When the Writing Gets Fun, the Writing Gets Easier!

Moonday Mania

a blog about writing romance

In the news:

Silver : A Sexy Shifter Fairytale Romance, released on all channels on April 15th. WOOT! Otherwise all I’m doing right now is writing!

Now here’s the blog:

I always cringe when I see the question: What’s your favorite part of writing . Or the reverse: What do you dislike about writing? The reason I cringe is because I struggle with all the pieces of writing, whether it’s fantasy romance, shifter romance, or paranormal suspense. And yet, I still love all the pieces of writing every single one of those sub-genres. Go figure!

Romance Writing and I have a love/hate relationship.

I’m the same way about getting into the pool. I don’t want to get wet! And yet, when I get into the water, I don’t want to get out. When I’m writing I don’t want to sit down and dive into my romances. I’ll find any excuse not to do it. And I have lots of legitimate excuses. But once I get started, I realize, it’s not so bad. In fact, it’s fun!

I’m really enjoying writing book 4 of the TALES OF THE BLACK COURT.

tales of the black court a fantasy romance collection books 1-3I’ve been away from this series, and writing fantasy romance in particular, for far too long. I hadn’t planned on taking so long to get the SEXY SHIFTER FAIRYTALE ROMANCES out, but life happened and it took six months longer than I’d planned. Ooops! I thought I’d be writing this book, Siobhan’s story, in November. Sigh. (You can read about my big epiphany that I’m not a super hero HERE.)

So, by the time I got to the point where I had to sit at my computer and type real words, I was feeling very anxious about getting into the water again. It had been a long time. What if I couldn’t swim?

Surprise!

Writing this book is amazing. 🙂

I’m truly having fun diving back into my world of elves and witches and magical romances. Yes, I still have that moment of “I don’t wanna!” But once I start writing it’s going super smoothly and I love the story. I think what’s making this fantasy romance more fun than the last is that I’ve had a lot of time to think about what’s going to happen, so the words pour out. I don’t know everything, but I have a good plot. I knew the beginning and the ending and I’ve had some nice surprises from my characters along the way.

Score!

I’m so excited about it that I’m ready to order a cover and get the book out on pre-order, so be looking for that announcement, if not here then definitely in the newsletter.

So, what makes writing fun? Having a roadmap, knowing where you’re going, and deviating when you see a nice place to picnic.

Hope you are all having fun this spring, getting outside into the lovely weather (when you have it), taking spring breaks, and reading lots and lots of fun fantasy romance! WOOT!

What’s In A Badge?

Moonday Mania

a blog for the goal setter in all of us

Do you hit your goals?

As you all know I’m a super goal setter. I don’t always hit all of my goals, but I feel that without setting them, I wouldn’t get nearly as much done. And, another thing you likely know about me, I’m a big fan of National Novel Writing Month, or Nanowrimo, as it’s affectionately called. So I really like when my goals and Nanowrimo coincide. And this year, I’ve been planning writing my next fantasy romance around Nano, so they dovetail nicely.

I try to do this every year, but some years fate intervenes. Like October 2013, when my parents were flooded out of their home in Boulder, Colorado. My November got entirely derailed because my October got derailed. But I reset and that year I skipped Nano altogether. Oh, I think I tried, but I didn’t even sign up on the page. Life was just too upside down.

And that’s okay.

But I think I should get a badge for thinking about it. 🙂

“Badges, we don’t need no stinking badges!”

Badges are a Nano perk. They are silly computer images that keep you going from goal to goal. I love when I hit a goal and a badge pops up! It’s like being a Girl Scout all over again. Every time you hit a goal, you can get a badge. They even start you off with a few, just for fun!

Pantser Badge Planner Badge Tell the world!

Participent Pep Next Generation

I’m a planner now, so I’ve earned the planner badge. Not that I’ve started outlining yet, but I will!

And I’ve told the world that I’m participating in Nanowrimo and writing another fast paced fantasy romance in the TALES OF THE BLACK COURT.

Donate to NaNoWriMo and earn a Badge!

You also can earn a badge when you donate to Nanowrimo and I’m planning this year to donate 10% of my gross income from books I sell in November. Nanowrimo is a fabulous free place to start writing, and they have an amazing out-reach program to get kids writing in the classroom. My kids had fun writing at night in the library at their school write-ins. Literacy for all!

Do you love badges? What about stickers and other non-intrinsic rewards?

Leave a comment below and let me know if you love to reward yourself with stickers, smiley faces, or Nano badges. I love that kind of thing. Do you?

I’m donating 10% of my gross book sales from the month of November to Nanowrimo! WOOT!

Camp NaNoWrimo 2015, in July!

Moonday Mania

a blog for writing

It’s Nano time again!

Camp-Participant-2015-Twitter-ProfileHello all you writers and readers out there. It’s NaNoWrimo time again, and this time we’re heading to camp! I tried to do this in April at the last Camp Nano, but I had a vacation at the end, so I missed my goal. The good news is I did write 8k+ on my latest Sexy Shifter Fairytale Romance, SCARLETT, so I’m thrilled with that.

The bad news is I only hit 8k+ on my latest Sexy Shifter Fairytale Romance, so I’m a little bummed.

I will be finishing SCARLETT in July for the second round of camp. I’ve worked a tiny bit on it in the last month or so, but mostly I’ve been busy getting my fantasy romance series in line for my release of BROKEN MIRROR. I’ve also been working on the edits for RED, the first Sexy Shifter Fairytale Romance.

So what makes Nano work for you?

Okay, I had to think about this. The time I was most successful at Nano I wrote GOLDI, then titled GOLDI AND THE BEAR. It wasn’t the 50k that Nano usually goals, but I hit close to 30k, and that’s my biggest writing month ever! So what worked then? And how can I put those lessons into use this time?

I left the house.

I’ve found that working at home works for me, but only if everyone is out of the house. When I wrote Goldi I was most successful at the coffee shop, because no one bothered me there. A key component of that is that I went to the coffee shop solo. I didn’t go to a Nano write in. I didn’t arrange to meet friends. I also work well at the library, but it’s a little further away.

I had an outline

I had a very solid outline for GOLDI. That meant that I knew what I was going to write that day, and even if I skipped a scene that was causing me issues, I knew where my next step was.

I stayed on track

I have a big issue. I let everyone and everything else in my life derail me from writing. That month I stayed focused and wrote. Saying no is one of the hardest things for me, especially to my family. But I need to get this story finished. Not just because I have two more to write in this series, but also because I want to move on to the next TALES OF THE BLACK COURT, and HAUNTED HOLIDAYS.

Yes, I have too many projects that I want to do. But they are all doable, if I focus, focus, focus.

Can I do it? Yes I can!

Staying positive is a key piece of being successful at NaNoWrimo. I have a very doable goal this time. I want to write 20k to add to the 8k I already have written for SCARLETT. 30 days, 20k. And I usually only am able to write about five days a week. That works out to 22 writing days for me. (I only write on the weekdays because the family obligations take up the weekends). That’s about 909 words per day.

When I’m on a roll, 1k per hour is an easy thing to do. So that’s only one hour per day. Can I find an hour per weekday to write? Yes I can!

Okay, let’s face it. I don’t usually make Nano. What can I do differently?

Well, I don’t ever make it to 50k. So I believe by setting my Camp Nano goal to 20k, that’s a doable number for me. Sure it’s still a challenge. I have a day job, kids, a husband. And Molly the Labrador needs to be walked every day. I also need to keep up with my exercise routine and to cook healthy food. Oh, and shop for the healthy food. But I’ve set myself up for as much success as possible and I think I can do it this time! I’ve definitely written 20k in a month before.

RED was written in three weeks. GOLDI in four. I wrote SNOW  in about a month too. All of those are 30k books, so I know I can do it. I just have to…stay focused!

What are your goals for July?

Are you doing anything special for the month of July? Are you setting goals? Nanoing? Let me know if you have a particular goal for July, or just for the summer.

Cyber Monday: Last Day for #99cent #Romance & Last Nano Update

Moonday Mania

the last nano check in

So I’m a nano failure. Maybe. If you count writing 50,000 words in 30 days as the only way to count success. But I don’t. I count my successes differently. And my success is that I wrote more words in November than I’ve written in any month so far this year. I re-established some great writing habits. And, I re-discovered my commitment to writing.

Now that’s success!

I also am committed to trying something I’ve never been able to pull off successfully and that is: writing new words every week, even while editing. You see, I’ve usually been the type of writer to be immersed in one book. I write that book, then let it sit and maybe edit or work on something else, and then when I’m ready to edit the book I leave the other projects and dive into the edits. No writing new words because I’m all about the one book.

But, I want to be a more prolific writer. When I’m writing, and I’m in the flow, I can produce a decent amount of words per week. But then I stop writing, and getting back into that flow takes too long. What I want to have happen is I want to be able to keep that ability to write in the zone even while editing.

So that’s one of my new goals as I head into December.

Now, December is typically my month to review my goals, so I’ll be doing that very soon on the blog. This last year was a very different year for me. I went from a really difficult Fall 2013 into Winter 2014- sick and run down. I slept for the first few months, totally re-vamped my diet and lifestyle and got myself healthy over the spring. Just when I should have been writing I started a new job, that threw a wrench into my Diva writing style. And I’ve ended up here. Fed up with the Diva and ready to write.

So, top of my list of goals will be to write new words every week. Even when I’m editing the heck out of Broken Mirror, which is my other top goal. My health slid a little over November, another reason I didn’t hit my word goal. The killer cold lasted two weeks and sapped my energy. But that’s just another excuse. I’m looking forward to being healthy in December and writing as if it’s Nano again, but adding the editing in. Will I hit 50k in December?

No. I’m not planning on it. But I am planning on  increasing my word count from November. And who knows? If I do this all year I may head into next November with 50k being a possibility. Hey, I’m an optimist. It could happen!

How was your November? Did the fall weather, snow, or being sick knock you from achieving your goals? What are you going to do about it? Are you going to be the Diva and whine, whine, whine? Or are you going to pull up the big girl boots (mine are tall and black) and get moving on your goals?

Today is the last day to purchase those 8 amazing romance authors at 99 cents!

Nano Update and 8 Author Book Sale!

Moonday Madness

a blog just before turkey day

Hi all! I’m Nanoing away, more about that in a minute.

The big news: Black Friday is coming up and you get to shop for romance from your easy chair!

your next favorite book sale

Eight fabulous romance authors have gotten together to bring you a 99cent sale that lasts all weekend.

Everything from spicy Gothic romance (hmm, wonder who’s book that is?) to romantic suspense to romance for women who love men who love curves and everything in between! It officially starts Black Friday and runs through Cyber Monday, so get your clicking finger ready and shop! shop! shop!

Book links, blurbs, and covers will be coming soon!

Back to the Nano front!

I’m still slogging away at Nano. Someday I WILL hit 50 thousand words in a month, but it won’t be this month. The killer cold hit last week and it’s slowed me down. I’m not sure (okay, I’m pretty sure it wasn’t happening this month) if I would have been able to hit 50k, but the good news is I’ve hit a decent word count stride, and here’s how I’m doing it.

I’m hitting the road!

Yes, I’ve had to leave my cozy writing nest with my ever flowing coffee pot and fireplace and head to the library. When I’m there I don’t even ask for the WiFi code, I just head to the quiet room and see if there is a table available and write! If I’m lucky, I can get a whole room to myself, but last week it was crazy there, I couldn’t even find a study carol that was unoccupied and I had to use a sofa and perch my laptop on my lap. (Um, they may be named laptops for that reason, but that was not the best way to write.)

And of course, last week I was hampered by coughing. There’s nothing like being in the quiet room in the library and hacking out a lung. Not only do you feel the shame of being the one to break the silence (unlike that dude who had a whole conversation on his cell-phone, despite the big sign that says NO CELL PHONE USE) but, I also knew that everyone was wondering if I carried some killer disease.

Cough, cough.

Back to the word count!

And now you see why I haven’t hit the 50k, despite the 2k per day I worked in the library. I let too much life intervene. But the good news is I’m almost at 15k, and that is a fabulous word count for a regular month. Also, I’ve figured out what is working for me to get me through this period of my life where I’m the sandwich generation and working part time. That’s huge! Because ever since last year I’ve been struggling to get new words on the page, and that’s not like me. Thank goodness for the library!

So how is the book coming?

Okay, so I’m cheating. I’m not really working on a new book for Nano. I started November with the goal of finishing up Broken Mirror, the third book in the Tales of the Black Court and the book that I’ve been struggling with for months, and then moving on to a new book in the Haunted Holidays series. But, since I’m behind, I’m just working on Broken Mirror. And that’s fine with me. It’s not like I’ll be winning Nano anyway. And I’m only counting new words for my Nano page.

So my grand total, so far is: 16,099 words written in November.

And the total for the book, so far is: 53, 415

In other words, Nano helped me hit 50k and I’m almost finished with the rough draft, which should come in close to 60k and be done this week. WOOT! I’m taking that as a personal win, even if it’s not a Nano win.

Did you try Nano? How did it go. It’s not quite over yet, you might still buckle down and make it! Only if you skip Thanksgiving. Oh, to be Canadian and have Thanksgiving in October so it wouldn’t interrupt Nano! LOL

Next goal? Check out next Moonday Mania’s post next week to see what I’m doing next and how my new habit is going to continue into the New Year.

Also in December: read all about my fabulous road trip to Glenwood Springs with my girlfriends. WOOT!  We laughed the whole time and I wish I could tell you everything, but “What happens in Glenwood, stays in Glenwood.” At least some of it’s okay for sharing!

Nano 2014 Middle of the Month Check-in

Moonday Mania

a nano-istic blog

NaNoWriMo PARTICIPANT 2014 graphicI’m starting NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) today. Okay, it should have started on Saturday, but I couldn’t really start then. I had plans. It’s Saturday, right? Saturday is generally a family day in my house. So how do I write every day and still fulfill my family obligations?

Well, the answer is I don’t. I can’t write every day. All I can do is try to catch up on the days I do write. That does mean I’ve never actually hit fifty thousand words in one month.

Darn!

So, why attempt Nano at all if I am pretty sure I won’t hit the 50k?

Good question.

I do it because I’m always hopeful I might. You can’t reach the top of a mountain without trying and even though I’m pretty sure I’m not prepared and out of shape for the climb, I’m still trying. Right up until today I still figure I can catch up. But then I hit the middle of the month and realize it’s likely not going to happen. So, do I quit?

NO!

I keep trying to climb that mountain. I keep writing. Even though I’m pretty aware that I am going to have to stop short of the summit I head for the next best thing, the saddle that’s close to the top. In Nano terms, for me, that means I’m thinking 30k. Which is a pretty amazing amount of words in a month. If I hit that, I’m pretty stoked.

Okay, I can’t get the winner’s t-shirt. And I really want it this year, it’s cool. But, given my job, my kids, my parents, oh, and the girl’s weekend that I thought was going to be in October and got moved to November, I’m going to be happy if I hit 30k.

Will my novella be finished?

Sadly, no. But Broken Mirror will be in it’s rough draft stage and I should have a good start on the novella and I will have some writing momentum worked up that I’m planning on riding into December.

Check back next week to see how I’m doing. This week was not a great word count, but this month is so much better than last month, and so much better than the month before, that I’m riding Nano as far as I can go!

Get A Log Line Baby!

Moonday Mania

a nano-istic blog

NaNoWriMo PARTICIPANT 2014 graphicI’m starting NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) today. Okay, it should have started on Saturday, but I couldn’t really start then. I had plans. And I’ll be blogging more about how that works with Nano next Moonday Mania, so check it out. We’re Nanoing romance all month on Jessica Aspen Writes!

So, how do you keep your focus and end up with a terrific story at the end of the month? Kristen Lamb knows. You need a log line. She wrote a terrific blog last week about why people fail with their stories and how even bad stories can get made into movies. Check it out:

http://warriorwriters.wordpress.com/2014/10/29/write-a-terrific-novel-nano-minimize-revisions-improve-odds-of-finishing-and-publishing/

What is a log line? It’s your elevator pitch. The one thing you should be able to get out of your stumbling mouth when that famous agent, editor, author asks you when you’re waiting in line for drinks at the bar, “So, what’s your book about?”

A great place to learn about log lines and writing that story idea down is by checking out author Randy Ingermanson’s Snowflake Method. If you follow me at all you know I’m a big Randy Ingermanson fan. I love the Snowflake method and it’s perfect for Nano.

You start with a character with a goal. It’s that simple. Frodo needs to get the ring to the mountain. But Randy suggests you put it into non-specific terms. Small, underestimated hero takes powerful evil ring across an entire world, facing great danger and discovering the meaning of loyalty and true friendship.

Okay, that’s more than the fifteen words Randy recommends, but you get the drift. Let’s winnow it down even farther:

Underestimated hero takes powerful evil ring across an entire world and discovers the meaning of true friendship.

Still more than fifteen, but I like it, so I’m leaving it.

Write it down on a sticky note and put it where you can see it when you write.

And that’s how you do a log line. And how you keep Nano and the end of the 50K in your focus.

Do you use log lines in your writing? Can you winnow down your favorite stories to just a few words? It’s actually a fun game. Go ahead and try it!

National Novel Writing Month is almost upon us and I’m so not ready! I’m working hard on my third book in the Tales of the Dark Court series, but for NaNoWriMo you really should start a new book fresh on November first, and then work through to the end of the month. Post two: Bella Andre.

The folks at Nanowrimo recruit “pep talker authors to send emails to your inbox throughout the month of November. Now, you have to wait until Nano actually starts to get this year’s fabulous line up, but if you go to the Nano site you can read past years and get motivated. I saw Bella Andre talk at this summer’s RWA writer’s convention and she is amazing! Not only is she beautiful and multi-published, but she is a go-getter. Reading that she has trouble getting writing really made me realize that I’m not alone. Everyone struggles. Even authors who write 11 books in 30 months. Go figure! Click on the link below and check out her 2013 Nano pep talk.

Post three: Julie Daines

And last, but not least, some tried and true tips to get you started from author Julie Daines. What I think is cool about Julie is that ALL of her published books are Nano books. Just imagine if you did that, every year you would publish at least one book. Love it! My goals are to publish at least one full length book and one short one every year, but imagine if I could add in one more and write and publish three a year. I could Nano a short in the fall, and Nano a short at Camp Nano in the spring. It’s got me thinking!

While you’re on Julie’s site make sure you check out her pictures of her ideal house at the bottom of her home page. I want to live there too!

So, are you going to Nano now? I’m working on getting my word count up when I sit down to write. I’m now at 1,600+ every time I write. That’s really good for Nano. Now I need to work on getting that done every day. Or get that number up to 3k!

Tell me your Nano plans. Are you going to try it? Have you Nano’d in the past? How did it go?

Still need some help? Check out the Nano Prep Page HERE and get started today!

Happy Third of July!

Thursdays Bite

a non-paranormal holiday blog

Hello and happy 3rd of July! Tomorrow is the fourth and I’ll be celebrating with a BBQ and fireworks, of course! For those of you wondering what is happening to poor Cassie in the Tales of the Black Court, I’ll also be working hard on my fantasy romance, Broken Mirror, my Camp NaNoWriMo project for the month of July.

Caught in the Black Queen’s spell, ignorant of who she is and why she should hate the queen,  the only man who might tell Cassie the truth is the court trickster…and everyone knows he’s not a man to be trusted.

Writing fantasy romance can be slow, you have to build the world, create the characters, oh, and write a steamy, love story. But so far this one is rocketing along and I think it’s on target for early 2015 release. Yippee!

Today I’m sharing the Freedom to Read Blog Hop I discovered through my Triber feed. I haven’t done a blog hop in a while, and I’m not a participating author in this one, but I thought my readers might want the chance to meet some new authors and enter to win in the giveaway!

Do You Have Your Cabin for Camp NaNo?

Moonday Mania

we’re heading to camp!

Summer is officially here and Camp Nano opens July First! Are you writing with me? Do you want to?

I’ve been dreaming, organizing and finally outlining Broken Mirror, the third book in The Tales of the Black Court, and the final book about the three MacElvy cousins, Trina, Bryanna and Cassie, but I haven’t started actually writing it. I’m saving that for camp!

Camp Nano is different from NaNoWriMo in that you can set your own goals and write on whatever project you want to. It doesn’t have to be a novel and you don’t have to hit 50,000 words in 30 days. But I’m going to go for the standard anyway. My goal is 50,000 words for the month.

July is one day longer than the standard 30 days so we have a bonus day. WOOT!

I’ve never actually hit 50K. Usually I’m working full time and hitting 30K has been a success, so this year I’m promising myself a goody if I hit 50K. I’ve been to the NaNoWriMo store and I’ve chosen a few prizes for myself.

If I hit 50K I’m going to gift myself with a mug. If you go to the website it has two sides. The other sicamp nanowrimo mugde says: “Creativity Very High Today”

And if I surpass that and hit 60K I’ll go with a camp NaNoWriMo t-shirt. There are four different styles and I haven’t decided which one I like best, but I’m leaning toward this one:

camp nanowrimo blue on black t-shirt

Want to join the fun?

ML Guida and I are opening a private cabin. If you want to join with us just fill out the contact form with your Camp NaNo contact name and information and we’ll add you to our cabin. And We’ll donate $10 to the NaNo Young Writer’s program for anyone in our cabin who hits their goal, up to our maximum donation.

You can follow my progress on the Camp NaNo Site, or I’ll be updating my progress meter on the Broken Mirror Page HERE.
