Musings on being an author

So, I’m officially a romance author. I have written and published 9 full length fantasy and paranormal romance novels, 9 novellas and one short story. I also have an additional free short and free novella that you can only find in my newsletter, so really, that’s 20 books out the door since I very first published in 2012.

Wow!

And in that time I’ve learned a tremendous amount.  One of the things I’ve learned is that I like to write in large chunks of time. In other words, I do best when I have more than one hour to sit and write. In fact, my preferred amount of time is at least three hours broken up into forty-five minutes of writing and fifteen minutes of movement. Usually housecleaning. LOL 🙂

This year I learned something else: my readers enjoy reading the books that I enjoy writing. You see, I wrote a short romance novella this year and for me it was a good experience, but a quickie. I had a lot of constraints I don’t normally have. I had to write in someone else’s universe. I had a book length requirement. And, I had a super short time constraint.

I burned through this novella in record time and frankly, it shows. For the very first time I’m getting four-star reviews that say: Loved it. Cute story, but predictable.

PREDICTABLE!

Ouch!

I always want my readers to be honest, and it’s tough to complain about four star reviews, but these hurt. They hurt more than the one-star reviews because these reviews are from my go-to readers, readers who love my paranormal and fantasy romances, readers who can’t wait for the next one and the next one and the next one.

So, I’m changing it up. I‘m going back to the drawing board.

While I enjoyed writing this book, it really wasn’t my thing. What is my thing? Longer fantasy romances with convoluted exciting plots and deep dark characters. I love writing them and my readers love reading them. 🙂

And I’m taking my time.

I’ve become a super fast writer, but that also means I need to go back and take my time over my edits. I’m going to give myself that time. Even if it means I don’t have a new romance come out until June. Yeah, you read it right. June.

So, what is the new series?

I’m going back to my roots: fantasy romance with a fairy tale twist.

My most popular books, the ones everyone loves to read and I love to write are the Tales of the Black Court so I’m diving back into Underhill and all the dark twisty fairy tales and dark twisty characters. And guess what? It’s going great! I’m loving these stories. I have the prequel rough draft already finished and I’m bursting with ideas for the next five books. I’m writing faster than ever and, better than that, I’m enjoying it.

And do you know what that means?

If I’m loving these stories, you will too!

So get ready for more twisted fairy tales with dark heroes and strong heroines. Get ready for bloodthirsty evil queens and magic and brand new fairy godmothers with a twist. And of course, romance. Did I mention romance? Fabulous fantasy romance with fast paced fairy tale happily ever afters because, after all, that’s what you and I both love…to read, and to write.
