Broken Mirror is released!

Squee!

I’m so excited to have this book finally out. It’s taken longer than I thought, but I persevered and it’s here. And one of the best things for me about this fantasy romance is the ending. I don’t want to give spoilers, but I love the ending of this book. When I wrote THE DARK HUNTSMAN I thought there would only be three books in this series. But I’ve figured out that I’m going to write two more! That’s good news for you and good news for me.

Meet Cassie, my last MacElvy cousin

I love all the MacElvy’s but for those of you who love spunky heroines, Cassie is stellar! You can get a really good idea of her character in her backstory novella THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MIRROR, A Fantasy Tale of the Black Court. Or you can just read BROKEN MIRROR and find out how terrific she is. I love what happens to Cassie in this book because unlike my other two books, Cassie is already a strong person. She’s had to be. She’s a mirror, a psychic, and dealing with having the Goddess hijack her body and use her to give out premonitions is a scary thing. It comes with migraines and a loss off control and somehow the messages are not always received like they should be by certain family members.

Cassie’s gift has kept her and her immediate family alive—so far—but that’s put to the test when she meets her match at the end of PRINCE BY BLOOD AND BONE. If you haven’t read that one, I won’t spoil it for you, but FYI, it’s a cliffhanger and you’ll want to jump right into BROKEN MIRROR afterwards. I didn’t mean for it to be such a cliffhanger, but sometimes when you write fantasy, things happen. The romance is all good and of course Bryanna and Kian find their HEA, so it’s satisfying, but I know fans wanted Cassie’s story. So here it is!

Bosco, bad boy hero

I admit it. I love the bad boys and Bosco is one of them. He’s had a rough background and his sister is a prisoner of the White Queen, so he has some excuse. But it doesn’t change the fact that he is determined to rescue his sister, Siobhan (pronouched Sh-Vaan), and if Cassie is in his way, that’s too bad. He has to think of Siobhan first.

Or does he?

Cassie may be the means to an end for Bosco, but spending time with her he’s intrigued by her spirit and how she copes with how her fate has been twisted by the Black Queen of the Fae. As the puzzle of Cassie is revealed, and Bosco and Cassie’s fates are entwined together, he finds himself struggling more and more with his dilemma. Rescue his sister? Or save Cassie. And of course, falling in love is going to ruin all of his plans.

Broken Mirror, A Fantasy Romance of the Black Court

Book three Tales of the Black Court

A false princess, the court trickster, and a magic spell, woven together with a frog prince twist.

Cassie MacElvy believes she’s a fae princess, but her life of pretty gowns and constant parties is an illusion. Trapped in a twisted spell, Cassie uses her psychic Gift to help the Black Queen hunt down the rebel Prince Kian and his human wife, never knowing she’s hunting her own sister. But when a handsome blackeyed fae kisses her, the fairy tale begins to crumble, and she tumbles down into a confused rabbit hole of memories and magic.

Bosco is the court’s fool and a womanizer, but secretly he’s a spy, looking for a missing human psychic. All he has to do is find her and hand her over to his mysterious employer, and he’ll finally have enough power to complete a quest he started nearly a hundred years ago. When he runs into a beautiful fae princess who shouldn’t exist, he knows something is very wrong in the Queen’s court. But lovely Cassie might be the only person who can help him achieve his quest, and Bosco decides he will root out all of Cassie’s secrets, even if it means losing her trust.

CD Hersh and Son of the Moonless Night

Fantastic Fridays

a blog for the paranormal romance lover

SON OF A MOONLESS NIGHT_505x825It’s here! Son of the Moonless Night, a paranormal romance suspense by writing team, CD Hersh, has been released! Join me today in welcoming CD Hersh and find out more about their Turning Stone Chronicles and how they write as a team.

AUTHOR’S PERSONAL SPECIFICS:

  • Tell us a little about yourself and your book. We are a husband and wife writing team who have been married for 45 years. We met in high school, got married in college, started writing plays and dramas for our church about 18 years ago, and paranormal romance about 8 years ago. We like to travel, go to movies, and just hang out together.

The Son of the Moonless Night is the third book in The Turning Stone Chronicles series. Thrust back into the world of paranormal huntress, Deputy Coroner Katrina Romanovski must unravel a string of murders she believes are vampire attacks. When she discovers the shape shifter she’s in love with is the murderer, she must reconcile her feelings for him, examine her life of violence against paranormals, and justify deceiving him in order to bring him to justice.

This book continues Owen Jordan Riley’s story, whom you met in book two, Blood Brothers, a year after the loss of his best friend whom he thinks was killed by Rhys Temple. This book also continues with Alexi’s and Rhys’ story to become the long awaited bringers of peace to the Turning Stone Society.

  • Do you have cheerleaders supporting you as a writer? We would have to say that we have family who are cheerleaders. They are always asking when the next book of the series is coming out and what is it going to be about.
  • What are your hobbies or other interests that get you away from the stress of writing? Disneyland!
  • Give two random thoughts, quotes, or surprising tidbits about yourself, something that might surprise your readers. Hummmmmmmmmmmmm. A quote Donald likes is “Don’t take life too seriously, nobody gets out alive anyway.” Oh, Catherine cut a record when she was a teenager. She also made a recording recently at “The Grand Old Opry” at Ryman Auditorium.
  • Tell us the story behind your pen name? Our pen name came about after a lot of research to be sure it would stand out. Ultimately, we decided to just use our initials. The “C” stands for Catherine, and the “D” stands for Donald. Hersh is a shortened version of our real name that Donald always got called when he was younger when someone wanted to get a rise from him. He hated it, but enjoys it now. Catherine just said, “You never told me that before!” LOL

WRITING BACKGROUND & THOUGHTS:

  • Pantser/Plotter/or both? Tell us how you work. We are plantsers. We plot heavily but allow room for the muse and characters to lead us. Together we lay out each character’s story arc. One of the things Donald always looks for is having two plot lines, one major the other minor, but woven together. We usually have the chapters and scenes plotted by character. Catherine will often apply the hero’s journey to the story as well. Once the plotting is accomplished, Catherine sits down and fleshes out the story. Then Donald critiques each line after Catherine has it on paper. Then together we do line-by-line edits adding any missing elements before showing it to anyone.
  • Come on, dish…is there anything unusual about your writing habits? We work together and apart. Then together when doing the final version. Also, what’s said in the writing office stays in the writing office, because we can get kind of heated.
  • Do you get writer’s block and if so how do you get past it? Not really. If she’s not ready to write, Catherine gets writers avoidance and will do things like clean the toilets.

GENERAL WRITING INFORMATION:

  • Have you had many rejections? How did you deal with them? How did they push you? As C.D. Hersh we never got a rejection on the series. It was snapped up the first time out to an editor. Catherine went through all the rejections working as a solo journalist and author. You deal with rejection by just going forward. Whether or not someone likes a book is subjective. Once you realize that, and you know that you have a good grasp of the basics, it’s just a matter of trying until you succeed.
  • Do you have a writing schedule? How do you juggle writing, family, work, and life’s surprises? Not really, unless there is a contract deadline. Then Catherine gets antsy to get it done even if there are six months left. As for juggling the other stuff, Donald’s retirement has made things easier. For life’s surprises, well, that’s what a laptop is for. We finished book two, Blood Brothers, as we supported Catherine’s best friend dealing with her mother’s hospitalization and death.

Can she reconcile his deception and murderous revenge spree and find a way to redeem him? Or will she condemn him for the same things she has done and walk away from love?

Excerpt:

A crash in the alley stopped Katrina Romanovski mid-stride. Like the October mist swirling in off the lake, her gypsy blood stirred sending her intuition into high gear. Something unnatural was happening.

Go see what’s wrong. She heard her father’s voice as clearly as if he stood next to her.

On the heels of his words came her mother’s pragmatic warning in clipped British tones. You know what curiosity killed. Katrina pushed the ever-present warning aside. Mom never approved of Dad’s supernatural hunts and even less of his drawing her into them.

Pulling the oversized cross she always wore out from under her shirt, Kat looked around for a weapon. Please, not a vampire. I hate vampires! A piece of wood sticking out of the trashcan at the front of the alley caught her eye.

Grabbing it, she broke the end off into a sharp point. The mist-filled air filtered the light from the single bulb over one of the alley doorways. The wind swirled the loose trash around making a quiet approach difficult. Sidestepping the paper, with the stake in one hand and holding the gun she took from her purse in the other hand, she crept into the alley.

A roar echoed against the buildings, the sound nearly sending her running. That roar wasn’t a vampire. It sounded more like an animal. Kat inched closer. In the yellow pool of light from the back door of the building, a black bear, over seven feet tall, reared on its back legs and swung its paw at the man standing at the edge of the light. He crashed to the ground, shirt torn open from the slashing claws. Blood covered the fabric, and he clasped his left hand over his shoulder to stem the flow. The bear bent toward him, teeth bared in a smile. A wicked smile.

Kat aimed her gun, but before she could pull the trigger, a shot rang out. The flash of gunpowder lit the face of the injured man. The blast reverberated against the buildings. With an enraged bellow, the bear staggered backward against the wall. Shaking his head, the animal dropped to all four paws. Weaving like a drunk, he lumbered toward his attacker. The man took aim again, shooting the animal between the eyes. Animal and human collapsed on the dirty, littered pavement.

As she started to move forward, Kat’s gypsy senses crawled over her skin like angry red ants. As she slipped back into the shadows, the bear shed fur. Changing size. Then, finally, turning into a man.

Shape shifters. Her stake wasn’t any good against them, and her bullets weren’t silver. This one appeared dead anyway. Had the wounded man seen the shift? Tossing the stake aside, she paused by the shifter and quickly moved to the wounded man. Out cold. Still human.

When she touched him, his eyelids fluttered open. “Did I get it?”

“What?”

“The bear.”

Release Day! The Other Side of the Mirror

Fantastic Fridays

a semi-erratic fantasy romance blog

WOOT! I published a book this week!

The Other Side of the Mirror, cover art by Viola EstrellaTHE OTHER SIDE OF THE MIRROR, the non-romance, fantasy, short story that precludes BROKEN MIRROR: A Fantasy Romance of the Black Court, is out. And I’m super excited to say that my newsletter subscribers all had the opportunity to download free copies. Of course, it’s a bargain anyway at 99 cents, but I wanted to say “thank you” to everyone who has waited patiently for BROKEN MIRROR, and sending a free copy to newsletter subscribers seemed the best way to do that.

If you’ve wondered what I’ve been up to, it’s been working on getting this book out. Publishing a book has so  many small steps, it’s a wonder they all get done and there is finally a book to read. But it does happen. The other things I’ve been working on are edits for BROKEN MIRROR as well as writing new words on my sexy shifter story. And having a life. Of course, that takes some time too.

So, if my blogs are short and sweet, you’ll know it’s because I’m working hard to get you the next book. 🙂

Lost in Underhill, separated from her sister by a powerful fae spell, Cassie must help her mother and herself get back to Earth. But, strange beasts, evil spirits, and fierce warriors stand in their way. Will they ever get home, or will the last battle with the faery queen prove their undoing?

When the Black Queen of the fae sends ogres to attack their safe-house in Albuquerque, the three remaining MacElvy witches are forced to use a mystical fae globe to escape. But things go very wrong. When Cassie comes-to her sister, Bryanna, has disappeared and Cassie and her mom are stranded in the lands of the fae. With nothing but their magical Gifts to help them they must find Bryanna and make their way home through Underhill, a magical land where strange beasts, evil spirits, and fierce warriors stand in their way. Or will the evil Black Queen track them down and kill them before they can make it to safety?

#Fantasy #Romance Two for One #Cover Reveal!

Fantastical Fridays

a blog for the wonderment in all of us

I’m super excited to have two covers to reveal for my fantasy romance series, Tales of the Black Court. My new cover artist, Viola Estrella of Estrella Cover Art, did a fantastic job keeping the essence of the series intact, but also adding some new twists. And that makes this twisted fairy tale romance author very happy.

If you’ve been waiting to find out what happens to Cassie after the end of PRINCE BY BLOOD AND BONE, you won’t have to wait much longer. BROKEN MIRROR will be out soon. I’m hesitant to pick a date since every time I do that fate jumps in and takes a hand, but it is coming. And soon. So, just to tide you over, here is the cover and the blurb!

Broken Mirror cover art by Viola Estrella

BROKEN MIRROR

A Fantasy Romance of the Black Court

by Jessica Aspen

Cassie MacElvy believes she’s a fae princess, but her life of pretty gowns and constant parties is an illusion. Trapped in a twisted spell, Cassie uses her psychic Gift to help the Black Queen hunt down the rebel Prince Kian and his human wife, never knowing she’s hunting her own sister. But when a handsome black-eyed fae kisses her, the fairy tale begins to crumble, and she tumbles down into a confused rabbit hole of memories and magic.

And that’s not all!

I know you all are dying for BROKEN MIRROR to be published, but it has so much editing and proofreading—and all that jazz—yet to go through, that it won’t be out for a little longer. BUT WAIT!

I’ve written a little prequel for all of you to tide you over. It’s titled, THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MIRROR, and it’s what happened to Cassie and her mother when they were torn from Bryanna’s arms in the first chapter of PRINCE BY BLOOD AND BONE. It’s not a romance, since Cassie doesn’t meet her hero until BROKEN MIRROR, but I think readers will love getting a behind the scenes glimpse into the backstory of both books.

And here is the fabulous cover that Viola did for THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MIRROR.

The Other Side of the Mirror, cover art by Viola Estrella

THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MIRROR

A Fantasy Tale of The Black Court

by Jessica Aspen

Don’t you love the way Viola has Cassie behind that super cool Evil Queen mirror? And, thanks to my husband, Jeff, for suggesting that if it’s in a mirror, the image should be reversed. Don’t know why I didn’t think about it, but he’s the visual person in the family. I’m just the writer!

Want a free copy of THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MIRROR? Newsletter subscribers will have the opportunity to read and review it for free. So, if you haven’t signed up yet for my newsletter, CLICK HERE and sign up, then keep an eye out for the free copy announcement. You’ll also get a free bonus book.

I’ll also be publishing this book in May as a serial on Wattpad, so another option is to join Wattpad and follow me.

And of course, like the other books in the Tales of the Black Court Fantasy Romance series, it will be available for sale on Ibooks, Amazon, Nook Press, Kobo and ARE.

Werewolves or Shifters? What’s In Your Romance?

Fantastic Fridays

wolves, bears, and jaguars…oh my

I’m happy to announce that I have the rights back to my first three hot paranormal romance novellas, Twisted Tales: Come Into the Woods.

In 2015 I’ll be working at re-vamping and re-branding the series. They’ll still be the hot, twisted fairy-tales they’ve always been, but with new covers, new blurbs, and possibly a new series title. I love these books. They are fun, sexy romps through the wilds of Colorado and they are chock full of romance, intrigue, and hot alpha werewolves.

Or do I mean shifters?

When I first wrote these novellas the paranormal romance readers hadn’t latched onto the shifter label as hard as they have now and I used werewolf to describe my beasts, even though my characters shift into full wolves and not scary Boris Karloff wannabes. Grr!

But, a year or two after my books became published it became clear to me that the romance community had issues with the word werewolf. They saw it as the half-man, half-beast from the horror movies. And, if I were writing a paranormal with a scary half-man, half-beast, it would still work. But I’m not. I’m writing about sexy shifters who become full fledged amazing animals. Wolves and bears, and maybe I’ll be venturing into jaguars. (I’ll have to tell you about the super sexy Latin lover I just met. Mmmm.)

Sorry, got distracted. Back on topic…

Now that I’m re-vamping these books I have to consider several issues.

Are they dated? Do they need new edits? And what sort of changes should I make?

I don’t think they’re dated, but I will definitely read through to make sure I don’t have any glaring issues with technology. One of the things I find funny about watching old movies is how fast we’ve changed in our technology. Just look at how the shape and size of the cell phone has changed. From a bulky thing wired into your car, to a huge rectangle, to something so tiny you could easily hide it in a bra, now back to larger bulky rectangles. Who would have predicted they’d get bigger and not smaller?

As for new edits: I think I had pretty decent editing from my previous publisher, but I know my writing has changed and grown. When I re-read through them I think it will be very hard not to tweak my own words and style. I have to decide if I should or not. Would you? If you had the chance to re-write something like that would you take the time? Or would you let it stand as it is. Many e-books are voraciously re-written, even without republication, but that’s not true of classic print novels. Should we re-write?

Back to the question.

So that leads me to the werewolf vs shifter thing. I think, given the current climate of the paranormal romance world, I’m going to seriously consider changing werewolves to wolf shifters. And werebears to bear shifters. I never liked the word werebear anyway. It’s awkward to say. And those aren’t total re-writes, merely a twitch to a wrinkled skirt.

So…

What’s your opinion? Are you a sexy shifter reader? Do you care if it says sexy werewolves? Or do you think horror movie heroes and scary villains instead of hot, hunky, alpha wolves?

You can read my blog and answer the question at the end  and ENTER TO WIN an e-copy of GHOSTS OF CHRISTMAS PAST, the first book in my HAUNTED HOLIDAYS  series.

Brrr! Winter in New England. That’s where I set GHOSTS OF CHRISTMAS PAST. And, in fact, the next five stories are going to also be in the fictional town of Applesett, Mass. Why? Because for me, living in Colorado, New England is full of romance. I love the idea of deep forests and snowy hills. Sleigh rides and snow.

Yes, we have snow here. Of course we do! It’s Colorado. But you really have to drive into the mountains to have a real sleigh ride with horse drawn carriages and all the trimmings. Applesett is a small town, rural, with lots of twisting dirt roads and open fields and places to take your sweetie. Not that Nate and Jen get much time for that! They’re busy fighting off a ghost and falling in love.

But, if you read the book, Jen does have a past where sleigh rides are in order. Or does she? Jen dreams about a time a hundred years ago and another couple in love during the winter. You’ll have to read the book and decide if it’s really Jen’s karmic past, or the ghost making Jen believe it’s her past.

Either way, romance is in the air. In the past, in a horse drawn sleigh, or in the present, where Jen and Nate discover the charms of the town of Applesett and start to fall in love.

Do you find snow romantic? To  ENTER TO WIN an e-copy of GHOSTS OF CHRISTMAS PAST, the first book in my HAUNTED HOLIDAYS  series, answer the question: what’s your form of romance in the snow? Sleigh rides? Skiiing? Hot drinks by the fire? Just let me know and I’ll enter you in the drawing.

And don’t for get to hop over to Hops With Heart and the other amazing authors contests as well as the grand prize!

The Butterfly Connection by Sandra S Kerns

BC Cover 1900x2850 (1)Murder, encryption, and corporate espionage bring two strangers together to break codes and years of silence to solve a very personal case.

Wanted for the murder of her stepbrother, Emma Simms is on the run. She has to convince her brother’s reclusive partner in the FBI to help her find the real killer. If she can’t, she’ll end up in prison for killing the one person who ever believed in her. Her car breaks down just short of her goal and then a car tries to run her over. If not for the blaring of a driver’s horn, she’d be dead before she even gets a chance to talk to Artemis Jones.

The minute he pulls to the side of the road Artemis knows he’s in trouble. The woman is obviously out of her element. If he didn’t miss his guess, the car he scared off was aiming to run her down. He doesn’t need the trouble of helping a woman in distress, but he can’t turn his back on someone in need. It doesn’t take long to learn she’s not so much in distress as spitting mad and loaded for bear. Unfortunately, the bear she’s hunting is him.

Can the two of them put aside their distrust of others and themselves long enough to find the real murderer? Can the passion they discover survive the truths they find along the way?

heart-strong_cover_mccuneCan a ditzy soccer mom with a young son, whose kindness often attracts the wrong type, be heart-strong enough to admit her love to right guy?

* * *

Headstrong. Rachel Kinsey fits the description perfectly. The divorced soccer mom may be ditzy and as sympathetic to losers as a charity, but she knows what she wants. A man completely different from her unreliable ex-husband and the outrageous characters she’s usually doomed to attract.

Enter Jim Landers, the ideal candidate. An accidental encounter introduces her to the tall, dark attorney who loves soccer and kids. The only problem? He’s not prepared for a ready-made family and a woman as comfortable as a beloved sweater rather than a beauty queen. A woman whose kindness, enthusiasm for life, and unguarded honesty may disturb a man who values order, perfection, and serenity. Jim turns to the flawless yet distant Donna as a substitute for Rachel.

She should show him how much he means to her, but rejection from an absent father and a capricious ex-husband may have ruined Rachel’s ability to connect to Jim. Will she risk herself, her son and their future by revealing how much Jim means to her?

A touching, tender tale full of gentle humor, about thinking too much and feeling too little. Rachel must learn to be heart-strong in order to find her soul mate.

Apocalyptic Halloween Facebook Party Today!

Fantastical Fridays

a paranormal celebration

I usually post all my WOOHOO! news on Mondays, but I’m posting today because this Monday I had a fabulous guest interview with time-travel author, Angela Quarles. Anxious to get to the party? Check out the Apocalyptic Halloween Facebook Party dets with author Sam Cheever down below.

I won the CRW Author of the Year Award!

I had a great time at the Colorado Romance Lover’s Tea. Every year we celebrate our anniversary and our published authors and this year was bigger and better than ever. And I had a fabulous surprise, I won CRW Author of the Year. This is amazing to me as I’ve seen several people win this award and they are all amazing authors. I truly wasn’t expecting to win as there are many more great authors in our group, but there I was, up at the front, receiving my award!

And then I had more good news this week.

The Dark Huntsman placed fifth in the International Digital Awards. WOOT!

International Digital Awards Contest Header

This contest has lots of entries, so I’m pleased as punch to have made it on the list. The cool thing about this contest is it is focused on books that are not print based. You can have POD, but not be regularly published. I love this because most published contests are still slanted toward regular print books. They even have a “Best Trailer” category. Digital rocks!

Here are the other books that placed in my category:

~~Paranormal~~

**Novel**

1st Place: AHUNTER4RESCUE by Cynthia A. Clement – Publisher: Self-Published

2nd Place:  FINDER by Connie Suttle – Publisher: SubtleDemon Publishing
3rd Place: DAWN OF A DARK KNIGHT by Zoe Forward – Publisher: The Wild Rose Press
4th Place: CLOUD DUST by Connie Suttle – Publisher: SubtleDemon Publishing
5th Place: THE DARK HUNTSMAN, A Fantasy Romance of the Black Court by Jessican Aspen – Publisher: Abracadabra Publishing

And now…on to the Facebook Party!

Here are the deets, directly quoted from An Apocalyptic Halloween’s Event Page

Are you a fan of Sam Cheever’s books? If so make sure to join us Oct. 24th to help celebrate Apocalyptic Mojo!

What do a time traveling witch and a Sorceri bounty hunter have in common? Not a damn thing! Well…except for some sizzling hot love mojo!

The Epoch Mages and the Sorceri Bounty Hunters are ALWAYS on opposite sides of any issue. They H-A-T-E each other. But when a rogue witch decides to take over the world using flesh-eating zombies, Ardith and Draigh have to work together to stop her. And though they’ve twisted themselves inside out trying to deny their blistering desire for each other, they soon learn they’ll need to work together to accomplish what many before them have failed to do. Yep, it’s all gonna be downhill from there!

No Halloween is complete without a good Apocalypse! Zombies, vampires, witches and aliens, the Apocalyptic Romance Clubhouse will have them all this Halloween. On October 24th, from 11 AM to 11 PM CST, join Sam Cheever and some of your favorite paranormal authors for a full day of great prizes, delicious frights, and sexy snippets.

Disclaimer: Please come equipped with candles, your weapon of choice, a first aid kit and, if the worst should happen, a friend who will dice your brain into giblets if you start frothing at the mouth. The Apocalyptic Romance Clubhouse is not responsible for members getting hit with stray alien ju ju, witch fire or zombie spit, and our insurance does NOT cover werewolf bites so please come prepared.
