a blog for the fairy tale romance lover
ML (Mary) is one of my fellow writers in the CHAIN OF LOVE: Curvy Women and the Men Who Chain Their Hearts writing experiment, and even though she didn’t get a chance to read or critique CINDER: A Sexy Shifter Fairytale Romance, she’s been looking at my cover and reading my blurbs and listening to me talk about fairy god mothers and glass slippers for the last three months. So how come she didn’t know it was a Cinderella story?
So, it got me to wondering: what I was missing. The book cover doesn’t scream Cinderella. It does say sexy romance, and it does say wolf shifter romance, but there are no glass slippers, no pumpkins, and no chubby fairy godmother’s with sparkly wands.
Okay, so what about the blurb? Does that say Cinderella?
When curvy Cinderella meets a charming reluctant alpha, can he save her from a step mother who means murder?
Cinder Vandeburg dreams getting away from her overbearing step mother and getting a real job—one that pays. When her stepsisters are finalists in a teen modeling competition at a chic resort in the beautiful mountains of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, her step mother offers her an opportunity: prove herself a competent personal assistant and earn not only a stellar referral, but a bona-fide introduction to the movers and shakers of the modeling world. This is Cinder’s chance at freedom but as usual, her stepmother seems to find fault in everything she does—even when she sends her to seduce suspected modeling judge, Aiden Burdock.
Aiden is no modeling judge. He’s a tour guide with a pack of bachelor wolves depending on him to rustle up quality clients and keep their business afloat. But Aiden never wanted to be an alpha. He dreams of freedom and running wild in the hills. Having six…no seven…now eight wolves depending on him for leadership and jobs is more than he counted on when he fled pack expectations in Colorado. But his alpha tendencies can’t be ignored and when he sees curvy Cinder being treated as the runt of the litter, he lies and says he’s a judge to get her away from her malicious boss.
Now Aiden is faced with how to tell Cinder he’s just a working stiff, like her, and a wolf shifter to boot. As Aiden and Cinder’s fairy godmother build up her self esteem and she starts falling in love with a man of secrets.
Lions and wolves and bears, oh my.
Discover why readers love the twisted tales of Jessica Aspen’s Sexy Shifter Fairytale Romance.
Yes, I think so. Not only does it say she’s a curvy Cinderella, it says there’s an evil stepmother, stepsisters, and a fairy godmother, and while Aiden isn’t exactly portrayed as Prince Charming, I do say “charming reluctant alpha” in the tagline.
So how did she miss it?
Well, I don’t think she did.
I think that she was actually thinking about the TALES OF THE BLACK COURT, because I haven’t done a Cinderella story there. I’ve done Snow White in both series, and I’ve done Beauty and the Beast and The Frog Prince in TALES OF THE BLACK COURT, but I haven’t done Cinderella.
Why not? And why did I wait until book six of the SEXY SHIFTER FAIRYTALE ROMANCES to do Cinderella. Why not do it first?
Because it’s so hard! Or I thought it would be. I tried for a year before I wrote Cinder to figure out Aiden’s story. I’d already written him in Snow, he’s the alpha of Seth’s new bachelor pack, and I knew he needed his own story, but I seriously was going to do a Beauty and the Beast story because Cinderella was just not flowing.
But then I had the opportunity to write the curvy romance, and suddenly, Cinder’s tale was in my head, and writing it was one of the easiest twisted fairy tales I’ve ever written. Leticia Du Monde, her sassy, sexy, plus-size fairy godmother of the modeling world, nearly wrote herself, and Cinder’s stepmother and stepsisters sprang to life without any trouble at all. I just knew how the story would go.
And when that happens, it’s magic.
It’s like the first book in the TALES OF THE BLACK COURT. Writing THE DARK HUNTSMAN wasn’t easy, but that’s because it was my first complete long novel and I needed to learn a lot about writing, but the story? Easy. Same thing with RED. I wrote the first draft in three weeks. Love it!
So, when a Cinderella romance that works in the fantasy romance world of TALES OF THE BLACK COURT comes to mind, I’ll write it. Meanwhile, I’ve had the Snow Queen story percolating for nearly four years in the back of my mind, long before Frozen or the new Snow Queen movie appeared, so that’s what’s coming next. And of course, for those of you who read BROKEN MIRROR, I’ve set up Sleeping Beauty.
In the meantime, Mary, you’ll have to stick with sexy wolf shifters and Cinderella romance. I loved writing it and I think it’s my favorite to date. I hope it’s yours too. At least until the next book comes out!
Do you want a Cinderella tale for the TALES OF THE BLACK COURT? What about some of the other fairy tales I’ve not written at all, like Rapunzel? Now that’s a fairytale with some deep ideas in it. Would you like Repunzel? What other fairytales do you love?
