You can read my blog and answer the question at the end  and ENTER TO WIN an e-copy of GHOSTS OF CHRISTMAS PAST, the first book in my HAUNTED HOLIDAYS  series.

Brrr! Winter in New England. That’s where I set GHOSTS OF CHRISTMAS PAST. And, in fact, the next five stories are going to also be in the fictional town of Applesett, Mass. Why? Because for me, living in Colorado, New England is full of romance. I love the idea of deep forests and snowy hills. Sleigh rides and snow.

Yes, we have snow here. Of course we do! It’s Colorado. But you really have to drive into the mountains to have a real sleigh ride with horse drawn carriages and all the trimmings. Applesett is a small town, rural, with lots of twisting dirt roads and open fields and places to take your sweetie. Not that Nate and Jen get much time for that! They’re busy fighting off a ghost and falling in love.

But, if you read the book, Jen does have a past where sleigh rides are in order. Or does she? Jen dreams about a time a hundred years ago and another couple in love during the winter. You’ll have to read the book and decide if it’s really Jen’s karmic past, or the ghost making Jen believe it’s her past.

Either way, romance is in the air. In the past, in a horse drawn sleigh, or in the present, where Jen and Nate discover the charms of the town of Applesett and start to fall in love.

Do you find snow romantic? To  ENTER TO WIN an e-copy of GHOSTS OF CHRISTMAS PAST, the first book in my HAUNTED HOLIDAYS  series, answer the question: what’s your form of romance in the snow? Sleigh rides? Skiiing? Hot drinks by the fire? Just let me know and I’ll enter you in the drawing.

And don’t for get to hop over to Hops With Heart and the other amazing authors contests as well as the grand prize!

The Butterfly Connection by Sandra S Kerns

BC Cover 1900x2850 (1)Murder, encryption, and corporate espionage bring two strangers together to break codes and years of silence to solve a very personal case.

Wanted for the murder of her stepbrother, Emma Simms is on the run. She has to convince her brother’s reclusive partner in the FBI to help her find the real killer. If she can’t, she’ll end up in prison for killing the one person who ever believed in her. Her car breaks down just short of her goal and then a car tries to run her over. If not for the blaring of a driver’s horn, she’d be dead before she even gets a chance to talk to Artemis Jones.

The minute he pulls to the side of the road Artemis knows he’s in trouble. The woman is obviously out of her element. If he didn’t miss his guess, the car he scared off was aiming to run her down. He doesn’t need the trouble of helping a woman in distress, but he can’t turn his back on someone in need. It doesn’t take long to learn she’s not so much in distress as spitting mad and loaded for bear. Unfortunately, the bear she’s hunting is him.

Can the two of them put aside their distrust of others and themselves long enough to find the real murderer? Can the passion they discover survive the truths they find along the way?

Enter Jim Landers, the ideal candidate. An accidental encounter introduces her to the tall, dark attorney who loves soccer and kids. The only problem? Jim turns to the flawless yet distant Donna as a substitute for Rachel.

She should show him how much he means to her, but rejection from an absent father and a capricious ex-husband may have ruined Rachel’s ability to connect to Jim. Will she risk herself, her son and their future by revealing how much Jim means to her?

A touching, tender tale full of gentle humor, about thinking too much and feeling too little. Rachel must learn to be heart-strong in order to find her soul mate.

Ghosts of Christmas Past

excerpt: chapter one

Jen turned, gazing over the bare winter fields to the tangle of trees. No explanations, no obligations, no complications. For two whole weeks she could just hide here, and write.

The first genuine smile she could remember since April spread her face wide.

Then the pickup arrived.

Black, large, and full of male attitude it parked right next to her vacation house, dwarfing her small car and taking up the entire drive.

“Oh, there’s Nate now.” Mrs. Castlebury waved at the man pushing an eager black Labrador back into the cab while trying to exit the vehicle.

He got the door shut, faced them, and grinned. Dressed in New England casual of laced-up work boots, jeans, and plaid shirt under a denim jacket, Nate Pierce, striding across the snow, hand out in welcome, was a commercial for settling down. Tall. Good-looking in a rugged, works-for-a-living kind of way. And he had a dog. A big, sloppy, super-cute dog, wagging its tail and drooling on the driver’s side window.

For one impulsive moment Jen wished this was her life. She loved big dogs, the country, and secretly, men in plaid shirts, but she hadn’t had the opportunity for any of it since her dad’s death. Their daddy-daughter fishing trips, where he’d gotten to get out of his suit and she’d gotten to be free of her school uniform, had stopped cold the year she’d turned twelve.

This was the first time since then she’d ventured outside of somewhere hot and warm with a very clean, very controlled hotel. Her mom’s idea of a vacation. Of course, neither her mom nor her ex, Jason, tolerated dogs of any size. And as for living outside of the Boston city limits?

Neither of them would consider the horror.

She squashed the sudden surge of loneliness and desire for something she’d probably never have, and pasted on a smile.

Mr. Good-Looking Country Boy tramped through the snow to the porch, pushed his overlong forelock of sandy brown hair off his face, and held out a hand. “Hi, I’m Nate Pierce, your landlord.”

“My what?” She shot a quick look at Mrs. Castlebury.

“Your landlord, dear. I’m just the listing agent. Nate owns the house and he’ll see to any upkeep you need.”

“In fact, I’ll be back in an hour or so after you’ve gotten settled and bring the Christmas tree.”

“The Christmas tree?” She’d forgotten. She’d purchased the Christmas in New England package because it had been cheaper than renting by the day. “That’s not necessary,” she said, her voice chillier than she’d intended.

“I’ve already cut the tree down.” Nate’s friendly grin wavered as did his hand hovering in the air between them. “It would be a shame to waste.”

She didn’t want to be friendly with the neighbors. She wanted to hide out and recuperate. Make up her mind as to what in the world she was going to do next. But good manners won out.

Jen repressed a sigh, reached out, and slid her bare hand into his. As it disappeared into his tan callused grip, her hand seemed slim and small. He squeezed gently and a tingling warmth spread across her skin.

Hot caramel sensation slid from the connection between them, up her palm, along her arm, and through her entire body. Her hand tightened automatically, and a responding spark lit in his eyes.

Jen swallowed. Shoot! She wasn’t ready for this. She was here to lick her wounds, not some guy’s abs. And given the strength in his hand and his wide shoulders, she’d bet he had some killer abs.

She gazed up into Nate’s warm chocolate brown eyes and his face blurred. For a moment she saw another face superimposed over his. Same brown eyes, same tanned, rugged New England skin, but more boyish, broad-boned and black haired.

Every hair on her scalp tried to climb out of its slicked back, ponytailed restriction.

Then her new neighbor’s sharper, more intense features came into focus. Jen panicked and jerked her hand away. Wiping her buzzing palm on her long red wool coat she backed up, nearly running into Mrs. Castlebury.

“Oh, I’m sorry. Pardon me.” She circled around, putting the older woman between herself and Nate Pierce.

What the hell just happened?

Jen tucked her hands into the safety of her coat pockets, surreptitiously rubbing her tingling right palm along the silk inside her pocket. Trying to get rid of the strange feeling spreading along her skin and telling her pounding heart that everything was fine. That something bizarre hadn’t just happened to her. And that life was safe and normal.

Ghosts of Christmas Past Sneak Peek

Nate Pierce stared at his brothers as they pulled the plug on his dreams.

“We’re done, Nate.” Atticus leaned on the old wooden desk that had been their grandfather’s. With his fingers laced together and stuck with a nose that the Pierce family had carried proudly for generations, he even looked like the old man.

If the old man had had a full head of hair.

Atticus’s fraternal twin Ethan nodded from his position propped up on the wall next to the filing cabinets. “We’re pulling out, bro.” Always active, with too much energy sparking in his blue eyes, Ethan was so wired he couldn’t even sit down to chew Nate out.  “It’s time to sell the houses and pay us back.”

Pressure drummed in Nate’s ears. He stood up fast. “What the hell?” His metal folding chair clattered to the old wooden floor of the second story office, nearly hitting his dog, who scuttled out of the way. “You can’t pull out, there’s still three years on the loan. I’ll be left with nothing.”

Looking for Haunted Reads?

Fantastic Fridays

a paranormal blog

It’s Friday! And it’s time to explore the world of ghosts. My latest foray in to the paranormal is a romantic ghost story, Ghosts of Christmas Past, and while I may have trouble deciding if it’s a modern Gothic, a romantic suspense with paranormal elements, or a New Adult paranormal romance, I do know one thing about it (besides the fact that it’s a romance): it has ghosts.

Writing ghost romance means I’m anticipating Halloween and today I decided to take a journey into the land of true ghost stories. I grew up reading tales of terror, provided through the Arrow and Scholastic book clubs. You can read that post HERE, but now I’ve discovered that it’s all on the internet. So here are a list of a few blogs you can hop to and discover ghosts, ghouls, and the truly creepy.

halloween toombstonesThe first blog I’m going to send you to is Paranormal Stories  and I particularly was intrigued by the title of one of their blogs Corpse Roads.  Gives me the shivers just reading it. Reminds me of when Mary and I drove down to RWA this summer. We drove through the vast open prairies of Colorado, Oklahoma, and Texas. And there was one town that was stuffed full of graves. Tiny little town and multiple cemetaries. We figured people had driven for miles through rural Texas to be buried there. All those corpses rolling over the three roads that came into town. Now that place must have some ghost stories.

Since my story is a modern Gothic, I set it in a haunted house in the US. So if you are looking for more stories of haunts in the United States, then check out American Ghost Story. Tales of the supernatural from all over the states. What I find interesting about this blog is that it’s full of short, almost Flash Fiction personal tales of ghosts from all over. If you want quick creepy stories, this is the link for you. I loved the typo in the story about a haunted youth “hostile” in Berlin. It definitely was hostile.

And I haven’t been brave enough to listen, but if you love the sound of Neil Gaiman’s voice, like I do, merely the idea of him reading ghost stories sends shivers up my spine. Check out the TED Blog and let me know if it’s as spine chilling as I think it will be. Even the title of the story is creepy, Click-Clack the Rattlebag. Brrrr!

What’s Happening: I have guests every Wednesday on the blog, this week author Sandra S. Kerns, shared her research into diving for Her Master Diver. And next Whimsical Wedesday you will meet author Tameri Etherton.

Check out the quickie glimpses into Ghosts of Christmas Past, this month with Sneak Peek Sundays. Every Sunday I’ll be giving you six paragraphs from the book.

Next Friday I’ll go over my Fantastic Halloween! October is going to be chock full of events where you can win everything from print books to Amazon Gift Cards, so check back!

Ghosts of Christmas Past Sneak Peek

But it had been so real.

She went back through it. She’d been driving down the narrow road, heading deeper into the tangled bare branches of winter New England. She’d risked a glance at the overcast sky. Only mid-afternoon, but the heavy cloud cover and tall trees pressing in from the sides made it seem like nighttime was approaching fast.

And then, she’d looked back at the road. A woman in a long, dark dress stood dead center in the curve.

Jen screamed and turned the wheel, pushing her right foot down hard on the brake. The tires shrieked, and the car skidded, the end fishtailing around and spinning in a 360 turn.

She hung on. Trees flew by in a blur and she caught a vague impression of a frightened face.

The car slowed its spin. Her heart pounded in her throat, scratching and clawing in a race to get her somewhere, anywhere but strapped into the seat of a car she barely knew how to drive.

Ghosts of Christmas Past Sneak Peek

No footprints, no body, no woman…nor any sign there’d ever been one.

Her body shaking, Jen got out of the small rental car and looked again. Frigid air caught in her lungs and, for a moment, she suffocated on her own breath.

Then she exhaled. And it was okay. She could breathe again.

A chilly gust of wind blew snow down the empty road. She walked back a few feet and searched the unmarked snow crowded close under the dense brush and trees of the road’s shoulders, but couldn’t find anything. Unable to get warm she pulled her wool coat close around her, checking the steep ditches again, and again, making absolutely sure that there was no body, bleeding and tossed to the side. Or buried in the snow.

There wasn’t. Her expensive leather boots soaking wet, she stumbled back into the car. With numb fingers she turned on the heat, reclined the seat and closed her eyes. Took a moment, just to breathe.

There hadn’t been a woman, wide-eyed, white-skinned, and dripping with mud, standing in the middle of the slick, snow-covered road. It was just her nerves.

Being a Gothic Romance Author

Thursdays Bite

a paranormal blog

It’s early but I’m focused on fall and my mind is turning to Halloween. Ghosts and witches and haunted houses. It helps that I have a new Gothic romance out, Ghosts of Christmas PastWhat makes a Gothic romance author? What makes Gothic different from other types of paranormal romance? I blogged about Gothics and Gothic Romance a few months ago (you can check it out HERE and HERE), but today I’m thinking of the suspense element that all Gothic romance authors need in their books.

Gothic is suspense.  There might be a missing wife, a rumor of the hero being a murderer, or a smuggler. The most famous Gothic romance is Rebecca, by Daphne Du Maurier.

rebecca by daphne du maurier“Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again… I came upon it suddenly; the approach masked by the unnatural growth of a vast shrub that spread in all directions… There was Manderley, our Manderley, secretive and silent as it had always been, the gray stone shining in the moonlight of my dream, the mullioned windows reflecting the green lawns and terrace. Time could not wreck the perfect symmetry of those walls, nor the site itself, a jewel in the hollow of a hand.”

Rebecca opens slowly, but you know from the very beginning, that something dark is approaching. Look at all the words in this paragraph that hint of the dark story to come. First of all we are in a dream state, where anything can happen. Then Du Maurier uses “unnatural growth” to remind us of the danger of untamed nature. And, when we are talking about Gothics, nature implies natural desires—sex. Here, she subtly lets us know that Manderly has gone wild and the dangers of seduction are rampant. To even dream of Manderley is to take a risk.

She moves on to “secretive and silent”. There is nothing more dangerous than a secret, and of course all secrets must be kept silent. We are already anticipating, wondering what is the secret that this place holds. Why shouldn’t we visit it, even in a dream? And how dangerous can it be?

Then she backs off the dangerous sensuality of the estate, recalling it as a lovely place, a jewel with perfect symmetry. But even at the end she let’s us know by using the word “hollow” that while it is lovely, it still has a darkness about it.

If you haven’t read much Gothic, then Rebecca is the place to start. It isn’t fast paced, like my modern Gothic romance, Ghosts of Christmas Past. Nor will you find the intensity of a modern romance. The attraction between the heroine and her husband is implied. His control over her is suspect. He is rich and older and has secrets that they don’t talk about. Rebecca has a dark suspense that is reminiscent of the Victorian Era. And, even though it’s set in the 20th century we are drawn back to a past where huge estates held ghosts and darkness.

Have you read Rebecca? Or any of Daphne Du Maurier’s works? Did you know there is a contest named after her held by the Kiss of Death Mystery and Suspense chapter of Romance Writer’s of America? The Daphne Du Maurier award is a prestigious and difficult to win award for the best in mystery and suspense romance. What do you think is the best thing about the opening to Rebecca? Does it make you want to read the book?
Okay, it’s still summer, but here in Colorado it’s been cool and rainy this week. School has started, and fall flowers are out in the grocery store, so I’m thinking fall. I’m also scheduling my guests for September through November on my new Whimsical Wednesdays Guest feature (check the calendar HERE), and working on scheduling my fall events. This October I’ll be celebrating The Dark Huntsman’s birthday in October, so look for all kinds of fun then, and I’ll be guest posting all over the internet, so check back here to keep informed. Check out my NEWS page for the calendar of events and what’s coming up this season as well as updates on my progress on Broken Mirror.
