Werewolves or Shifters? What’s In Your Romance?

Fantastic Fridays

wolves, bears, and jaguars…oh my

I’m happy to announce that I have the rights back to my first three hot paranormal romance novellas, Twisted Tales: Come Into the Woods.

In 2015 I’ll be working at re-vamping and re-branding the series. They’ll still be the hot, twisted fairy-tales they’ve always been, but with new covers, new blurbs, and possibly a new series title. I love these books. They are fun, sexy romps through the wilds of Colorado and they are chock full of romance, intrigue, and hot alpha werewolves.

Or do I mean shifters?

When I first wrote these novellas the paranormal romance readers hadn’t latched onto the shifter label as hard as they have now and I used werewolf to describe my beasts, even though my characters shift into full wolves and not scary Boris Karloff wannabes. Grr!

But, a year or two after my books became published it became clear to me that the romance community had issues with the word werewolf. They saw it as the half-man, half-beast from the horror movies. And, if I were writing a paranormal with a scary half-man, half-beast, it would still work. But I’m not. I’m writing about sexy shifters who become full fledged amazing animals. Wolves and bears, and maybe I’ll be venturing into jaguars. (I’ll have to tell you about the super sexy Latin lover I just met. Mmmm.)

Sorry, got distracted. Back on topic…

Now that I’m re-vamping these books I have to consider several issues.

Are they dated? Do they need new edits? And what sort of changes should I make?

I don’t think they’re dated, but I will definitely read through to make sure I don’t have any glaring issues with technology. One of the things I find funny about watching old movies is how fast we’ve changed in our technology. Just look at how the shape and size of the cell phone has changed. From a bulky thing wired into your car, to a huge rectangle, to something so tiny you could easily hide it in a bra, now back to larger bulky rectangles. Who would have predicted they’d get bigger and not smaller?

As for new edits: I think I had pretty decent editing from my previous publisher, but I know my writing has changed and grown. When I re-read through them I think it will be very hard not to tweak my own words and style. I have to decide if I should or not. Would you? If you had the chance to re-write something like that would you take the time? Or would you let it stand as it is. Many e-books are voraciously re-written, even without republication, but that’s not true of classic print novels. Should we re-write?

Back to the question.

So that leads me to the werewolf vs shifter thing. I think, given the current climate of the paranormal romance world, I’m going to seriously consider changing werewolves to wolf shifters. And werebears to bear shifters. I never liked the word werebear anyway. It’s awkward to say. And those aren’t total re-writes, merely a twitch to a wrinkled skirt.

So…

What’s your opinion? Are you a sexy shifter reader? Do you care if it says sexy werewolves? Or do you think horror movie heroes and scary villains instead of hot, hunky, alpha wolves?

Moonday Mania

a holiday post

Hi all, it’s Memorial Day here in the states. It is a serious holiday and for my friends with family in the military I’m definitely thinking of you. Most of us play outside and picnic, but those people up in New York with three feet of snow may have to change their plans. Luckily I’m in sunny Colorado and taking today off from blogging here, but you can find me today and Wednesday at my fellow CRW author Karen Docter’s blog HERE (yes, that is not a typo, that’s really how she spells her name).

Come on by and leave a comment to win a free copy of either one of my first two novellas, Snow and the Seventh Wolf or Little Red Riding Wolf. Winner’s choice!

Leaving you today with some fun writing music. Love those alpha men with angst!

Goldilocks Cometh

Thursday’s Bite

a paranormal Blog

I’ve sent the third book and possibly final novella in my Twisted Tales: Come Into the Woods series off to Passion in Print. Last year as my edits approached for Little Red Riding Wolf, I found myself unable to commit to starting a large new project. I thought about writing the sequel to Little Red, but I wasn’t sure of my direction. Should I write about Red’s brother, the erstwhile villain in Little Red Riding Wolf (next time I pick long titles, someone stop me)? Seth has depth. He’s a good older brother, watching out for his little sister and at the same time there’s something dark and tortured about his soul.

It was definitely an interesting idea. The prodigal brother finds love. Hmm, maybe. Or should I focus on the other brothers. The ones you never see in Little Red Riding Wolf, but you know exist. They are all blank slates waiting for stories. And there are so many fairy tales to chose from. Any one of the werewolf brothers could twist his own tale. While Seth’s story intrigued me it wasn’t the one I started last year.

I played with the idea of setting another story in the small town of Radon? Create a new hero or heroine. Someone to play a modern werewolf Belle or Cinderella or even Ariel. The possibilities are endless. I’ve found that I could, if I so chose, write the same fairy tale over and over. Twisting it in a different way each time so that each plot, each heroine and hero have their own setting and story.

In the end I started two stories. Seth’s, now Snow and the Seventh Wolf and Goldilocks, and Goldi and the Bear. So look out Radon, I’ve created a storm that’s brewing nearby. Close enough to cause trouble for the wolves, but with a distinct bear flavor. I’m not giving up the wolves, nor am I leaving Radon too far behind, but Goldilocks calls. And bear shapeshifters present a whole new idea. Hmm. How many bears were there? Now that’s a romance.

As much as I love shapeshifter romance and twisted fairy tales. As much as I love the way my paranormal romances have turned out, I’m working on some new ideas right now and all my twisted shapeshifter romances will have to wait until my current muse is satisfied. While I’m putting my Radon stories on the backburner, I’m up for suggestions on which fairytale to twist next for the series and I need title. It’s tough to keep the original title and the shapeshifter theme going, so I’m calling on you to use your imagination and give me some suggestions. When I’m ready to write I’ll have a whole slew of ideas ready to go, so let me have ’em!

January 17 I have a guest post at Little Read Riding Hood http://littlereadridinghood.com

Hope you swing on by and say “HI” and enter to win a free copy of Little Red Riding Wolf at every stop. There is almost no excuse for not having read it now!

On to the blog:

Little Red Riding Wolf takes place in the small town of Radon, Colorado. A place where everyone is a werewolf. Now I know that recently there has been some argument that werewolves are the scary ugly half man half wolf creatures from the old horror movies, but I didn’t go with that. I went with the more mystical person changing into a full wolf. Some people call those shifters. For some, a shifter can shift into any type of animal. For instance in Charlaine Harris‘s Sookie Stackhouse Series she uses shifters as a separate species from werewolves and yet her werewolves are actually wolves.

Then there is the term lycan made famous in the action horror films The Underworld series. Lycan is derived from the term lycanthrope, another name for the werewolf. In the Underworld the lycan’s are half man half wolf and face off against the vampires. I didn’t want to make my characters that dark. I love the idea of transforming into a wolf and running wild under the night, not being a twisted contorted concoction of man and beast. My wolves are beautiful and they know it.

Underworld Movie Trailer

As I said, Radon is populated entirely with werewolves. Poor Evan Brewster is assigned there when his predecessor is killed unexpectedly. Typically, the Radon Pack Council would have made sure there was a replacement ready to step into the empty Forest Ranger position, but with the “unexpectedly” part, no one was ready and Evan shows up. Needless to say, the folks in Radon are less than welcoming. Small towns are tough enough places when you are an outsider, you can imagine what it would be like to be an outsider in a town of werewolves all trying to keep their existence secret.

From the cold reception at the gas station to getting shot at, Evan does not have it easy. The only bright spot in his world is when Red  shows up unexpectedly while he’s on patrol in the middle of the woods. Evan is young and lonely and the sassy sexy single gal who can out-hike him is more enticing than anything in town. No wonder he chases her up the mountain and confronts her in her Grandma’s cabin.

little red riding wolf tour buttonI’ve made my mind up for this series, but there are always more on the way and brand new series give me more leeway to play with words, terms, and phrases. I’d love to know if you prefer the term shifter or werewolf or lycan, leave a comment and let me know your preference.

Holiday Gifts of Love Blog Hop

Holiday Gifts of Love Blog Hop

The best gift for the holiday’s is love, and luckily since I write romance I get to gift myself and my readers with love, love, love. All my Twisted Tales: Come Into the Woods spicy fairy tales are set in the Rocky Mountains, so it’s love in the Rockies this holiday season, and all year round.

Winter at high altitude is a special time. The snapping cold in your lungs, the scents of spruce, pine, and fir trees, all make it seem like Christmas as soon as you step outside. And inside there’s no better place to be with your sweetie, than curled up in front of a real wood fire, roasting popcorn, drinking hot chocolate, and listening to music to get you in the mood.

Personally I love to bake, so I’m including a special cookie recipe for you to enjoy this holiday season from my favorite cookbook The Hershey’s 1934 Cookbook. My mom had this and we loved to bake from it when I was a little girl. Now I have my own copy and make the same recipes with my girls.

Chocolate Walnut Wheels

  • 2 squares (2 oz.) Hershey’s Unsweetened Baking Chocolatehershey's 1934 cookbook
  • 1/3 cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 tsp. Vanilla Extract
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour or 2/3 cup cake flour
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 cup finely chopped walnuts
  • Walnut halves

Heat oven to 350° F. Lightly grease cookie sheet. In top of a double boiler over hot, not boiling, water melt chocolate. Set aside to cool slightly. In large mixer bowl, beat butter and sugar until well blended. Add chocolate, egg and vanilla; beat well. Add flour and salt; beat until blended Stir in chopped walnuts. Drop by heaping teaspoonfuls onto prepared cookie sheet. Place walnut half in center of each. Bake 10-12 minutes or until set. Remove from cookie sheet to wire rack. Cool completely. yield about 2 dozen cookies.

Warmth, family, cookies and your sweetie to unwrap at the end of the day. That’s the way I would love to set my romantic holidays for my readers and myself. Unfortunately my characters don’t get that in my books. No sweet snuggling, no gifts to unwrap, no kisses under the mistletoe.

Why?

Because they are usually dealing with a crisis.

Now I know none of you have crises during your holidays. Human holidays are relaxed and comfortable, full of turkey, ham and pie. But my werewolves have issues, and they don’t get to be relaxed. Take Red, my werewolf heroine in Little Red Riding Wolf. Now her story takes place in the fall, so by Christmas she should be settled down with her human husband, Evan, working on that baby. But I think this Christmas she’s going to be worried about her brother Seth.

Seth made lots of trouble for Red and Evan in Little Red Riding Wolf, and she knows he’s due for some trouble of his own. And I think she’s right. That’s why Seth will be spending this winter falling in love with his own human, and hating every minute of it. Because Seth doesn’t think humans and weres should mate.

Snow and the Seventh Wolf by Jessica AspenPoor Seth isn’t due for a relaxing winter holiday.

And his love interest has an even tougher holiday in store. You see Snow is living with an evil step-mother, and when her step-mother and step-father propose a vacation in the gorgeous area of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, sweet family holidays are not in store.

Not for Snow, who will be running for her life. Not for her step-father, who fails to kill her the first time. And not for her step-mother, who really needs all the money from Snow’s inheritance, not just the pittance she’s already spent.

So we’ll have to wait to let Seth and Snow enjoy their winter holiday, at least until February. In the meantime, you can curl up in front of the fire with Red’s story. Little Red Riding Wolf is available now at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, All Romance and Passion in Print Press.

Click HERE to read an excerpt of Little Red Riding Wolf. Warning, must be over 18, its hot!

Snow and the Seventh Wolf, Seth’s story, will be available February 1st, just in time for a romantic ending around Valentine’s day.
