfThorns-600x900

When Thorn discovers her greatest secret will the man she’s fallen in love with turn on her? Or will he give up his life to protect her?

Ardan is on a quest: return to Prince Kian’s court with the head of the Black Queen—or lose everything. Including his life. But finding the elusive faery queen is proving difficult. And time is running out.

When Aeval wakes up the only thing she remembers is her name. But soon she realizes that even a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. So she becomes Thorn instead, setting off with the man who accidentally kisses her awake on a quest to find and kill the Black Queen.

As Ardan and Thorn travel through the magical lands of Underhill and learn to trust each other, it becomes more and more obvious to Thorn that she and the queen might share more than just a name.

When Ardan finds out that Thorn might be the queen he’s sworn to slay, will he kill the woman he’s starting to fall in love with? Or will Thorn take up the mantle of dark power and again become the Queen of the Black Court?

The Slow Burn

Moonday Mania

a blog for struggling romance writers everywhere

Launched book 12 today (book 4 in my fantasy series, The Winter Queen’s Dragon). Romance, and in particular fantasy romance, is competitive so this time I tried to do all the launch strategies I could. I so want this one to jump on day one! To be number one on that fantasy romance list. Wouldn’t that be amazing? But, I’ve designed a slow burn launch by sending my announcement to my newsletter list in three batches, and doing social media on another day. So that day one jump is not likely to happen.

The idea is to show Amazon I have consistent sales, instead of a huge bump on day one. But as I look at my  trickle of sales this morning and my finger-grapping hold on the fantasy romance AZ list, I have to keep reminding myself—this is a long tail business. So it’s back to the grindstone. The good news is my early readers seem to love it. And maybe, that’s the one thing to focus on instead of sales: pleasing the readers. If I focus on that, instead of sales and launch days, then everything is a success.

I’m reading Derek Sivers book ANYTHING YOU WANT: 40 Lessons for a New Kind of Entrepreneur . It’s this tiny book filled with lessons he learned launching CD Baby, a small business he started just to sell his own CD’s and ended up selling for millions. One of the things I love about this book is that he’s so not focused on making his business a million dollar business. Instead he’s focused on how to serve his customers, who, when he started, were mostly his friends.

What is your measure of success? Are you in control of it? Is it in control of you?

Okay, that’s not a direct quote from the book, but it could have been. What it is is my take on his book. If I look at my sales and try to go for the money, I’m a total failure. It’s true. I love my books, but they barely break even. It leaves me feeling like I’m clawing and scratching just to make a living writing romance. And it feels desperate.

But, if I focus on some of the things I’ve actually achieved, I’m a success.

My readers love my books. They really do! I get letters asking me when the next fantasy romance in the Tales of the Black Court is coming out. They don’t want to wait! And my free shifter book for my newsletter subscribers, Rogue Enforcer? That inspires letters too. People want more from me. More romance. More shifters. More fantasy.

I’m getting better as a writer. This is super important. It took me two years of edits and massaging to get my first fantasy romance, The Dark Huntsman, to where it is today, but The Winter Queen’s Dragon only took months. And my editor said it was the best one yet! That’s amazing. My reviews for all my romances are at least averaging 4 stars, and usually average higher. Romance readers love my books! WOOT!

I love my life. I am making money doing something I love. Not many people can say that. Am I still struggling to get up that cliff? Yes. Do I want my job to make enough money to say it’s a living? Yes. And I’m getting there. I’ve doubled my income every year. That sounds amazing, right?

(Typically I follow that statement up with some disclaimer about what my income was the first year, but I think I need to just stick with the amazing part. I’ve only been publishing for a few years and while some others are rocking their way up the charts, most small businesses take five years to really get going. My small business is no different.)

Okay, so I’m no CD Baby. I can’t say I’m one of those romance authors who seem to appear out of nowhere and jump to the top. But I can say:

My readers love my books.

I’m getting better as a writer.

I love my life.

All of those are fabulous measures of success. And so what if the money is slow? That’s okay. I’m doubling my income every year, right? 😉

So I’ll get there. One book at a time.

Somewhere with magic—Underhill.

As the evil dragon Monoleeath attacks, Zianth charges Doyle with protecting one of the last queen eggs. Doyle is faced with the ultimate test of his loyalty…

Creating Dragons

Thursday’s Bite

A blog for the fantasy romance lover in all of us

I’m only a few months away from releasing book four in the Tales of the Black Court, THE WINTER QUEEN’S DRAGON and I’m getting super excited! It’s been months of elves and witches and evil queens. And of course…dragons.

the winter queen's dragon a fantasy romance by jessica aspen

Every time I write a book set in the world of Underhill I get to play with magical creatures, and while I mentioned the dragon in PRINCE BY BLOOD AND BONE, you actually get to meet him here. And it turns out he’s not just any dragon, he has a complex backstory with lots of dragon details. And I had to come up with all of them.

How long does it take a dragon egg to incubate? How long to become a mature dragon? How old is a young adult dragon and how old is an esteemed elder dragon? How many teeth do they have? How many types of dragons are they and how can I make them unique from everyone else’s dragons, and yet still be dragons that readers will enjoy?

And then of course, this is fantasy romance. There are all kinds of decisions regarding my hero. He’s a shapeshifter, so can he do it at will? Are there things he has to consider? How Gifted is he magically? Doyle Atavantador, the hero of THE WINTER QUEEN’S DRAGON, is  a dragon first and foremost, so I want him to be powerful, but even a dragon needs some kryptonite.

And once again, this is a fantasy romance. So, how do you balance a huge dragon with two sharp rows of teeth and scales and claws, with a man who needs to be sexy? And a heroine who needs to be in awe of a dragon, yet fall in love with the hero?

Well I can’t wait for you to discover all of the details. How Doyle and Siobhan meet. How scary he is. How sexy and amazing she finds him to be. And how he meets his kryptonite.

It’s coming soon, in January when I know you’ll need to find something to blast away the post holiday blues. And I can’t wait!

To become powerful enough to get her revenge, Siobhan must make an unlikely ally—the dragon’s sexy manservant, Doyle.

Squee! The Winter Queen’s Dragon Cover is here!

Thursday’s Bite

a blog for fantasy romance lovers

I am super excited to reveal the cover for Book Four in the Tales of the Black Court, my fantasy romance series. I love the new direction for my fantasy covers. It keeps so many elements from the first covers—the font, the magic, a single person—but it adds in something new: the hero!

Ever since I started publishing this series I’ve had readers ask, where are the heroes? They should be on the covers too. And for this book, I’m featuring Doyle, my sexy dragon shifter. Love writing this romance between a fae and a shifter, and I can’t wait until it’s out!

When the Writing Gets Fun, the Writing Gets Easier!

Moonday Mania

a blog about writing romance

In the news:

Silver : A Sexy Shifter Fairytale Romance, released on all channels on April 15th. WOOT! Otherwise all I’m doing right now is writing!

Now here’s the blog:

I always cringe when I see the question: What’s your favorite part of writing . Or the reverse: What do you dislike about writing? The reason I cringe is because I struggle with all the pieces of writing, whether it’s fantasy romance, shifter romance, or paranormal suspense. And yet, I still love all the pieces of writing every single one of those sub-genres. Go figure!

Romance Writing and I have a love/hate relationship.

I’m the same way about getting into the pool. I don’t want to get wet! And yet, when I get into the water, I don’t want to get out. When I’m writing I don’t want to sit down and dive into my romances. I’ll find any excuse not to do it. And I have lots of legitimate excuses. But once I get started, I realize, it’s not so bad. In fact, it’s fun!

I’m really enjoying writing book 4 of the TALES OF THE BLACK COURT.

tales of the black court a fantasy romance collection books 1-3I’ve been away from this series, and writing fantasy romance in particular, for far too long. I hadn’t planned on taking so long to get the SEXY SHIFTER FAIRYTALE ROMANCES out, but life happened and it took six months longer than I’d planned. Ooops! I thought I’d be writing this book, Siobhan’s story, in November. Sigh. (You can read about my big epiphany that I’m not a super hero HERE.)

So, by the time I got to the point where I had to sit at my computer and type real words, I was feeling very anxious about getting into the water again. It had been a long time. What if I couldn’t swim?

Surprise!

Writing this book is amazing. 🙂

I’m truly having fun diving back into my world of elves and witches and magical romances. Yes, I still have that moment of “I don’t wanna!” But once I start writing it’s going super smoothly and I love the story. I think what’s making this fantasy romance more fun than the last is that I’ve had a lot of time to think about what’s going to happen, so the words pour out. I don’t know everything, but I have a good plot. I knew the beginning and the ending and I’ve had some nice surprises from my characters along the way.

Score!

I’m so excited about it that I’m ready to order a cover and get the book out on pre-order, so be looking for that announcement, if not here then definitely in the newsletter.

So, what makes writing fun? Having a roadmap, knowing where you’re going, and deviating when you see a nice place to picnic.

Hope you are all having fun this spring, getting outside into the lovely weather (when you have it), taking spring breaks, and reading lots and lots of fun fantasy romance! WOOT!

Camp Nanowrimo Update: Tales of the Black Court #4

Thursday’s Bite

a blog for the fantasy romance fan

It’s spring! Time for baby bunnies, green grass, and romance (wink, wink). It’s also April and time for Camp Nanowrimo.

Now for those of you who know me you know I am a Nanowrimo fan. National Novel Writing Month is the time all us crazy people try to write fifty thousand brand new words on a brand new book in thirty days. It makes November particularly challenging if you live in the USA and have a week of Thanksgiving vacation and food prep for the last week of the month.

But I digress…

Because this month is actually Camp Nanowrimo wear the sun is hot and the living is easy and you can set your own goals. But I’m a crazy person, not just because I’m a romance writer, but also becasause…I’m a romance writer.

This camp Nano I am setting my goal at…FIFTY THOUSAND WORDS!!!

Okay, okay. So I’ve tried to hit 50k before in 30 days and never done it. And it’s not November. And I have a lot to do this month. But I’ve also been dying to write Book Four in the TALES OF THE BLACK COURT, and I want to write it all this month. 🙂

Now, it’s going to be around 80-90k words, so writing it in all one month when the most I’ve ever written is 32k (when I wrote Goldi) is not going to happen. But, I really think I can hit 50k. It only takes writing 1,667 words per day for 30 days.

And it’a  fun book to write. It’s full of romance, and magic, and elves, and more romance. There are super sexy scenes and scenes of adventure. Why can’t I just have fun, and write it fast?

Well, guess what? I can!

So far I have written 13,346 words in six days. SIX DAYS!!! I’m ahead. 🙂

Will the entire book be written in a month, not likely, but I should have most of it done by the end of April and then it’s an easy hop, skip and a jump to May. I won’t tell you when I think it’s going to be done, because I’m not going to jinx it. But, it’s coming. WOOT!

What are you doing this month? Are you writing away with me? Are you dreaming of summer and planning your summer reads? Planning to be on the beach? Leave a comment and let me know.
