October Blast

Fantastic Fridays

a blog about the state of things in October

It’s October and time to celebrate the New Year and my foray into a new type of paranormal romance with elves, witches and romance!

Yes, that’s right. Samhain (pronounced sa-win or so-win) is the celebration of the fall harvest and many witches call it the New Year. We celebrate Halloween as a modern version, as well as the Day of the Dead, and All Saints Day. Party it up the night before. Drink the wine you put up last year and the fresh beer you made this one. Celebrate the dark of the year and the successful harvest.

I love the fall. The crisp blast of cold air. The clear blue sky. Even the chilly rain that drives me indoors. It’s all a fantastic way to feel the coming of the next season. I chose to publish The Dark Huntsman in October last year and I love the fact that it’s now my book birthday. I have more reason to celebrate.

Of course, now is the time to get those Halloween decorations out. I’ll be doing that this weekend. If it doesn’t rain too much. Love the rain. Here in Colorado we have drought so much of the year that the fall rains are a welcome change to the heat of August and September.

What’s coming up for me? Writing, writing, writing. Still working on Broken Mirror, book three in the Tales of the Black Court and I’m thrilled to say it’s finally gelling. I’m getting a handle on my hero, Bosco. He’s a bad, bad, boy. Of course he has his reasons, but still… I guess I like those alpha guys who need fixing. What can I say? Flaws attract me. Twisted, baby, twisted.

And since I’ve already written most of a novella with Cassie already, she is much easier. Although, she starts off this book with a twist of her own. It seems the Black Queen and Haddon have left their mark on her. I’m not going to say much more, even though you’ll find out right away in the begining of the book what happened to her after the end of Prince by Blood and Bone

Next up, I have to work on the cover. As soon as I have it, I’ll post it, but if it’s anything like working on the last one it will take me awhile.

Have a great fall!

  1. Does that mean you do your own covers, Jessica? They’re fantastic!

    • Oh no! I definitely don’t do my own covers. I have cover artists. Kari Ayasha with Cover to Cover Designs did the first two Tales of the Black Court, and I agree, she does a fantastic job! But since fantasy covers are actually quite difficult I put in a lot of time searching for images for Prince by Blood and Bone. Trying to get something with a similar feel to the first cover she came up with was really tough! Now we need to do that again for book three and I don’t think it’s going to get any easier.
