Winter Warm Up Blog Hop 2014

Fantastic Fridays

a romance blog hop for the holidays

Young couple embracing

Happy Winter!Romance is in the air and it’s time for the Winter Warm-Up Romance Blog Hop.

Here’s how it works:

You can hop to all the participating authors pages and enter their contests via the Linky List or via the web page at: Hops With Heart Winter Warm-Up  link: http://hopswithheart.blogspot.com/

While you are there you can enter to win the GRAND PRIZE: $75 Amazon Gift Card via the Rafflecopter Box OR you can click on this Rafflecopter Link and go directly to Rafflecopter to enter the contest.

Here’s the RAFFLECOPTER link: http://www.rafflecopter.com/rafl/display/3ad276f824/?

You can read my blog and answer the question at the end  and ENTER TO WIN an e-copy of GHOSTS OF CHRISTMAS PAST, the first book in my HAUNTED HOLIDAYS  series.

Brrr! Winter in New England. That’s where I set GHOSTS OF CHRISTMAS PAST. And, in fact, the next five stories are going to also be in the fictional town of Applesett, Mass. Why? Because for me, living in Colorado, New England is full of romance. I love the idea of deep forests and snowy hills. Sleigh rides and snow.

Yes, we have snow here. Of course we do! It’s Colorado. But you really have to drive into the mountains to have a real sleigh ride with horse drawn carriages and all the trimmings. Applesett is a small town, rural, with lots of twisting dirt roads and open fields and places to take your sweetie. Not that Nate and Jen get much time for that! They’re busy fighting off a ghost and falling in love.

But, if you read the book, Jen does have a past where sleigh rides are in order. Or does she? Jen dreams about a time a hundred years ago and another couple in love during the winter. You’ll have to read the book and decide if it’s really Jen’s karmic past, or the ghost making Jen believe it’s her past.

Either way, romance is in the air. In the past, in a horse drawn sleigh, or in the present, where Jen and Nate discover the charms of the town of Applesett and start to fall in love.

Do you find snow romantic? To  ENTER TO WIN an e-copy of GHOSTS OF CHRISTMAS PAST, the first book in my HAUNTED HOLIDAYS  series, answer the question: what’s your form of romance in the snow? Sleigh rides? Skiiing? Hot drinks by the fire? Just let me know and I’ll enter you in the drawing.

And don’t for get to hop over to Hops With Heart and the other amazing authors contests as well as the grand prize!

Ghosts of Christmas Past

excerpt: chapter one

Jen turned, gazing over the bare winter fields to the tangle of trees. No explanations, no obligations, no complications. For two whole weeks she could just hide here, and write.

The first genuine smile she could remember since April spread her face wide.

Then the pickup arrived.

Black, large, and full of male attitude it parked right next to her vacation house, dwarfing her small car and taking up the entire drive.

“Oh, there’s Nate now.” Mrs. Castlebury waved at the man pushing an eager black Labrador back into the cab while trying to exit the vehicle.

He got the door shut, faced them, and grinned. Dressed in New England casual of laced-up work boots, jeans, and plaid shirt under a denim jacket, Nate Pierce, striding across the snow, hand out in welcome, was a commercial for settling down. Tall. Good-looking in a rugged, works-for-a-living kind of way. And he had a dog. A big, sloppy, super-cute dog, wagging its tail and drooling on the driver’s side window.

For one impulsive moment Jen wished this was her life. She loved big dogs, the country, and secretly, men in plaid shirts, but she hadn’t had the opportunity for any of it since her dad’s death. Their daddy-daughter fishing trips, where he’d gotten to get out of his suit and she’d gotten to be free of her school uniform, had stopped cold the year she’d turned twelve.

This was the first time since then she’d ventured outside of somewhere hot and warm with a very clean, very controlled hotel. Her mom’s idea of a vacation. Of course, neither her mom nor her ex, Jason, tolerated dogs of any size. And as for living outside of the Boston city limits?

Neither of them would consider the horror.

She squashed the sudden surge of loneliness and desire for something she’d probably never have, and pasted on a smile.

Mr. Good-Looking Country Boy tramped through the snow to the porch, pushed his overlong forelock of sandy brown hair off his face, and held out a hand. “Hi, I’m Nate Pierce, your landlord.”

“My what?” She shot a quick look at Mrs. Castlebury.

“Your landlord, dear. I’m just the listing agent. Nate owns the house and he’ll see to any upkeep you need.”

“In fact, I’ll be back in an hour or so after you’ve gotten settled and bring the Christmas tree.”

“The Christmas tree?” She’d forgotten. She’d purchased the Christmas in New England package because it had been cheaper than renting by the day. “That’s not necessary,” she said, her voice chillier than she’d intended.

“I’ve already cut the tree down.” Nate’s friendly grin wavered as did his hand hovering in the air between them. “It would be a shame to waste.”

She didn’t want to be friendly with the neighbors. She wanted to hide out and recuperate. Make up her mind as to what in the world she was going to do next. But good manners won out.

Jen repressed a sigh, reached out, and slid her bare hand into his. As it disappeared into his tan callused grip, her hand seemed slim and small. He squeezed gently and a tingling warmth spread across her skin.

Hot caramel sensation slid from the connection between them, up her palm, along her arm, and through her entire body. Her hand tightened automatically, and a responding spark lit in his eyes.

Jen swallowed. Shoot! She wasn’t ready for this. She was here to lick her wounds, not some guy’s abs. And given the strength in his hand and his wide shoulders, she’d bet he had some killer abs.

She gazed up into Nate’s warm chocolate brown eyes and his face blurred. For a moment she saw another face superimposed over his. Same brown eyes, same tanned, rugged New England skin, but more boyish, broad-boned and black haired.

Every hair on her scalp tried to climb out of its slicked back, ponytailed restriction.

Then her new neighbor’s sharper, more intense features came into focus. Jen panicked and jerked her hand away. Wiping her buzzing palm on her long red wool coat she backed up, nearly running into Mrs. Castlebury.

“Oh, I’m sorry. Pardon me.” She circled around, putting the older woman between herself and Nate Pierce.

What the hell just happened?

Jen tucked her hands into the safety of her coat pockets, surreptitiously rubbing her tingling right palm along the silk inside her pocket. Trying to get rid of the strange feeling spreading along her skin and telling her pounding heart that everything was fine. That something bizarre hadn’t just happened to her. And that life was safe and normal.

Ghosts of Christmas Past

Jen MacNamara flees the Christmas wedding of her best friend and cheating fiancé and runs to the country to spend the holiday alone. It’s the perfect plan, until her unexpectedly sexy neighbor and landlord, Nate Pierce, insists on bringing the holiday to her—complete with a Christmas tree, hot chocolate, and an unexpected kiss.

And that’s not Jen’s only problem. ghosts of christmas past by jessica aspen

The cozy country farmhouse is already occupied by something evil. Now Jen’s nights are spent wrapped in sensual dreams of a past life, and her days growing closer to Nate as they solve the mystery of the malevolent ghost that haunts not only the house, but also wants Jen dead.

She used her body, her anger, and her fear. Anger at the Faery Queen for the constant harassment and extermination of her family and her tribe. Fear of what came next, what might be riding on the coattails of the sunset.

Pulsing with power, she paced deeper and deeper into the labyrinth, static lifting her long black hair into a crackling wild nimbus. She pulled and twisted the vibrant orange and red of her anxiety into the alchemy of the earth’s brown and green energy, weaving them together into an invisible net.

Each measured step layered power into the fabric of her spell. Each movement of the athame directed the energy where it needed to go. Just as darkness dipped its toes into the valley, she turned the last curve into the double spiral’s center.

Her rage and fear coalesced into the final strands of the spell leaving her shaking and exhausted as the last of the afterglow faded from the sky, a stunning show of deep purple on grey. A sonorous quiet descended. No birds, no coyotes. Just the wind sending small trails of skittering leaves through the labyrinth. Prickles of anticipation trembled on her bare spine.

It would be here soon. It was coming fast. And it was coming for her.

Trina raced out the door, forgetting again about the broken bottom porch step. The rotting wood gave under her foot. She hit hard on her hands and knees. The heavy duffle bag swung down and slammed into her arm, tipping open, the sacred ritual tools scattering into the dirt.

Her throat swelled tight. She swallowed back forbidden tears, sat up, and brushed off the tiny rocks embedded in her flesh.

“Damn it!”

She didn’t have time for this.

Scrambling around in the dirt and weeds, she grabbed the precious tools, tossing them like discarded toys into the duffle. Why hadn’t the Goddess Gifted her with time manipulation? Then she wouldn’t have to worry about all this crap.

Ignoring the gorgeous dusty golds and ambers of fall in rural Wyoming, she hauled the loaded duffle up the rapidly darkening hill. Something was coming to the peaceful valley. Cassie had dreamed it, and even if her dreams were subject to interpretation the meaning had been clear. Tonight at sunset, the queen’s dog would descend.

Happy Third of July!

Thursdays Bite

a non-paranormal holiday blog

Hello and happy 3rd of July! Tomorrow is the fourth and I’ll be celebrating with a BBQ and fireworks, of course! For those of you wondering what is happening to poor Cassie in the Tales of the Black Court, I’ll also be working hard on my fantasy romance, Broken Mirror, my Camp NaNoWriMo project for the month of July.

Caught in the Black Queen’s spell, ignorant of who she is and why she should hate the queen,  the only man who might tell Cassie the truth is the court trickster…and everyone knows he’s not a man to be trusted.

Writing fantasy romance can be slow, you have to build the world, create the characters, oh, and write a steamy, love story. But so far this one is rocketing along and I think it’s on target for early 2015 release. Yippee!

Today I’m sharing the Freedom to Read Blog Hop I discovered through my Triber feed. I haven’t done a blog hop in a while, and I’m not a participating author in this one, but I thought my readers might want the chance to meet some new authors and enter to win in the giveaway!

freedom to read giveaway hop july 2nd to 9thClick HERE to check out Stacy Claflin’s website and her fab boxed set Giveaway as well as find the list of participating authors. Then hop to all their websites and enter to win their fab prizes. What a terrific way to spend a holiday!

UPDATES:

I still have room in the Camp NaNo Cabin that ML Guida and I are running. It’s not to late to join. In Camp Nano you set your own goal, so join us and get to writing that memoir, that novella, that best-seller! click HERE for the article on what we’re doing and the contact form to join.

And I had a stellar few days retreating with ML up at her real cabin in the mountains. I’m at 4773 words and counting! At this rate I will have a terrific rough draft of Broken Mirror by the end of the month.

My New Adult Gothic, Ghosts of Christmas Past is finished and is at the proofreader. Can’t wait to see get that back and get to formatting.

Newsletter readers: Stay tuned, my news letter will be out soon with details of how you can read Ghosts of Christmas Past, and my big plans for The Dark Huntsman’s Book Birthday in October.

Trapped in an underground palace Prince Kian must remain a beast, or give in to the queen’s plan to strip him of his powers. But Kian refuses to submit to his mother’s evil plan and is determined to escape both his prison and his curse—even if it means dabbling in witch’s magic.

On the run for most of her life, Bryanna MacElvy has never learned to use her healing Gift. When she’s pulled by Kian’s spell into his prison, the prince sees the golden witch as his salvation. Refusing to let her, or to accept she is incapable of curing him, Kian offers her a terrible bargain—heal him, or give up her freedom forever.

Their lives entwined by fate, the prince must learn to love a human and Bryanna must learn to trust herself—or risk losing their freedom, his powers, and their passion, to the evil of the Black Queen.

Golden Quill Finalist For a Second Year in a Row!

Thursdays Bite

a paranormal romance celebration blog

the dark huntsman 2014 golden quill finalistWoot! The Dark Huntsman is a Finalist in the Fantasy/Sci-Fi category of the Desert Rose RWA Golden Quill 2014 contest. (Say it ten times fast!). If you still haven’t read my fantasy romance, The Dark Huntsman, check out the Prince by Blood and Bone Blog tour for opportunities to win an e-copy. Several of the sites are hosting giveaways, and there are lots of chances to win.

I’m having a terrific 2014. My hot paranormal romance, Goldi and the Bear, is a finalist in the Colorado Romance Writers Award of Excellence and the second book in the Tales of the Black Court, Prince by Blood and Bone, is having an amazing blog tour with several five star (or fangs, or paws) reviews. It seems that readers like it even more than The Dark Huntsman, and that’s really good news for me since I was super stressed about it being just as good a book. I guess it was worth taking that extra time to make it right. 🙂

You can still enter to win one of five print copies of Prince by Blood and Bone on Goodreads, so add it to you Goodreads Shelf and enter to win!

I’m not doing an additional blog today, because I’m busy putting the final touches on my New Adult Gothic romance, Ghosts of Christmas Past, before I send it off to the first editor. If you would like to read an actual blog then hop on over to the Indy Book Fairy to read an interview with me HERE.

Happy May to all!
