Working Up to Working Out

Moonday Mania

a blog for the new year and the new me

Happy New Year!

Yes, we’re into week two? or is it three? But who cares? It’s the New Year until we give up on it being the New Year. Sometime in week four or the first week in February when those New Year resolutions are really sinking in.

For me, that’s today, Thursday. I know you are reading this on Monday, or Tuesday, or maybe even next year, but right now it’s Thursday morning and I’m struggling to wake up because my body wants to stay in bed after working out Tuesday. And Sunday. My stomach muscles are so sore it hurts to sneeze.

Is that confusing? Okay, here’s the story.

I work out. I walk or sprint five days a week and go to the gym two to three times per week.

Sure I do. And if you believe that, then I have a werewolf in my closet I’ll be happy to show you. That schedule is in an ideal world. When I work my way up to it and I’ve been doing all of this on a daily basis, then I really do do all of that, but in reality I get sick and I slack off. Or the weather is bad, so sprinting is out of the question, unless I want to slip on the ice and end up in the hospital. So the real work out schedule tends to be:

Try to walk five days per week—maybe make it four because of work or it being too dark outside. Try to get to the gym two to three days per week—maybe make it once or twice, due to the schedule. Or, (even more likely in winter and fall) get sick and don’t go at all.

So here I sit today, the second week of January with aching stomach muscles because…I haven’t been getting to the gym since the beginning of November.

Does this sound like you? Do you set goals, but then something happens and you let yourself have a day off? And then another? I’m terrible about that when I don’t feel good or there is a holiday or I’m on vacation. All of which happened in November. And then it was December and I hadn’t been to the gym for a month and I got sick AGAIN! Any normal person would do what I did, put it off until January. December was nearly over, right? Right!

Writing is exactly like this. When I write, and I write on a daily basis, my writing  muscles are in good shape. I can sit down and knock out 2k in no time. Easy peasy. But…when I haven’t been writing my writing muscles are soft and getting them going again is tough. I sit and stare at the computer and struggle for what to write? Even though I love writing it becomes difficult, way more difficult than it needs to be.

And it’s not like I haven’t done all of this before.

I know you won’t believe it, but I have failed at going to the gym before. Really. I have had to re-start those muscles time and time again. And I keep doing it. The same with the writing. I may need a jumpstart in January. I may complain about my aching muscles and have a tough time getting going in the mornings, wishing I had never slacked off in the first place, but I still end up in this same spot.

And it’s okay. Because I am determined to get those muscles back again.

I may never have that sixpack, (I’m naturally a curvy girl) I may never be that author who can churn out a book a month, but I am determined to get back into shape, both physically and as a writer. How about you?

How are your New Year’s resolutions going? Are you writing? Swimming? Working out? How about eating more kale? Leave me a comment and let me know what you resolved to change this year and how it’s going. Are your muscles sore?

Writing Romance Goals 2015

Moonday Mania

it’s all about the goals, baby!

Hellooo! And Happy 2015!

It’s a new year, finally, and that means I get to start over. WOOT! I love starting over with new romance writing goals for the new year and 2015 is going to be simplified, clarified, and amplified.

Okay, I just threw in that last one because I liked the way it sounded.

Seriously though. My life has gotten super busy with increase responsibilities. Between helping out my parents, the kids, the husband, the day job and my new post as treasurer for my local RWA group, I’m going to be working hard to find the time to do what I love to do, and that’s WRITE ROMANCE.

But I’m determined to set my goals high, so here goes.

Here are my new goals for 2015!

  1. Publish book 2.5, Cassie’s backstory from just before Broken Mirror.
  2. Publish Broken Mirror, book three in the Tales of the Black Court.
  3. Re-brand and publish the three novellas in the Twisted Tales: Come Into the Woods series
  4. Write three more novellas for Twisted Tales Series and publish.
  5. Write fourth book in the Tales of the Black Court. (Would love to have this out and published by end of 2015, but realistically it’s looking like 2016. But I’m going to try!)
  6. Put all 6 Twisted Tales into an anthology. (This is also a bonus goal, but I think it’s doable!)

See? My theme this year is KISS (Keep It Simple Silly!)

Previous years I’ve had huge lists of goals. Romance writer and reader conferences I wanted to attend and writing classes I wanted to take. But I’ve had to really re-focus and streamline and this year I’m really focused on what I’m writing and getting my words out to you, the readers. This year it’s all about the romance, baby!

Twisted Tales is a huge focus for me because I have the rights back from my publisher and I want to get them back out into the world, but they need new covers and frankly new titles. While I love Little Red Riding Wolf, it ends up in the children’s section of the search engine, and that is not a good thing for a spicy romance novella!

I know that readers really enjoy those sexy shifter stories, so I’m planning on writing three more and putting them all into an anthology as well as make them available for sale individually.

If all goes as planned I’ll have NINE books out by the end of 2015. AMAZING!

The Tales of the Black Court are another huge focus and I can’t wait until the next one is out. Broken Mirror my biggest priority for 2015 and it is getting closer to publication every day!

That’s it!

KISS! That’s my theory and I’m sticking to it. Get the goals done one at a time and when that one’s done, move on to the next!

What are your goals for 2015? Are you using the KISS method of goal setting? Leave a comment and let me know. 🙂

Goals Check in, Nearing the end of 2014

Moonday Mania

a goal oriented blog

Whew! It’s the end of 2014 (well almost the end) and I’ve been reviewing my goals for the year. Who knew writing romance would be this tough? When I very first started in 2007 I only had one goal: finish a romance novel. Well, I did that. Then, it was publish the romance novel and write another. Well, I did that too. Now here I am at the end of my seventh year of taking writing seriously and looking at my goals for the year I realize I had no idea that I’d be here when I started.

So where am I?

Here’s the link to my goals post for 2014 and here are the goals and how I did. Red is DONE, Blue is NOT THERE YET!

Overall Goals for 2014

  1. Publish two books in Tales of the Black Court Series (Prince by Blood and Bone-end of Jan, Mirror-summer 2014) Published Prince by Blood and Bone April 2014, Wrote Broken Mirror rough draft, completed Dec. 2014-not published
  2. Publish Christmas story (First of Haunted Holiday Novellas)  (goal is Christmas in July) Published Ghosts of Christmas Past in August, 2014
  3. Publish on more formats Added in Ibooks, Barnes and Noble, Kobo and All E Romance
  4. Be making enough money by the end of 2014 to cover my writing expenses Okay, I’m not here yet. But I think with the publication of Broken Mirror in 2015 I will achieve this. Go 2015!
  5. Continue to hone marketing techniques. This is a continual work in progress, but I’m getting there!
  6. Remember balance Had to write this one in blue, as this year was a study in imbalance. But it’s December and I feel like I’m finally on my feet and maybe learning some balance. Or at least how to fake it!
  7. Work on writing on a schedule Another result of not having balance is my writing schedule got turned upside down when I changed my job schedule. But I think I’m finally getting this. If there aren’t holidays, sick days, and kids underfoot!
  8. Come up with a plan for other books/series: What is my next step? Either start writing Tales of the Winter Court, focus on Haunted Holiday novellas, or write other Shifter books I’ve gone up and down on this, but I finally have a plan…You’ll see it next Moonday in my 2015 goals.
  9. Work on writing/spending time more efficiently I really think this is almost a reflection of #s 6 and 7. So once again, it’s in progress and getting better every day.

How are your goals for the year?

Did you do everything that you said you would? Did you do any of it? Did you hit a few bumps in the road and have to re-balance your alignment? Leave me a comment and tell me what’s up with your 2014, and then it’s on to 2015!

December Check In!

Moonday Mania

a blog for the craziness of December

Hi all!

I’m now one week post Nano and finding my romance writing feet with a sick kiddo underfoot all week and catching up from me being sick for two weeks. So…this week will be a check in and next week will be the hysterically funny girls week at the spa blog I’ve been promising you.

I did write romance this week. I wrote a lot. In fact, I wrote so much that I am DONE with the rough draft for BROKEN MIRROR, my third fantasy romance. A task that has taken far too long and cost way too much in terms of lost sleep. WOOT! (Celebratory champagne all around!)

champagne by lynne kelley author

“champagne” by Lynne Kelley Author

Okay, that’s all the celebration I get, because now I have to sit down and edit the thing.

Grr. Editing. Love it and hate it.

I love it because here is where I get to see the whole book come together. All the romance. All the fun. All the revelations.  And I had some DOOZIES! Just wait. I’m so excited about the end of this book and what happens to the Black Court. And the QUEEN!

You will never believe it. It’s so amazing I can’t even hint about it, but I think…no I know…you readers are going to love it. (grin!)

And, even better, I know what the next fantasy romance in the series is about. And the book after that. WOOT!(More celebratory champagne.)

And now, back to the editing. I hate it because it means I’m not done with this book. I have to wade back in and fix all the tiny issues that cropped up while writing. Especially the ones that are bigger and caused by some of the revelations that I had while writing. So…I’m looking at how I write and how I edit, because while I love this book and want to finish it, I also want to dive into the next book.

And I’m going to try to do just that. I’m going to be editing romance and writing romance at the same time for the next few months. I’ll be living and breathing so much romance I’m going to wish I had a few extra hands. Wouldn’t that be cool? Okay, maybe that sounds like a little too much fun! Back to the real job. What this means is that I’m going to try to edit and write on different days of the week and at different times and end up with an edited book and a rough draft of the next book at about the same time.

Why would I kill myself doing this?

First of all, because I need a challenge. No, I really don’t. I’m just a sucker for pain, that’s all. Now you know my secret.

The truth is I feel behind. I wanted to have BROKEN MIRROR done and publishing now, but it’s not ready. I’m like that wine commercial. We will sell no wine before it’s time. Do you remember that one? Well, I’ll sell no romance before it’s time. And right now it’s editing time. And writing time. And, I’m sure I’m supposed to be doing something else time.

How do I plan to do all of this and still stay sane?

I’ve been going to the library during Nano and writing for 2 hours at a time. I plan to keep that up and write at least six hours a week of new material. Some of that will be brainstorming, since I don’t really have the whole plot for the next fantasy romance yet. But once I have a plot (hopefully in the next two weeks) I’ll be creating during that library time.

And that leaves me 2 hours during the day after work and before my daughter gets home. That’s prime editing time. I’ll be editing four days a week. That fifth day is for errands and family stuff. I don’t work weekends. Okay, I do, but I save weekends for blogging, accounting and football. (Oh, and that husband person, he seems to need some time too!)

That’s the plan for December. I’m going to reevaluate in January when I set my 2015 goals and review my 2014 goals. Check back in then and we’ll see how it’s going.

Do you have any last minute plans to get things done for the end of the year? How are you re-vamping your goals or schedule?

Cyber Monday: Last Day for #99cent #Romance & Last Nano Update

Moonday Mania

the last nano check in

So I’m a nano failure. Maybe. If you count writing 50,000 words in 30 days as the only way to count success. But I don’t. I count my successes differently. And my success is that I wrote more words in November than I’ve written in any month so far this year. I re-established some great writing habits. And, I re-discovered my commitment to writing.

Now that’s success!

I also am committed to trying something I’ve never been able to pull off successfully and that is: writing new words every week, even while editing. You see, I’ve usually been the type of writer to be immersed in one book. I write that book, then let it sit and maybe edit or work on something else, and then when I’m ready to edit the book I leave the other projects and dive into the edits. No writing new words because I’m all about the one book.

But, I want to be a more prolific writer. When I’m writing, and I’m in the flow, I can produce a decent amount of words per week. But then I stop writing, and getting back into that flow takes too long. What I want to have happen is I want to be able to keep that ability to write in the zone even while editing.

So that’s one of my new goals as I head into December.

Now, December is typically my month to review my goals, so I’ll be doing that very soon on the blog. This last year was a very different year for me. I went from a really difficult Fall 2013 into Winter 2014- sick and run down. I slept for the first few months, totally re-vamped my diet and lifestyle and got myself healthy over the spring. Just when I should have been writing I started a new job, that threw a wrench into my Diva writing style. And I’ve ended up here. Fed up with the Diva and ready to write.

So, top of my list of goals will be to write new words every week. Even when I’m editing the heck out of Broken Mirror, which is my other top goal. My health slid a little over November, another reason I didn’t hit my word goal. The killer cold lasted two weeks and sapped my energy. But that’s just another excuse. I’m looking forward to being healthy in December and writing as if it’s Nano again, but adding the editing in. Will I hit 50k in December?

No. I’m not planning on it. But I am planning on  increasing my word count from November. And who knows? If I do this all year I may head into next November with 50k being a possibility. Hey, I’m an optimist. It could happen!

How was your November? Did the fall weather, snow, or being sick knock you from achieving your goals? What are you going to do about it? Are you going to be the Diva and whine, whine, whine? Or are you going to pull up the big girl boots (mine are tall and black) and get moving on your goals?

Today is the last day to purchase those 8 amazing romance authors at 99 cents!

Book links, blurbs, and covers will be coming soon!

Back to the Nano front!

I’m still slogging away at Nano. Someday I WILL hit 50 thousand words in a month, but it won’t be this month. The killer cold hit last week and it’s slowed me down. I’m not sure (okay, I’m pretty sure it wasn’t happening this month) if I would have been able to hit 50k, but the good news is I’ve hit a decent word count stride, and here’s how I’m doing it.

I’m hitting the road!

Yes, I’ve had to leave my cozy writing nest with my ever flowing coffee pot and fireplace and head to the library. When I’m there I don’t even ask for the WiFi code, I just head to the quiet room and see if there is a table available and write! If I’m lucky, I can get a whole room to myself, but last week it was crazy there, I couldn’t even find a study carol that was unoccupied and I had to use a sofa and perch my laptop on my lap. (Um, they may be named laptops for that reason, but that was not the best way to write.)

And of course, last week I was hampered by coughing. There’s nothing like being in the quiet room in the library and hacking out a lung. Not only do you feel the shame of being the one to break the silence (unlike that dude who had a whole conversation on his cell-phone, despite the big sign that says NO CELL PHONE USE) but, I also knew that everyone was wondering if I carried some killer disease.

Cough, cough.

Back to the word count!

And now you see why I haven’t hit the 50k, despite the 2k per day I worked in the library. I let too much life intervene. But the good news is I’m almost at 15k, and that is a fabulous word count for a regular month. Also, I’ve figured out what is working for me to get me through this period of my life where I’m the sandwich generation and working part time. That’s huge! Because ever since last year I’ve been struggling to get new words on the page, and that’s not like me. Thank goodness for the library!

So how is the book coming?

Okay, so I’m cheating. I’m not really working on a new book for Nano. I started November with the goal of finishing up Broken Mirror, the third book in the Tales of the Black Court and the book that I’ve been struggling with for months, and then moving on to a new book in the Haunted Holidays series. But, since I’m behind, I’m just working on Broken Mirror. And that’s fine with me. It’s not like I’ll be winning Nano anyway. And I’m only counting new words for my Nano page.

So my grand total, so far is: 16,099 words written in November.

And the total for the book, so far is: 53, 415

In other words, Nano helped me hit 50k and I’m almost finished with the rough draft, which should come in close to 60k and be done this week. WOOT! I’m taking that as a personal win, even if it’s not a Nano win.

Did you try Nano? How did it go. It’s not quite over yet, you might still buckle down and make it! Only if you skip Thanksgiving. Oh, to be Canadian and have Thanksgiving in October so it wouldn’t interrupt Nano! LOL

Next goal? Check out next Moonday Mania’s post next week to see what I’m doing next and how my new habit is going to continue into the New Year.

Also in December: read all about my fabulous road trip to Glenwood Springs with my girlfriends. WOOT!  We laughed the whole time and I wish I could tell you everything, but “What happens in Glenwood, stays in Glenwood.” At least some of it’s okay for sharing!

Nano 2014 Middle of the Month Check-in

Moonday Mania

a nano-istic blog

NaNoWriMo PARTICIPANT 2014 graphicI’m starting NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) today. Okay, it should have started on Saturday, but I couldn’t really start then. I had plans. It’s Saturday, right? Saturday is generally a family day in my house. So how do I write every day and still fulfill my family obligations?

Well, the answer is I don’t. I can’t write every day. All I can do is try to catch up on the days I do write. That does mean I’ve never actually hit fifty thousand words in one month.

Darn!

So, why attempt Nano at all if I am pretty sure I won’t hit the 50k?

Good question.

I do it because I’m always hopeful I might. You can’t reach the top of a mountain without trying and even though I’m pretty sure I’m not prepared and out of shape for the climb, I’m still trying. Right up until today I still figure I can catch up. But then I hit the middle of the month and realize it’s likely not going to happen. So, do I quit?

NO!

I keep trying to climb that mountain. I keep writing. Even though I’m pretty aware that I am going to have to stop short of the summit I head for the next best thing, the saddle that’s close to the top. In Nano terms, for me, that means I’m thinking 30k. Which is a pretty amazing amount of words in a month. If I hit that, I’m pretty stoked.

Okay, I can’t get the winner’s t-shirt. And I really want it this year, it’s cool. But, given my job, my kids, my parents, oh, and the girl’s weekend that I thought was going to be in October and got moved to November, I’m going to be happy if I hit 30k.

Will my novella be finished?

Sadly, no. But Broken Mirror will be in it’s rough draft stage and I should have a good start on the novella and I will have some writing momentum worked up that I’m planning on riding into December.

Check back next week to see how I’m doing. This week was not a great word count, but this month is so much better than last month, and so much better than the month before, that I’m riding Nano as far as I can go!

Get A Log Line Baby!

Moonday Mania

a nano-istic blog

NaNoWriMo PARTICIPANT 2014 graphicI’m starting NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) today. Okay, it should have started on Saturday, but I couldn’t really start then. I had plans. And I’ll be blogging more about how that works with Nano next Moonday Mania, so check it out. We’re Nanoing romance all month on Jessica Aspen Writes!

So, how do you keep your focus and end up with a terrific story at the end of the month? Kristen Lamb knows. You need a log line. She wrote a terrific blog last week about why people fail with their stories and how even bad stories can get made into movies. Check it out:

http://warriorwriters.wordpress.com/2014/10/29/write-a-terrific-novel-nano-minimize-revisions-improve-odds-of-finishing-and-publishing/

What is a log line? It’s your elevator pitch. The one thing you should be able to get out of your stumbling mouth when that famous agent, editor, author asks you when you’re waiting in line for drinks at the bar, “So, what’s your book about?”

A great place to learn about log lines and writing that story idea down is by checking out author Randy Ingermanson’s Snowflake Method. If you follow me at all you know I’m a big Randy Ingermanson fan. I love the Snowflake method and it’s perfect for Nano.

You start with a character with a goal. It’s that simple. Frodo needs to get the ring to the mountain. But Randy suggests you put it into non-specific terms. Small, underestimated hero takes powerful evil ring across an entire world, facing great danger and discovering the meaning of loyalty and true friendship.

Okay, that’s more than the fifteen words Randy recommends, but you get the drift. Let’s winnow it down even farther:

Underestimated hero takes powerful evil ring across an entire world and discovers the meaning of true friendship.

Still more than fifteen, but I like it, so I’m leaving it.

Write it down on a sticky note and put it where you can see it when you write.

And that’s how you do a log line. And how you keep Nano and the end of the 50K in your focus.

Do you use log lines in your writing? Can you winnow down your favorite stories to just a few words? It’s actually a fun game. Go ahead and try it!

NaNoWriMo is Coming…Are Your Prepared?

Moonday Mania

some NaNoWriMo ispiration!

black nanowrimo winner t shirt

Have to win Nano this year because the shirt is amazing!

National Novel Writing Month is almost upon us and I’m so not ready! I’m working hard on my third book in the Tales of the Dark Court series, but for NaNoWriMo you really should start a new book fresh on November first, and then work through to the end of the month. Usually I have an outline and I’m ready to go, but not this year. So I thought I’d put together a mash-up of some advice out there on getting going with Nano and help jump start my writing.

Post one: Bob Mayer

If you are an author and haven’t heard of Bob’s fabulous writing course, Write It Forward, then click on the link and you too can be posting fabulous Bob quotes on your refrigerator. It’s not really a course on how to write, but on how to move your writing career forward. Actually, it can apply to almost anything in your life you need help moving forward on. Now Bob has a NaNoWriMo Survival Kit with not only Write it Forward, but also How to Write The Book: The Novel Writer’s Toolkit and How to Succeed in Today’s Digital World: How We Made Our First Million on Kindle. All for $9.99. Frankly, I’d pay that for just Write it Forward, so I think it’s a fabulous deal.

He’s also blogging about writing and has fabulous Nano tips on his blog. You can check out his post on Why Do You Write and get started getting motivated for Nano!

http://writeitforward.wordpress.com/2014/10/10/nanowrimo-why-do-you-write/

Post two: Bella Andre.

The folks at Nanowrimo recruit “pep talker authors to send emails to your inbox throughout the month of November. Now, you have to wait until Nano actually starts to get this year’s fabulous line up, but if you go to the Nano site you can read past years and get motivated. I saw Bella Andre talk at this summer’s RWA writer’s convention and she is amazing! Not only is she beautiful and multi-published, but she is a go-getter. Reading that she has trouble getting writing really made me realize that I’m not alone. Everyone struggles. Even authors who write 11 books in 30 months. Go figure! Click on the link below and check out her 2013 Nano pep talk.

Post three: Julie Daines

And last, but not least, some tried and true tips to get you started from author Julie Daines. What I think is cool about Julie is that ALL of her published books are Nano books. Just imagine if you did that, every year you would publish at least one book. Love it! My goals are to publish at least one full length book and one short one every year, but imagine if I could add in one more and write and publish three a year. I could Nano a short in the fall, and Nano a short at Camp Nano in the spring. It’s got me thinking!

While you’re on Julie’s site make sure you check out her pictures of her ideal house at the bottom of her home page. I want to live there too!

http://www.juliedaines.com/2014/10/nanowrimo-tips.html

So, are you going to Nano now? I’m working on getting my word count up when I sit down to write. I’m now at 1,600+ every time I write. That’s really good for Nano. Now I need to work on getting that done every day. Or get that number up to 3k!

Tell me your Nano plans. Are you going to try it? Have you Nano’d in the past? How did it go?

Still need some help? Check out the Nano Prep Page HERE and get started today!

Fall Resolutions, Part 2

Moonday Mania

a blog for the resolutionist in all of us

Last week I got to tell all of you why I am making Fall Resolutions and I whine, whine, whined. If you missed it, click HERE.

This week I get to make them. YAY!

Jessica Aspen’s Fall Resolutions

  1. Write more
  2. Protect the writing time
  3. Schedule, schedule, schedule
  4. Say no
  5. Say no again, and again, and again
  6. Review the goals from January and get crackin’!
  7. Tape a picture of Stephen King on the wall and know, he’s gonna getcha if you fail (Miss my scary Stephen King blog? Click HERE to check it out.)
  8. When all else fails, leave the house and go to the library
  9. When they kick you out at 6pm, go to the coffee shop
  10. When they kick you out at 8pm, go to that 24 hour restaurant by the highway, but get that word count done!

As you can see this boils down to just one resolution. WRITE, and make writing the priority when organizing my life.

In support of that I’m making a few changes to my daily schedule.

  1. Moving my mundane work schedule around so that I have Wednesdays and Fridays as dedicated writing days.
  2. Get all my blogs written and pre-posted on weekend days, leaving the week days for writing and boosting posts.
  3. Work ahead for marketing, blogging, and guest blogging.
  4. Thursdays have become a crazy day for me so after this week’s Paranormal Book Trailer post on Thursdays Bite I’m going to switch my paranormal posts to Fantastic Fridays and stop blogging on Thursdays. That’s going to let me focus on all the non-writing stuff on Thursdays, so that on Fridays I can focus on all the writing stuff.
  5. Work on my blogs on the weekend when the family is underfoot. I know, I’m a wuss. But I like quiet to write and the weekend is not it. But I can do other things, like write a blog, when it’s not so quiet. All I have to do is resist the lure of having fun with the family. I can do that, right?
  6. Get out of the house when I need to. (Okay, that was up in the resolutions, but it’s one of the most difficult for me to do, so I’m putting it in twice!)

What are your Fall Resolutions? Do you ever go back and read through your yearly goals and see how far you’ve come? What motivates you to get back on track when there are only a few months in the year left to get it all done?
